Lung cancer is a very common cancer, but it only becomes noticeable relatively late in the form of symptoms and complaints. To date, the possibilities of early detection are limited - the examinations tested so far are stressful and not without risk. In particular, people who are at high risk of developing lung cancer should be aware of important warning signs. Due to late detection, often in therapeutically overdosed stages, only 14% of the diagnosed patients are able to survive for a longer period of time (5 years). Once lung cancer begins to cause symptoms, it is usually visible on an X-ray and next, CT scan of the chest may be ordered for a more detailed exam. In this paper we aimed by image processing to develop a system for lung cancer recognition and detect the stage of the disease. In this study, some ultrasonography images with different types of lung cancer and with no lung cancer were tested. Active contour algorithms were designed and applied to the CT images in order to segment the image without clearly defined boundaries. Next, the resulted images have been interpreted. the proposed method for diagnosing lung cancer is useful, because it helps doctors to diagnose if it is the case of lung cancer or other disease.

Aiming at the problems of long operation time and poor flexibility of embedded processor, this paper proposes a structure of configurable execution unit based on RISC-V extended instruction set for computing granularity. the structure sets up basic parallel computing units and configuration registers, which can realize a large number of parallel operations such as multiplication, addition, or higher abstractions similar to convolutional neural networks by software configuration. this paper completed the design of this structure and integrated it into a four-stage pipelined RISC-V processor. the white blood cell images collected by lensless system are used to test various image algorithms. the experimental results show that the processor speed designed in this paper is 5.95 times to 22.21 times higher than that of the ordinary pipeline processor, and the number of instructions required is reduced by 1.16 times to 7.49 times. therefore, the processor has a certain improvement in processing speed and flexibility, which is of great significance for the implementation of various algorithms in embedded systems. © 2022 IEEE.

Uncoupled radar networks offer many desired features such as large virtual apertures and flexibility in sensor placement without costly radio frequency (RF) cables. However, they also introduce novel challenges, especially the recovery of coherency between individual radar sensors. the correction of timing errors due to sampling frequency offsets (SFO) between a transmitter's digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and receiver's analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is essential for the coherent processing of uncoupled digital radar network measurements. systems with different error estimation and correction approaches have been proposed recently, which utilize resampling-based algorithms. However, they are costly to implement, i.e. on an FPGA, and require additional signal processing steps. the herein presented Radon-Fourier Transform (RFT)-based algorithm is capable of directly calculating the corrected radar image without any resampling, negating the downside of additional signal processing steps required after resampling. It is shown that the RFT approach can almost completely restore erroneous radar data, and even outperforms the resampling-based algorithm. In this work, an experimental orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) demonstrator is utilized to verify the concepts, which are applicable to other modulation types typically used for digital radar. © 2025 Institut fur Mikrowellen und Antennentechnik - IMA.

this paper presents SuPeR-B, a novel, Retinex inspired color spatial algorithm to enhance images acquired under difficult light conditions, such as pictures containing dark and bright regions caused by backlight and/or local, not diffused spotlight. SuPeR-B takes as input a color image and improves its readability by processing its color channels independently in accordance with some principles of the Retinex theory. Precisely, SuPeR-B re-works the channel intensity of each pixels accounting for differences computed both in the spatial and intensity domains. In this way, SuPeR-B acts as a bilater filter. the experiments, carried out on a real-world dataset, shows that SuPeR-B ensures good enhancement results, also in comparison with other state-of-the-art algorithms: SuPeR-B improves the overall content of the image, making the dark regions brighter and more contrasted, while lowering possible chromatic dominants of the light.

the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is commonly used for feature extraction in machine learning applications. Since these applications are frequently deployed in portable systems with limited computational resources, FPGA-based hybrid hardware/software solutions might be a viable choice. this article provides an analysis of various 4-level db4 DWT and feature extraction techniques implemented on the Zynq 7020 device. Alternative DWT versions include fixed-point and floating-point implementations, cascade and single-core reuse architectures, as well as designs in HDL and VHDL. the feature extraction process considers mean, energy, and entropy. It has also been implemented in an architecture that efficiently reuses these computational cores. these versions are compared in terms of accuracy, resources used, performance, and power consumption. © 2025 IEEE.

In this paper, a new full-reference image quality assessment (IQA) method for performing perceptual quality evaluation on the light field (LF) image is proposed, called the contourlet transform-based model (CTM). the LF image consists of a set of sub-aperture images (SAIs) that have similar image content but with small angular deviations due to different viewing angles. Hence, the abundant image details can be extracted from the SAIs. To fulfil this goal, the contourlet transform is used to extract the multi-scale spatial features of the reference and distorted SAIs, respectively. Based on our proposed IQA metric, the degree of similarity can be computed based on the above-measured quantities for arriving at the final IQA score of the distorted LF image under evaluation. Experimental simulation results obtained from the dense light fields datasets clearly show that the proposed CTM algorithm is more in line with the quality assessment of the LF images perceived by the human visual system (HVS) when compared with that of using other state-of-the-art IQA algorithms.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) systems collect electromagnetic radiation, emitted or reflected by the scene under observation at, typically, hundreds of contiguous and regularly spaced narrow spectral bands, from the visible to the infra-red region of the spectrum. the result is a 3D data cube with two spatial dimensions and a wavelength dimension, composed of hundreds of co-registered images containing information on the spectral signature of the materials present in the field of view of the sensor at the time of capture. Retrieving this information in an efficient way, requires compute systems capable of dealing with a huge amount of data and complex algorithms. the recent development of single board computers (SBC) with enough compute power to deal with HSI processing using machine learning (ML) algorithms opens new opportunities for embedded HSI systems for Earth Observation remote sensing, laboratory setups and industrial applications. In this work, we evaluate the performance of the ODROID-XU4, a heterogeneous computing device, running ML algorithms for HSI classification. the experimental results show the potential of SBC as alternative hardware platforms for applications requiring low power and low cost devices, such as onboard processing units and edge computing.

Bit-depth expansion(BDE) algorithms have made great progress on single image. However, it is hard to directly apply on videos with no temporal constraint. Aiming at the problem of video BDE, we adopt an encoder-decoder structure with 3D convolution to fuse spatial and temporal domain information. the encoder utilizes 3-stage down sampling with 3D ResBlocks to align the features of different time series, the decoder adopt the inverse structure with Coordinate Attention to fuse the aligned features and reconstruct the high bit-depth frame. the quantitative and qualitative experimental results show that the proposed video BDE network is superior to other methods. Compared with the best BDE algorithm, we obtain a 1.51db improvement on PSNR. With no additional temporal information such as optical flow, our method is also superior in running speed.

In memory-bound problems, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have traditionally underperformed compared to Graphics processing Units (GPUs) due to their lower memory bandwidth. However, high bandwidth memory (HBM) in FPGAs has significantly enhanced their performance, achieving bandwidths up to 425 GB/s. Additionally, FPGAs offer the advantage of customizable accelerators for domain-specific tasks, potentially outperforming general-purpose GPU architectures. this work focuses on accelerating random forest algorithms on FPGAs, leveraging their customization capabilities to manage control flow structures such as decision branches efficiently. Despite these advancements, FPGAs remain challenging to program, requiring a deep understanding of hardware design. We propose a new hardware generator that integrates necessary tools into a cohesive workflow to address this, simplifying FPGA development. We validated the design on a Xilinx Alveo FPGA, using 32 HBM channels and reaching a performance of 8 billion samples per second. this work offers a practical solution for memory-bound machine learning tasks in high-performance computing environments.
