We present a general data parallel formulation for highly irregular problems in High Performance Fortran (HPF). Our formulation consists of (1) a method for linearizing irregular data structures (2) a data parallel implementation (in HPF) of graph partitioning algorithms applied to the linearized data structure, (3) techniques for expressing irregular communication and nonuniform computations associated with the elements of linearized data structures. We demonstrate and evaluate our formulation on a parallel, hierarchical N-body method for the evaluation of potentials and forces of nonuniform particle distributions. Our experimental results demonstrate that efficient data parallel (HPF) implementations of highly nonuniform problems are feasible with the proper language/compiler/runtime support. Our data parallel N-body code provides a much needed 'benchmark' code for evaluating and improving HPF compilers.

Multimedia applications operate on downstreams. A large class of multimedia applications is described by the macro-dataflow graph model. this study attempted to examine how such multimedia applications can be compiled to run efficiently on parallel machines, by optimizing both throughput (T) and latency (L), using two techniques based on task speedup functions. the first step chooses an appropriate pipeline structure for the system while the second exploits the dataset parallelism intrinsic in the period datastream, and runs multiple datasets in parallel (task/cluster multiplicity) for each clustering. Both techniques were used to compile real-time image-processing problems on an NCUBE-2 multiprocessor. the two techniques showed substantial performance gains.

High Performance Fortran (HPF) has emerged as a standard language for data parallel computing. However, a wide variety of scientific applications are best programmed by a combination of task and data parallelism. therefore, a good model of task parallelism is important for continued success of HPF for parallel programming. this paper presents a task parallelism model that is simple, elegant, and relatively easy to implement in an HPF environment. Task parallelism is exploited by mechanisms for dividing processors into sub-groups and mapping computations and data onto processor subgroups. this model of task parallelism has been implemented in the Fx compiler at Carnegie Mellon University. the paper addresses the main issues in compiling integrated task and data parallel programs and reports on the use of this model for programming various flat and nested task structures. Performance results are presented for a set of programs spanning signal processing, image processing, computer vision and environment modeling. A variant of this task model is a new approved extension of HPF and this paper offers insight into the power of expression and ease of implementation of this extension.

this paper presents a new parallel volume rendering algorithm and implementation, based on shear warp factorization, for shared address space multiprocessors. Starting from an existing parallel shear-warp renderer, we use increasingly detailed performance measurements on real machines and simulators to understand performance bottlenecks. this leads us to a new parallel implementation that substantially outperforms and out-scales the old one on a range of shared address space platforms, from bus-based centralized memory machine to hardware-coherent distributed memory machines to networks of computers connected by page-based shared virtual memory. the results demonstrate that real time volume rendering is promising on general purpose multiprocessors, and illustrate the utility of tool hierarchies in conjunction with algorithmic and application knowledge to understand memory system interactions and improve parallel algorithms.

parallel algorithm designers need computational models that take first order system costs into account, but are also simple enough to use in practice. this paper introduces the LoPC model, which is inspired by the LogP model but accounts for contention for message processing resources in parallel algorithms on a multiprocessor or network of workstations. LoPC takes the L, o and P parameters directly from the LogP model and uses them to predict the cost of contention, C. this paper defines the LoPC model and derives the general form of the model for parallel applications that communicate via active messages. Model modifications for systems that implement coherent shared memory abstractions are also discussed. We carry out the analysis for two important classes of applications that have irregular communication. In the case of parallel applications with homogeneous all-to-any communication, such as sparse matrix computations, the analysis yields a simple rule of thumb and insight into contention costs. In the case of parallel client-server algorithms, the LoPC analysis provides a simple and accurate calculation of the optimal allocation of nodes between clients and servers. the LoPC estimates for these applications are shown to be accurate when compared against event driven simulation and against a sparse matrix computation on the MIT Alewife multiprocessor.

