Monte Carlo (MC) techniques are often used to price complex financial derivatives. the computational effort can be substantial when high accuracy is required. However, MC computations are latency tolerant, and are thu...
this paper describes a scalable and reliable multicast communication service for developing distributed applications in Java. the service is based on MPDT, a dual-token logical ring-based multicast protocol proposed b...
Describes a generic mechanism to migrate threads in heterogeneous distributed environments. To maintain high portability and flexibility, thread migration is implemented at the language level. At compile-time, a pre-p...
the 3D triangle mesh is the dominant representation used in the parallel rendering of 3D geometric models. However, the explosive growth in the complexity of the mesh-based 3D models overwhelms the communication bandw...
Non-deterministic choice supports efficient parallel speculation, but unrestricted non-determinism destroys the referential transparency of purely-declarative languages by removing unfoldability and it bears the dange...

Distributed computing, the exploitation of idle cycles on pervasive desktop PC systems, offers the opportunity to increase the available computing power by orders of magnitude (10-1,000 times). However, for desktop PC distributed computing to be widely accepted within enterprises, the systems much achieve high levels of robustness, security, scalability, unobtrusiveness and manageability. We describe the Entropia distributed computing system as a case study, detailing its internal architecture and philosophy in attacking these key problems. In particular, key aspects of the Entropia system include the use of (1) scalable Web/database technology for system management, (2) network tunneling and application name-spaces for logical connectivity, (3) binary sand-boxing technology for security and unobtrusiveness, and (4) an open integration model to allow applications from many sources to be incorporated. these technologies are combined to produce a robust, flexible, high-performance system which is now in use in numerous enterprises, supporting a wide range of applications.
Design of next-generation computing and communication systems will be application-driven, and requires fundamental advances in 1) performance engineering frameworks, methods, and tools, and 2) adaptive compilation and...

At Sandia National Laboratories, a Data Services system has been developed to provide web-based access to high-performancecomputing clusters that host a set Of post-processing applications for very large-scale data manipulation and visualization. A three-tier architecture provides a meta-framework for a collection of smaller frameworks, each of which satisfies a particular aspect of the overall system, including frameworks for a common data model, distributed resource management, component-based software on the cluster, and security. A prototype implementation has been completed which demonstrates the use of all of these frameworks in an integrated environment to provide end users the ability to manage and understand simulation results for very large, complex problems.
