Achieving high scalability for dynamical adaptive algorithms in HPC is a non-trivial task. In this contex, explicit data migration is typically applied which comes with several challenges such as criteria when and where to migrate data or additional bandwidth requirements. In our work, we use an alternative to data-migration, namely compute-migration on cache-coherent memory systems. We focus on migrating computational power for simulations with dynamical adaptive grids with invasive paradigm. An extension to our existing core-distribution scheduler is presented, distributing the cores depending on the requirements specified by each parallel program instance. In addition, a programming pattern for the hybrid parallel application code is presented to overcome deadlock issues created by applying invasive computing. We validate our approach with benchmark computations for a simulation with artificial workload and furthermore for a realistic scenario based on dynamical adaptive shallow water simulations. those benchmarks are conducted within a hybrid parallelization environment on a 40-core HPC node. On this shared-memory system, our invasive approach results in faster execution times and higher hardware utilization than the non-invasive approach. Our approach can be applied in general to similar classes of simulations on dynamical adaptive grids.

Stream processing applications have high-demanding performance requirements that are hard to tackle using traditional parallel models on modern many-core architectures, such as GPUs. On the other hand, recent dataflow computing models can naturally exploit parallelism for a wide class of applications. this work presents an extension to an existing dataflow library for Java. the library extension implements high-level constructs with multiple command queues to enable the superposition of memory operations and kernel executions on GPUs. Experimental results show that significant speedup can be achieved for a subset of well-known stream processing applications: Volume Ray-Casting, Path-Tracing and Sobel Filter.

We propose an idea to speed up instruction execution through a probabilistic approach, using the parallelism offered by quantum computers. For this, we divide the instruction set of an arbitrary quantum instruction set architecture (QISA) into separate groups and then bias certain qubits representing the group so that only the instructions within the group have a high probability of getting executed in a quantum processor. therefore, the result generated will be the superimposition of the qubits as if all the instructions within the group were executed simultaneously. We show that we can achieve a significant design improvement compared to classical computer.

Today, it is commonly accepted that speedup and efficiency are not granted automatically when developing or porting software for high performance computing (HPC) platforms. the reasons are manifold and actively investigated in the community. Software monitors are essential for these studies as they provide the raw performance data to be analyzed. We propose an online monitoring workflow for event-based performance analysis that takes into account the significant changes in system architecture towards the development of exascale supercomputers. Critical properties are: communication across large numbers of processing elements, limited I/O capabilities, and a decreasing memory-per- core ratio. We present a hierarchical data management and steering workflow that directly couples the application, measurement, and analysis processes, thus eliminating the need for extensive communication and buffering. the workflow is closely integrated with the native system communication API to enable best communication across processing elements. the memory issue is addressed with a new lossy hierarchical data compression technique for in-memory storage, intended for small, fixed-size buffers. Further, we abandon secondary storage to avoid potential I/O challenges. We demonstrate the feasibility of our design with a prototype implementation that features services for data collection, analysis, and runtime compression. Our evaluation extrapolates results obtained with the NAS Parallel Benchmarks at up to 2,048 processes to an exascale workflow.

Due to their highly parallel multi-cores architecture, GPUs are being increasingly used in a wide range of computationally intensive applications. Compared to CPUs, GPUs can achieve higher performances at accelerating the programs' execution in an energy-efficient way. therefore GPGPU computing is useful for high performance computing applications and in many scientific research fields. In order to bring further performance improvements, GPU clusters are increasingly adopted. the energy consumed by GPUs cannot be neglected. therefore, an energy-efficient time scheduling of the programs that are going to be executed by the parallel GPUs based on their deadline as well as the assigned priorities could be deployed to face their energetic avidity. For this reason, we present in this paper a model enabling the measure of the power consumption and the time execution of some elementary operations running on a single GPU using a new developed energy measurement protocol. Consequently, using our methodology, energy needs of a program could be predicted, allowing a better task scheduling.