Loop tiling and communication optimizations, such as message pipelining and aggregation, can achieve optimized and robust memory performance by proactively managing storage and data movement. In this paper, we generalize these techniques to pointer-based data structures (PBDSs). Our approach, dynamic pointer alignment (DPA), has two components. the compiler decomposes a program into non-blocking threads that operate on specific pointers and labels thread creation sites with their corresponding pointers. At runtime, an explicit mapping from pointers to dependent threads is updated at thread creation and is used to dynamically schedule both threads and communication, such that threads using the same objects execute together, communication overlaps with local work, and messages are aggregated. We have implemented DPA to optimize remote reads to global PBDSs on parallel machines. Our empirical results on the force computation phases of two applications that use sophisticated PBDSs, Barnes-Hut and FMM, show that DPA achieves good absolute performance and speedups by enabling tiling and communication optimizations on the CRAY T3D.

Some of the most common parallel programming idioms include locks, barriers, and reduction operations. the interaction of these programming idioms with the multiprocessor's coherence protocol has a significant impact on performance. In addition, the advent of machines that support multiple coherence protocols prompts the question of how to best implement such parallel constructs, i.e. what combination of implementation and coherence protocol yields the best performance. In this paper we study the running time and communication behavior of (1) centralized (ticket) and MCS spin locks, (2) centralized, dissemination, and tree-based barriers, and (3) parallel and sequential reductions, under pure and competitive update coherence protocols;results for write-invalidate protocol are presented mostly for comparison purposes. Our experiments indicate that parallel programming techniques that are well-established for write invalidate protocols, such as MCS locks and parallel reductions, are often inappropriate for update-based protocols. In contrast, techniques such as dissemination and tree barriers achieve superior performance under update-based protocols. Our results also show that the implementation of parallel programming idioms must take the coherence protocol into account, since update-based protocols often lead to different design decisions than write invalidate protocols. Our main conclusion is that protocol-conscious implementation of parallel programming structures can significantly improve application performance;for multiprocessors that can support more than one coherence protocol both the protocol and implementation should be taken into account when exploiting parallel constructs.

Global addressing of shared data simplifies parallel programming and complements message passing models commonly found in distributed memory machines. A number of programming systems have been designed that synthesize global addressing purely in software on such machines. these systems provide a number of communication mechanisms to mitigate the effect of high communication latencies and overheads. this study compares the mechanisms in two representative all-software systems: CRL and Split-C. CRL uses region-based caching while Split-C uses split-phase and push-based data transfers for optimizing communication performance. Both systems take advantage of bulk data transfers. By implementing a set of parallel applications in both CRL and Split-C, and running them on the IBM SP2, Meiko CS-2 and two simulated architectures, we find that split-phase and push-based bulk data transfers are essential for good performance. Region-based caching benefits applications with irregular structure and with sufficient temporal locality, especially under high communication latencies. However, caching also hurts performance when there is insufficient data reuse or when the size of caching granularity is mismatched with the communication granularity. We find the programming complexity of the communication mechanisms in both languages to be comparable. Based on our results, we recommend that an ideal system intended to support diverse applications on parallel platforms should incorporate the communication mechanisms in CRL and Split-C.

this paper describes the design and implementation of a garbage collection scheme on large-scale distributed-memory computers and reports various experimental results. the collector is based on the conservative GC library by Boehm & Weiser. Each processor traces local pointers using the GC library while traversing remote pointers by exchanging 'mark messages' between processors. It exhibits a promising performance - in the most space-intensive settings we tested, the total collection overhead ranges from 5% up to 15% of the application running time (excluding idle time). We not only examine basic performance figures such as the total overhead or latency of a global collection, but also demonstrate how local collection scheduling strategies affect application performance. In our collector, a local collection is scheduled either independently or synchronously. Experimental results show that the benefit of independent local collections has been overstated in the literature. Independent local collections slowed down application performance to 40%, by increasing the average communication latency. Synchronized local collections exhibit much more robust performance characteristics than independent local collections and the overhead for global synchronization is not significant. Furthermore, we show that an adaptive collection scheduler can select the appropriate local collection strategy based on the application's behavior. the collector has been used in a concurrent object-oriented language ABCL/f and the performance is measured on a large-scale parallel computer (256 processors) using four non-trivial applications written in ABCL/f.
