the article addresses the importance of accurate modeling and simulation of the behavior of photovoltaic, modules (PVs) to ensure optimal solar PV system performance. An evaluation of the effectiveness of new optimization tools in the parameter estimation process of the first global nonlinear model known to the scientific community is proposed. the research aims to verify whether different optimization tools can contribute to improve the accuracy and efficiency in parameter estimation, resulting in improved modeling and performance prediction of PV systems under different environmental conditions. © 2023 IEEE.

Years of online manifestos and mass killings by Domestic Violent Extremists (DVEs) in the U.S. and other nations indicate a grave global crisis. DVEs employ online propaganda to maximize their influence during societal crises and become the conduits to amplifying hate, organizing, and mobilizing to possibly influence non-extremists. User behavior modeling provides a promising approach to characterize behavioral patterns of DVEs and model the evolving identities of users. However, empirical research falls short to create explanatory user behavior modeling techniques for learning the classes of DVE user identity. Specifically, existing techniques lack measures to make sense of DVEs’ online behavior relating to the well-known factors such as social relationships and beliefs that contribute to shaping one’s identity. Guided by social science theories, primarily Social Identity theory (SIT), this study proposes an explanatory and scalable user modeling approach that leverages unsupervised machine learning to analyze and model the identity classes of users. We model the identity classes of DVEs through a set of derived behavioral attributes–sociability, reach, and subjectivity from user profile metadata available in streaming social media data that helps capture the factors of social relations and attitudes partially but rapidly at scale and in near real-time. Using the data of Twitter conversations leading up to the 2021 January 6th U.S. Capitol attack, this study presents novel insights on how DVEs identities can be discovered and present better distinct analyses to understand their differences. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Stakeholders can struggle to understand and engage with process models due to a mismatch between the technical language used and their own domain-specific jargon and personal communication styles. the paper explores the application of transformer-based architectures to enhance the representation of process models and additional multimodal process data by tailoring them to the language of stakeholders. We present an approach that personalizes process model representations through two types of paraphrasers: one that aligns with domain-specific jargon and another that adapts to individual stakeholder styles. We developed a golden dataset from process model-stakeholder interaction simulation and a silver dataset using large language models to train and validate our approach. Initial findings suggest that these methods could enhance stakeholder engagement and contribute to better teaching of process mining and procedural thinking. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

the electrolyte filling process of lithium-ion batteries is characterized by extensive wetting times and significant costs for experimental process design, which is becoming increasingly relevant in the current landscape of fast-evolving cell designs to optimize energy density. In this study, an approach for applying computational fluid dynamics to simulate the flow of liquid electrolyte through the battery void volume and porous cell stack is shown. Results of the simulation on pore scale are used to calculate the permeability of the cell stack, which provides an input parameter for the simulation on cell scale. On a cell scale, the calculated parameters act as a resistance value of the cell stack, enabling the modeling of the interaction between dosing and wetting. the detailed model setup including simulation parameters is provided, so that cell manufacturers and researchers will be able to set up individual simulation models to predict the filling behavior during cell development. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. In this work, we analyze the circumstances under which social influence operations are likely to succeed. these circumstances include the selection of Confederate agents to execute intentional perturbations and the selection of Perturbation strategies. We use Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) as a simulation technique to observe the effect of intentional stance perturbations on scale-free networks. We develop a co-evolutionary social influence model to interrogate the tradeoff between perturbing stance and maintaining influence when these variables are linked through homophily. In our experiments, we observe that stances in a network will converge in sufficient simulation timesteps, influential agents are the best Confederates and the optimal Perturbation strategy involves the cascade of local ego networks. Finally, our experimental results support the theory of tipping points and are in line with empirical findings suggesting that 20–25% of agents need to be Confederates before a change in consensus can be achieved. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

the collective escape of predators by prey is a classic example of adaptive behavior in animal groups. Across species, prey has evolved a large repertoire of individual evasive maneuvers they can use to evade predators. With recent technological advances, more empirical data of collective escape is becoming available, and a large variation in the collective dynamics of different species is apparent. However, given the complexity of patterns of collective escape, we are still lacking the tools to understand their emergence. Computational models that can link rules of individual behavior to patterns of collective escape are needed, but species-specific motion and escape characteristics that will allow the link between behavior and eco-evolutionary dynamics of a given species are rarely included in agent-based models of collective behavior. Here, to tackle this challenge, we introduce a framework that uses individual-based state machines to model spatio-temporal dynamics of collective escape. A synthetic agent in our framework can switch its behavior between 'flocking' with different coordination specifics (e.g., quicker interactions when vigilant) and 'escape' with various maneuvers through a dynamic Markov-chain, depending on its local information (e.g., its relative position to the predator). A user can compose a new agent-based model adjusted to empirical data by choosing a set of states (which includes rules of motion, interaction, and escape), their temporal order, and a detailed parameterization. the flexibility and structure of our software allows substantial changes in a model with very minimal code alterations, showing great potential for future use to identify the underlying mechanisms of collective escape across species and ecological contexts.

the newly developed control methodology, which omits the phase-locked loop (PLL) and voltage sensor, has garnered considerable attention for its rapid dynamic response and reduced hardware expenses. Nonetheless, its stability concerns have not yet been thoroughly scrutinized. In this paper, the impedance modeling of the PLL-less and voltage sensorless control strategy has been established. the impedance model has been contrasted with the traditional PLL-based control scheme. Our findings demonstrate that the PLL-less and voltage sensorless control approach lacks the negative resistance behavior that is frequently observed in the traditional scheme, which results in unstable operations. Moreover, the role of virtual resistance has been examined. To substantiate the aforementioned findings, simulation results are presented. © 2023 IEEE.

Many researchers focus on developing virtual testbeds to assess the magnitude of cyberattack damage and evaluate the effectiveness of cyber defense strategies in different cyber attack scenarios. these testbeds provide a controlled and cost-effective environment for simulating attacks and studying their impact on organizational security. One of the major challenges in developing such testbeds is accurately capturing the human factors in cybersecurity. Phishing attacks, in particular, exploit human vulnerabilities and can lead to significant security breaches. However, modeling and simulating human susceptibility to phishing in virtual environments is complex due to the dynamic nature of human behavior and the interplay of various factors. this paper addresses this challenge by proposing an agent-based modeling framework that incorporates human factors to simulate dynamic phishing susceptibility. the framework allows modeler to specify and assign weights to various human factors, such as personality traits and training history, which influence individuals’ susceptibility to phishing attacks. By leveraging this framework, modelers can run virtual cyber attack simulations with dynamically changing phishing susceptibility among the simulated end user agents. this enables the testing and evaluation of different cyber defense strategies in the context of realistic human behavior. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
