Almost thirty years ago, cscw published an article written by Joan Greenbaum detailing how and why cscw should consider the framing of "labor"over "work"in researching and designing information systems [17]. this argument is especially salient in the present day, with the increasing wariness of algorithmically-mediated monitoring, surveillance, automation, and management in work processes. Despite its salience, Greenbaum's paper has had relatively low engagement in cscw so far. As such, this workshop responds to Greenbaum's call-to-action, asking: 1) Where is cscw research now in thinking about "work"vs. "labor"in designing systems? and 2) How can we support emerging cscw scholars in grounding themselves in theories of work that includes - if not centers - a labor-oriented economic frame? Following a Freirean pedagogy model of social action involving a cycle of reflection and action, this workshop will aim to generate a critical consciousness around labor issues in cscw. Ultimately, by crafting individual commitments to labor, this workshop will aim to contribute to a more worker-centered future. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Ensuring user-centered phishing detection is a significant challenge due to the difficulty in distinguishing threats. To address this, we propose a personalized tool - Holistic User-Centered Identification of threats at the Edge (HUCITE). Our system utilizes probabilistic logic to provide real-time risk estimates for local machines and employs simple cartoons as a user interface. Our approach focuses on identifying anomalies in a single machine and user browsing history for the generation of a personalized green list and global threat information for a shared red list. this approach enables blocking and identification of phishing websites, potentially malicious scripts, unfamiliar domains, and previously unencountered certificate authorities. By creating a zone of safety for a specific user and identifying departures from that zone, our approach addresses the limitations of traditional anomaly detection techniques. We present the underlying architecture and approach to local risk identification, reporting on an in-lab experiment involving 45 participants to test the effectiveness of our system in various stress conditions affecting users' phishing perception. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Exploring Indie Game Development: Team Practices and social Experiences in A Creativity-Centric Technology Community

the emergence of various interest-based online communities has led to the popularity of new forms of distributed creative teamwork such as citizen science, crowdsourcing, and open source software development. these new phenomena further complicate the context and content of distributed creative teamwork: what are the characteristics of these new forms of creative teams? And how do they shape people's perceptions and social experiences of distributed creative teams? In this paper, we report our empirical research of the team characteristics and practices in a creativity-centric technology community (i.e., independent [indie] game development) in hopes of exploring these questions. Our findings show that 1) indie game development teams are formed upon shared aspirations and use various strategies to collaborate with friends or online strangers;and their team practices are achieved through a balance between individual creativity and collective vision as well as a collaborative learning for problem solving and self-improvement;and 2) these teams mediate new forms of social interaction and collaborative experiences, featuring a mix of online comradery and weak social ties, and a mix of self-confidence and self-confliction. Using this new dataset and research context, we confirm and extend existing theories of distributed creative teams in cscw. We also argue that studying these small-scale, self-selected, and interest-based teams can inform the design of collaborative systems to support various creative teams' social needs.

Self-harm is the infliction of pain or injury onto oneself. though historically these behaviors were relegated to the fringes of communities, information technology now enables new ways to foster and encourage these dangerous activities. this paper defines the concept of digital self-harm as the online communication and activity that leads to, supports, or exacerbates, non-suicidal yet intentional harm or impairment of an individual's physical wellbeing. We outline a research agenda for the cscw community to understand the correlation and possible causation of offline self-harm behaviors due to online activities, and to design and assess technologies focused on prevention, mitigation and treatment. CAUTION: this paper includes media that could potentially be triggering to those dealing with an eating disorder or with other self-harm related illnesses. Please use caution when reading or disseminating this paper.

social movements use social computing systems to complement offline mobilizations, but prior literature has focused almost exclusively on movement actor's use of social media. In this paper, we analyze participation and attention to topics connected with the Black Lives Matter movement in the English language version of Wikipedia between 2014 and 2016. Our results point to the use of Wikipedia to (1) intensively document and connect historical and contemporary events, (2) collaboratively migrate activity to support coverage of new events, and (3) dynamically re-appraise preexisting knowledge in the aftermath of new events. these findings reveal patterns of behavior that complement theories of collective memory and collective action and help explain how social computing systems can encode and retrieve knowledge about social movements as they unfold.

Urban transport systems are increasingly important for modern cities as they provide sustainable transport and a positive social environment. the systems that allow controlling transport infrastructures integrate many legacy systems and require increasing resources for maintenance. Authorities managing public transport facilities not only need to dynamically adapt to the daily fluctuations in city life, but they also strive to be in constant dialogue with the citizens. In this poster paper, we present our preliminary insights from a study where we looked closely at the operations centre of a light rail and bus operator in a major German city. through contextual inquiry, we chart emerging issues and design challenges. We showcase how urban facility managers negotiate legacy systems and cooperate with each other to keep transport systems functioning.

One of the primary goals of academic conferences is to promote scientific exchange of advances among people who may otherwise not have the opportunity to hear from one another. We present Confer, a tool designed to help conference attendees find interesting papers and talks, discover and meet people with shared interests, and manage their time using a personalized schedule for the conference. So far, we have deployed Confer to 17 academic conferences including several years of CHI and cscw. Confer is also the primary program tool for cscw 2016. Log analysis and survey results have shown that the tool helps conference attendees find interesting papers and manage their schedule. Furthermore the recommendation data generated from the tool has been used by conference organizers to help plan conference schedules as well as to organize social gatherings. Finally, the meetup feature seeks to help conference attendees reach out to other attendees with similar interests.