In this work, we propose a new distributed run-time environment, which we called cJava, that enables multithread Java applications to execute in clusters transparently. Our implementation of cJava supports the distributed shared memory (DSM) which required significant extensions to the original Java virtual machine (JVM). First, a distributed object manager was incorporated to the JVM's memory management subsystem for creating a global object space. Second, synchronized accesses to the global object space were extended so that they could use the lock() and unlock() primitives that cJava's DSM supports. third, cJava adapted the thread subsystem to enable remote creation and global monitors. Last, a subsystem for remote signaling was added to the original JVM. the main advantage of cJava is that it can execute existing multithread Java applications straightaway. Most importantly, our results of cJava's performance across several benchmarks show that cJava offers an efficient run-time system for executing transparently multithread Java applications in clusters.

the necessity for capping carbon emission has significantly restricted the potential of modern data centers. For this matter, both industry and academia are proactively seeking opportunities on cross-layer power management schemes that could open a door for sustainable high-performance computing platform. In this paper we investigate an emerging trend in the IT industry: using promising onsite distributed generation (DG) techniques to provide premium clean energy to the computing load. We develop data center power demand shaping (PDS), a novel technique that allows data centers to utilize onsite green energy efficiently. In contrast to prior design, PDS takes advantage of a so-far unexplored power supply feature, i.e., the load following capabilities of DG systems to avoid the high performance penalty issue incurred during supply tracking. In addition, PDS features two adaptive power management schemes: DGR Boost and UPS Boost. these two workload-aware optimization methods leverage mature computer tuning knobs to achieve attractive data center performance improvement. Using real-world data center traces and industry data of distributed generation systems, we show that our technique can come within 1.2% performance of an ideal oracle, which is roughly a 37% improvement over existing supply tracking based design. Our design could save over 100 metric tons of carbon emissions annually for a 10MW data center.

With the evolution of technology, Grids cannot be considered any more solely as a federation of a modest number of powerful cluster computers. Trends show that future Grids will instead be composed of extremely large numbers of individual machines, which may or may not be part of a high-performance cluster. Such evolution forces one to reconsider the design of a number of important Grid services. this paper explores a number of those, and argues that technologies originally developed in the content delivery network and in the peer-to-peer communities may help solve some of the issues that next-generation technologies will face.

this paper presents and evaluates a governmental application that has been ported to run in a Grid. the Gerpav application is used in the city of Porto Alegre, located in the south of Brazil, to maintain and plan the investments in the city road system, and Grid technology brought substantial performance gains to its distributed version called GerpavGrid. We describe several optimizations strategies used in GerpavGrid to move the bottleneck of the sequential application from database to memory to facilitate distribution of tasks in the Grid. Results of its execution in a real Grid are also presented, and show that a Grid can be also an interesting execution platform for non-classical HPC applications that are database intensive.

Video streams, either in form of on-demand streaming or live streaming, usually have to be converted (i.e., transcoded) based on the characteristics (e.g., spatial resolution) of clients' devices. Transcoding is a computationally expensive operation, therefore, streaming service providers currently store numerous transcoded versions of the same video to serve different types of client devices. However, recent studies show that accessing video streams have a long tail distribution. that is, there are few popular videos that are frequently accessed while the majority of them are accessed infrequently. the idea we propose in this research is to transcode the infrequently accessed videos in a on-demand (i.e., lazy) manner. Due to the cost of maintaining infrastructure, streaming service providers (e.g., Netflix) are commonly using cloud services. However, the challenge in utilizing cloud services for video transcoding is how to deploy cloud resources in a cost-efficient manner without any major impact on the quality of video streams. To address the challenge, in this research, we present an architecture for on-demand transcoding of video streams. the architecture provides a platform for streaming service providers to utilize cloud resources in a cost-efficient manner and with respect to the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of video streams. In particular, the architecture includes a QoS-aware scheduling component to efficiently map video streams to cloud resources, and a cost-efficient dynamic (i.e., elastic) resource provisioning policy that adapts the resource acquisition with respect to the video streaming QoS requirements.
