In the landscape of Internet of things (IoT) systems, data quality degradation can occur continuously for several reasons, such as sensor malfunctions, intermittent network availability, device maintenance, or incomplete data collection. this paper proposes three efficient data quality validation and imputation algorithms that identify and replace noisy and missing values with better-quality data. We extensively stress-tested and evaluated our algorithms by deploying them on microcontrollers and small CPU-based IoT boards with memory limited to as little as 32KB. We simulated a sensor data stream using five real-world datasets, including data collected from the Newcastle Urban Observatory. In this setup, each algorithm excelled in different areas, consistently demonstrating high performance across 100 samples in terms of high energy efficiency (0.014 J), low computation time (85.94 ms), and low error rates (0.0019 MAE, 0.0027 RMSE). Remarkably, we found that on average, our algorithms running on hardware, costing less than $10, showed performance on par with state-of-the-art methods on high-end devices. the results also demonstrated that our algorithms enabled on-device cleansing of live streaming sensor data, eliminating the dependency on cloud services and allowing for real-time data quality validation and processing at the edge.

this study investigates a novel methodology for enhancing passenger comfort in highly automated vehicles (HAVs) by deriving driving patterns from professional chauffeurs. We collected detailed driving and interview data from chauffeurs, who are known for their smooth and comfortable driving styles. A Two-Step deceleration profile was derived from this data. Two different versions of the Two-Step Profile (V1 and V2), along with a One-Step profile, were integrated into an HAV and tested in various driving scenarios with 36 participants. Participants experienced each profile twice: once while attentive and once while engaged in a non-driving activity. By transferring the chauffeur's driving style to an HAV, this study evaluates the feasibility and comfort of human-like driving patterns in automated systems. the findings provide valuable insights for designing HAVs that prioritize passenger comfort, bridging the gap between human driving expertise and automated technology.

By addressing the trends of digitalization, decentralization, democratization, and decarbonization, local Peer-to-Peer (P2P) markets have the potential to significantly accelerate decarbonization at the communal level. In addition to prosumers and consumers, other stakeholders are involved in P2P trading as well. To consider the individual stakeholder interests, we extended and refined an existing methodology for establishing and analyzing the requirements for a local energy market. thus, the paper describes the extension and application of the first part of the Development approach for Decentralized Control systems (2DECS). According to 2DECS, we followed the four artifacts of requirements elicitation: the derivation of relevant User Stories, the “Definitions of Done”, creation of Story Cards, and the establishment of Acceptance Test Requirements. In addition, we rated the individual interests of the market participants based on their potential for conflict.

Multilevel fusion systems need provisions to optimally schedule scarce processing and communication resources. To this end, we explore the idea of using utility-based metrics to optimize the run-time operation of a computation and communication constrained multilevel system, including automatic decision support measures such as course of action planning. In a simplified case study, we extend a processing chain with local utility-based run-time feedback mechanisms. this allows the processes in the distributed chain to improve their behavior towards a common measure of effectiveness using local interactions only. Simulation results show an increased performance of utility-based optimization over constant rate or random techniques.

this paper proposes Gaussian filters for polynomial systems with efficient solutions for both the prediction and the filter step. For the prediction step, computationally efficient closed-form solutions are derived for calculating the exact moments. In order to achieve a higher estimation quality, the filter step is solved without the usual additional assumption that state and measurement are jointly Gaussian distributed. As this significantly complicates the required moment calculation, a homotopy continuation method is employed that yields almost optimal results.

Federated Learning (FL) is a promising solution for collaborative machine learning while respecting data privacy and locality. FL has been used in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations for different space applications including earth observation, navigation, and positioning. Orbital Edge computing (OEC) refers to the deployment of edge computing resources and data processing capabilities in space-based systems, enabling real-time data analysis and decision-making for remote and space-based applications. While there is existing research exploring the integration of federated learning in OEC, the influence of diverse factors such as space conditions, communication constraints, and machine learning models remains uncertain. this paper addresses this gap and presents a comprehensive performance analysis of FL methods in the unique and challenging setting of OEC. We consider model accuracy, training time, and power consumption as the performance metrics under different working conditions including IID and non-IID data distributions to analyse the performance of centralised and decentralised FL approaches. the experimental results demonstrate that although the asynchronous centralised FL method has high fluctuations in the accuracy curve, it is suitable for space applications in which power consumption and training time are two main factors. In addition, the number of sampled satellites for decentralised FL methods is an important parameter in non-IID data distribution. Moreover, increasing altitude can reduce the training time and increase the power consumption. this study enables us to highlight a number of performance challenges in OEC for further investigation.

