this paper presents a new methodology for implementing fast synchronization on scalable cache-coherent multiprocessors, through the use of hybrid primitives. Hybrid primitives leverage commodity hardware to speed-up the execution of the atomic remote Read-Modify-Write (RMW) instructions employed in synchronization algorithms to resolve contending processors, while exploiting the caches to reduce network traffic during the waiting and release phases of a synchronization primitive. We present a systematic methodology for transforming any synchronization primitive that uses RMW instructions into a hybrid one. We then provide experimental evidence on the effectiveness of using hybrid primitives in the implementation of spin locks, barriers and lock-free queues, in microbenchmarks and parallel applications on a SGI Origin 2000.

An optical signal has the characteristics of interconnection and parallelism; it can be processed and transferred through complex amplitude, full parallel, high performance and jillion interconnection. this paper introduces the characteristics and physical essence of optical interconnection. through analyzing matrix-vector multiplication and matrix-matrix multiplication, to explain the optical neural networks processing principle.

Signal processing usually requires extremely high computing power. Fortunately, with advance in VLSI technology, the required performance could be achieved with more functional units performing concurrent computations on a chip. Supplying demanding data streams to these computational units soon becomes the system-performance bottleneck because of slow off-chip I/O and memory with less improvement speed. We have proposed a data stream generation (DSG) scheme that explores the data reuse property existing in most signal processing algorithms while supplying appropriate data sequences. this scheme can make the VLSI signal processors much more latency and cost efficient. In the illustrating example, our DSG supplies the specified streams with 4-cycle setup time at the beginning (latency), instead of 48 cycles for each block in conventional FIFO approaches and only requires 1/6-storage elements.

In this paper, the design of optimal receive filter banks for transmultiplexer-based data transmission over frequency selective channels is investigated. A new design strategy based on the principle of memory truncation, rather than equalization, is presented. through the receive filters, each subchannel is truncated to a certain length, and the actual data detection is then carried out via low-complexity, independently operating Viterbi detectors. Design examples are presented for high-speed transmission over copper wires. the examples show that memory truncation allows significant performance improvements over MMSE equalization.

Cubic phase coupling is a very important topic in analyzing cubic nonlinear and multi-harmonic signals. the conventional cubic phase coupling analysis is usually by done by the trispectrum which has an enormous computational burden and inconspicuous physical meaning. In this paper a 2 1/2 -dimensional spectrum method (2 1/2 DSM) based on fourth-order cumulants is used to analyze cubic phase coupling. the performance and advantage of 2 1/2 DSM compared with the power spectrum are fully investigated and applied in feature extraction from ship-radiated noise is presented. Simulation results show that using this method to analyze cubic phase coupling possesses several advantages: small calculation burden, fast computing speed and high robustness under noise conditions. Analyzing true ship-radiated noise data shows that it can be used to discriminate different type of ships.

A highly cost-effective adaptive routing algorithm for n-D meshes is designed. It employs only two virtual channels. the planar routing and the 2D VBMAR are used as constructs for it. Routing freedom is greatly enhanced to improve performance. As a result, the algorithm features load balance and high adaptivity. Deadlock freedom of the algorithm is proved. Extensive simulations show that it not only outperforms an algorithm with equal virtual channels, but also excels the fully routing algorithm with much more virtual channels.

Power dissipation and thermal issues are increasingly significant in modern processors. As a result, it is crucial that power/performance tradeoffs be made more visible to chip architects and even compiler writers, in addition to circuit designers. Most existing power analysis tools achieve high accuracy by calculating power estimates for designs only after layout or floorplanning are complete. In addition to being available only late in the design process, such tools are often quite slow, which compounds the difficulty of running them for a large space of design possibilities. this paper presents Wattch, a framework for analyzing and optimizing microprocessor power dissipation at the architecture-level. Wattch is 1000X or more faster than existing layout-level power tools, and yet maintains accuracy within 10% of their estimates as verified using industry tools on leading-edge designs. this paper presents several validations of Wattch's accuracy. In addition, we present three examples that demonstrate how architects or compiler writers might use Wattch to evaluate power consumption in their design process. We see Wattch as a complement to existing lower-level tools; it allows architects to explore and cull the design space early on, using faster, higher-level tools. It also opens up the field of power-efficient computing to a wider range of researchers by providing a power evaluation methodology within the portable and familiar SimpleScalar framework.

Digital convergence is precipitating the addition of soft real-time applications to mainstream desktop and server operating environments. Most traditional debuggers for mainstream systems lack a notion of temporal correctness, making them unsuitable for real-time system design and analysis. We propose leveraging complete system simulation to build a temporal debugger which is capable of analyzing mixed real-world workloads. Traditional real-time system debuggers based on simulation utilize slow, but accurate, simulators. Complete system simulators accept an approximate model of time in exchange for higher performance. the higher performance allows these simulators to analyze high-end commercial operating systems and applications. We describe a temporal debugger design based on complete system simulation and report on some early experiences in analyzing a simple workload. the tool offers a non-intrusive, predictable environment for debugging complex workloads with partial real-time constraints. the simulator foundation allows for interactive debugging of time-critical sequences while preserving a model of execution time flow.

this paper describes architecture and implementation of the ULTRAVIS system, a pure software solution for versatile and fast volume rendering. It provides perspective raycasting, tri-linear interpolation, on-the-fly classification using look-up tables, gradient shading (both diffuse and specular reflection), four light sources, and alpha blending. For high frame rates, early ray termination and empty space skipping are implemented. Furthermore, subsampling during motion is provided. the system accepts raw data sets of 8-bit voxels as well as pre-segmented data sets containing up to 16 different materials. For gradient shading, the gradients are precomputed and included in 32-bit voxels. Additionally, the system supports volume animation, i.e., the display of a sequence of data sets. the system was specifically designed for Pentium III CPUs, and makes extensive use of MMX and Streaming SIMD instructions. It is a multi-threaded application and thus takes advantage of multiprocessor platforms. Time-critical portions of the code have been hand-optimized in assembler. As a result, the system can achieve interactive to real-time performance. ULTRAVIS runs on the Windows NT 4.0 operating system on standard PCs.

All-to-all communication is one of the most dense communication patterns and occurs in many important applications in parallel computing. In this paper, we present a new all-to-all broadcast algorithm in all-port mesh and torus networks. Unlike existing all-to-all broadcast algorithms, the new algorithm takes advantage of overlapping of message switching time and transmission time, and achieves optimal transmission time for all-to-all broadcast. In addition, in most cases, the total communication delay is close to the lower bound of all-to-ail broadcast within a small constant range. Finally, the algorithm is conceptually simple, and symmetrical for every message and every node so that it can be easily implemented in hardware and achieves the optimum in practice.
