Textbook figures are often converted into a tactile format for access by blind students. these figures are not truly accessible unless the text within the figures is also made accessible. A common solution to access text in a tactile image is to use embossed Braille. We have developed an alternative to Braille that uses QR codes for students who want tactile graphics, but prefer the text in figures be spoken, rather than in Braille. Tactile graphics with a Voice (TGV) allows text within tactile graphics to be accessible by using a talking QR code reader app on a smartphone. To evaluate TGV, we performed a longitudinal study where ten blind and low vision participants were asked to complete tasks using three alternative picture taking guidance techniques: 1) no guidance, 2) verbal guidance, and 3) finger pointing guidance. Our results show that TGV is an effective way to access text in tactile graphics, especially for those blind users who are not fluent in Braille. In addition, guidance preferences varied with each of the guidance techniques being preferred by at least one participant. Copyright 2014 ACM.

In this paper, we explore the key factors in the design and implementation of visual computing (image processing and computer vision) algorithms on the massive parallel GPU (graphics processing units). the goal of the exploration is to provide common perspective and guidelines of using GPU for visual computing applications. We have selected three nontrivial applications (multiview stereo matching, linear feature extraction, and JPEG2000 image encoding) for the benchmarks, which show different characteristics in GPU parallel computing. Intensive analysis is performed to evaluate the characteristic of each algorithm and its effect on the performance. Based on this, we draw general guidelines of using GPU for the visual computing algorithms.

Ambient reflection is widely present in many applications of computer graphics and image processing, which is traditionally modelled as a constant free from environmental factors. this paper reconsiders ambient reflection modelling of Lambertian and Phong surfaces and calculates it as reflection integrations of infinitesimal incident beams from the environment. It reveals that ambient reflection exists in variable forms for Lambertian surfaces of non-convex objects and Phong surfaces of all objects. For convex objects with Lambertian surfaces, ambient reflectance coefficient is actually the diffuse reflectance coefficient. Generalised ambient reflection models are proposed to calculate ambient reflection using the same reflection model as used in calculation of other reflections. Based on this analysis, new ambient reflection formulations of Lambertian and Phong surfaces are derived to enable efficient computations in computer graphics and image processing.

Ten years ago the concept of bilateral filtering (BF) became popular in the image processing community. the core of the idea is to blend the effect of a spatial filter, as e.g. the Gaussian filter, with the effect of a filter that acts on image values. the two filters acts on orthogonal domains of a picture: the 2D lattice of the image support and the intensity (or color) domain. the BF approach is an intuitive way to blend these two filters giving rise to algorithms that perform difficult tasks requiring a relatively simple design. In this paper we extend the concept of BF, proposing the bilateral enhancers (BE). We show how to design proper functions to obtain an edge-preserving smoothing and a selective sharpening. Moreover, we show that the proposed algorithm can perform edge-preserving smoothing and selective sharpening simultaneously in a single filtering.

In this paper, we propose a local cost aggregation approach for real time stereo vision on a graphics processing unit (GPU). Recent research shows that local approaches based on carefully designed cost aggregation strategies can outperform many global approaches. Among those local aggregation approaches, adaptive-weight window produces the best quality disparity map under real-time constraint, but it is slower than other local approaches. We propose a very fast adaptive-weight aggregation method based on exponential step information propagation. the basic idea is to propagate information from long distance pixels within a few iterations. We also discuss important techniques of efficient implementation on GPU platform, which result in 10.5× speed up than a straightforward implementation. Compared to existing real time adaptive-weight approach, our technique reduces the computation time by more than half at improved accuracy. Detailed experimental results show that our technique is Pareto-optimal among existing real time or near real time stereo algorithms in the accuracy-speed trade-off space.

Estimation of discrete curvature is a challenging problem, since a mere replacement of functional derivatives by numerical differences fails to produce the desired result. Several algorithms have been proposed so far, which are mostly based on the concepts of real geometry and hence are computationally expensive. the existing measure of k-curvature, though easy to compute, is crippled with some unwanted syndromes arising out of improper consideration of chain codes. Hence, an improved algorithm for estimating k-curvature is proposed, which is marked by its inherent simplicity and computational attractiveness, and produces the expected estimate, whether the concerned point has an extreme (high or low) curvature or the concerned segment has a constant or changing curvature. Examples and experimental results demonstrate the fitness and effectiveness of the proposed technique for digital curves of arbitrary shapes.

Symbol spotting problem requires feature extraction strategies able to generalize from training samples and to localize the target object while discarding most part of the image. In the case of document analysis, symbol spotting techniques have to deal with a high variability of symbols' appearance. In this paper, we propose the Circular Blurred Shape Model descriptor. Feature extraction is performed capturing the spatial arrangement of significant object characteristics in a correlogram structure. Shape information from objects is shared among correlogram regions, being tolerant to the irregular deformations. Descriptors are learnt using a cascade of classifiers and Abadoost as the base classifier. Finally, symbol spotting is performed by means of a windowing strategy using the learnt cascade over plan and old musical score documents. Spotting and multi-class categorization results show better performance comparing with the state-of-the-art descriptors.

this paper presents a method for generating high dynamic range and disparity images by simultaneously capturing the high and low exposure images using a pair of cameras. the proposed stereoscopic high dynamic range imaging technique is able to record multiple exposures without any time delay, and thus suitable for high dynamic range video synthesis. We have demonstrated that it is possible to construct the camera response function using a pair of images with different amount of exposure. the intensities of the stereo images can then be normalized for correspondence matching. Experiments using the Middlebury stereo datasets are presented.