Publicly available data is increasing rapidly, and will continue to grow with the advancement of technologies in sensors, smartphones and the Internet of things. Data from multiple sources can improve coverage and provide more relevant knowledge about surrounding events and points of Interest. the strength of one source of data can compensate for the shortcomings of another source by providing supplementary information. Maps are also getting popular day-by-day and people are using it to achieve their daily task smoothly and efficiently. Starting from paper maps hundred years ago, multiple type of maps are available with point of interest, real-time traffic update or displaying micro-blogs from social media. In this paper, we introduce Hadath, a system that displays multi-resolution live events of interest from a variety of available data sources. the system has been designed to be able to handle multiple type of inputs by encapsulating incoming unstructured data into generic data packets. System extracts local events of interest from generic data packets and identify their spatio-temporal scope to display such events on a map, so that as a user changes the zoom level, only events of appropriate scope are displayed. this allows us to show live events in correspondence to the scale of view - when viewing at a city scale, we see events of higher significance, while zooming in to a neighbourhood, events of a more local interest are highlighted. the final output creates a unique and dynamic map browsing experience. Finally, to validate our proposed system, we conducted experiments on social media data.

Infertility affects around 15% of couples worldwide. Male fertility problems include poor sperm quality and low sperm count. the advanced fertility treatment methods like ICSI are nowadays supported by vision systems to assist embryologists in selecting good quality sperm. Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) provides quantitative and qualitative sperm analysis concerning concentration, motility, morphology, vitality, and fragmentation. However, fertility assessment algorithms often neglect individual spermatozoon tail and its beating patterns because recognizing the tails in blurry microscopic images reliably is challenging. In this article, we propose that models trained with head and tail part classes can better localize parts and segment the whole spermatozoon objects. Usually, the training of segmentation sperm models is supported by image-level augmentation. We argue that models guided by class-specific data augmentation attend to less discriminative sperm parts. To demonstrate this, we decouple the augmentation into object-level and background augmentation for the sperm part segmentation problem. Our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the SegSperm dataset. Moreover, our ablation studies confirm the effectiveness of the proposed part-based object representation and augmentation.

the Internet of things-empowered precision irrigation management system with LoRaWAN technology is presented given the growing food requirements across the world and pressing calls for judicious use of water in agriculture. Flow Pilot, specifically designed for chili farms, optimizes water application while enhancing crop health using precise and automated irrigation. the Flow Pilot features advanced sensors such as soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and rain sensors that collect real-time environmental data transmitted over a LoRaWAN network for analysis. Flow Pilot uses the Machine learning algorithm by analyzing sensor data to make localized irrigation recommendations based on crop needs, environmental factors, and weather forecasting. LoRaWAN gateways will support this for long-ranged communications over power-consuming agricultural fields. Besides this, it can use different network architectures. there is also an automated water tank management module that regulates the supply of water and pH levels to have optimal conditions for crop growth. A visually simple dashboard interface enables farmers to inspect and operate irrigation processes remotely, hence rendering the whole process far more efficient. Finally, over the extensive period of field tests executed by the project, Flow Pilot was able to save water, improve crop yields, and help support sustainable agriculture. For example, this testing supports the potential of IoT with LoRaWAN technologies, such as the Flow Pilot implementation, for a game change in conventional irrigation practices into a modern, scalable, and reliable solution.

With the rapidly growing number of connected smart devices deployed and diverse services provided in the Internet of things (IoT), service selection system, which discovers appropriate services for users, is becoming more and more important. However, challenges exist as a result of the highly heterogeneous environments, characteristics of various kinds of users and the expanding number of services offered by many service providers, which have promising applications in IoT. In the meantime, users' contexts (e.g., location, time, and surroundings), wildly utilized in the IoT scenario to better satisfy individuals' demands, raises privacy issues. To address these problems, we propose a privacy-preserving mobile edge computing (MEC) enabled context-aware service selection system over software defined networks (SDN) in IoT to provide suitable services for end users, where the edge nodes (ENs) cache and process information, acting as cooperative learners. Utilizing the users' feedback and the historical records monitored by the SDN-based network, our contextual online learning algorithm achieves high prediction accuracy. Besides, instead of considering them as individual items, we utilize a top-down cover tree structure to handle service data, which supports ever-increasing large-scale datasets and complex situations. We theoretically prove that the accumulative regret of our algorithm has a sublinear bound and our numerical results confirm that our algorithm can handle big data problems while achieving a balance between privacy-preserving level and service selection accuracy.
