Methods for mobile robot localization that use eigen spaces of panoramic snapshots of the environment are in general sensitive to changes in the illumination of the environment. therefore, we propose an approach which achieves a reliable localization under severe illumination conditions. the method uses gradient filtering of the eigen space. After testing the approach on images obtained by a mobile robot, we show that it outperforms the standard eigen space-based recognition method. © 2002 IEEE.

the intimate relationship between human walking and running lies within the skeleto-muscular structure. this is expressed as a mapping that can transform computer vision derived gait signatures from running to walking and vice versa, for purposes of deployment in gait as a biometric or for animation in computer graphics. the computer vision technique can extract leg motion by temporal template matching with a model defined by forced coupled oscillators as the basis. the (biometric) signature is derived from Fourier analysis of the variation in the motion of the thigh and lower leg. In fact, the mapping between these gait modes clusters better than the original signatures (of which running is the more potent) and can be used for recognition purposes alone, or to buttress both of the signatures. Moreover, the two signatures can be made invariant to gait mode by using the new mapping. © 2002 IEEE.

We are currently witnessing an important paradigm shift in information system construction, namely the move from object and component technology to model technology. the object technology revolution has allowed the replacement of the over twenty-year-old step-wise procedural decomposition paradigm with the more fashionable object composition paradigm. Surprisingly, this evolution seems to have triggered another even more radical change, the current trend toward model transformation. A concrete example is the Object Management Group's rapid move from its previous Object Management Architecture vision to the latest Model-Driven Architecture. this paper proposes an interpretation of this evolution through abstract investigation. In order to stay as language-independent as possible, we have employed the neutral formalism of Sowa's conceptual graphs to describe the various situations characterizing this organization. this will allow us to identify potential problems in the proposed modeling framework and suggest some possible solutions.

AVR (from actual reality to virtual reality) is a development of VR technique. In AVR, the objects in real world are virtualized directly from their shape information based on computer graphics and computer vision techniques, which provides the virtual environment with a higher level realism and preciseness. the basic theory and core techniques of AVR have been expounded in this paper. In order to achieve the integration of computer vision and computer graphics, superquadric-based model (SQ-based model) as the universal description of virtual objects is chosen and PAMvision model providing a general framework for vision recognition and reconstruction in AVR modeling is developed. As the core techniques of AVR, two approaches for virtualizing the real objects from either 2D images or 3D data are implemented.

ICAT is the oldest international conference on virtual reality and tele-existence. ICAT 2006 not only looked for innovations in the technology itself, but also explored novel ways to transfer and express information and creative ideas to the society and people. the 16th international conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence was held at the Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou, P. R. China from November 29 to December 1, 2006. the main purpose of the conference is to provide opportunities for researchers and practitioners to present their research findings and exchange opinions on the development and use of such systems. the conference included plenary invited talks, workshops, tutorials, and paper presentation tracks. the main conference received 523 submissions in total from 21 different countries, including China (mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan), USA, UK, Germany, Austria, France, Australia, Canada, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, etc. , of which 138 papers were accepted for this volume and 11 papers were invited to submit extended versions for a special issue of international Journal of Virtual Reality (IJVR, 5(4)).
