Accurate network simulations are critical for replicating real-world performance and guiding design decisions. Parameter calibration is needed to improve simulation accuracy, particularly with regards to End-to-End delay. Network simulation tools typically simplify or ignore processing delay, resulting in inaccurate results when considering this factor. We use a linear optimization approach to enhance simulation accuracy by incorporating processing delay as a key parameter. this adjustment reduces the discrepancy between simulation outcomes and real-world network behavior. However, even after calibration, certain models may still fail to fully capture the complexity of real-world networking devices. In such cases, developing a new model is necessary to better reflect device-specific characteristics. To demonstrate this, we present a case study highlighting the limitations of existing simulation models and validate the effectiveness of our proposed model in accurately replicating real network conditions, particularly in terms of End-to-End delay. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Large-scale hot-water underground tank and pit thermal energy storages have a high potential to massively increase the proportion of renewable energy in future local and district energy systems. To fully exploit the potential of these large-scale thermal energy storage (LTES) technologies, comprehensive planning and tuning of the overall system by dynamic system simulations is necessary. Modelica-based simulation tools show many advantages over other established system simulation tools. However, suitable LTES models in Modelica are limited or lack essential features. Consequently, it is the intention of this study to develop a novel Modelica LTES model. Existing models served as the basis for the development. A validation case study involving a real Danish pit storage was performed to assess the accuracy of the new model under real conditions. the results show that the new model adequately represents the physical behavior and interaction with the surrounding soil. this study is a first step towards more efficient modeling and simulation of LTES in dynamic system simulations in the future.

In collective biological systems, social contagion processes play an important role in evaluating and processing information on the level of the collective. these group-level abilities typically arise from individual-level mechanisms and through local interactions. We are interested in the role of these mechanisms and their effect on the system's response to environmental inputs. In this paper, we present a spatially embedded network model that is inspired by large fish shoals performing collective action in response to predation. We compare the observations of spatio-temporal dynamics in the model simulations with empirical observations, studying specifically the effect of spatial heterogeneities on system activity. the model demonstrates how already simple mechanisms suffice to represent key characteristics of the study system, and highlights the importance of taking into account the spatial embedding for understanding group-level processes in animal collectives.

A novel methodology of 3D CAE modeling of capillary underfill of multi-chip packages with a large number of micro bumps is employed in this study. the capillary underfill flow is mainly driven by the surface-tension force based on the contact angle between bumps and substrate. On the other hand, the propagation of the melt front is mainly dominated by the dispensing design of underfill and the distribution of micro bumps. For the simulation of dispensing behavior, 3D modeling is unavoidable. However, the computing cost will become unaffordable due to the number of bumps. To ease the computing cost, an equivalent technique -the Equivalent Bump Group (EBG) model is proposed to the simulation. A simple package is studied to validate the proposed methodology. the case shows that the modeling solution of melt front by EBG model has a good agreement to the detailed model by according dispensing passes. therefore, it is convinced that the proposed methodology provides a promising simulation solution for the microchip encapsulation for multi-chip packages with large number of micro bumps. A study for a multi-array package of different dispensing designs by EBG model is also conducted. the result shows that filling time can be predicted to get the best dispensing design with minimum filling time.

this study employs a modified formulation of the secon-dorder Drift-Diffusion model to investigate how the interaction between environmental and social cues influences individual decision-making in a binary choice scenario. Environmental information is represented as stochastic cues, often biased towards one of the choices, while social information is conveyed through signals from a group of identical agents making random decisions. the model incorporates simplified human perceptual characteristics via a visual network of social interactions, which considers perceptual limitations due to physical distances and visual occlusions. Model parameters and assumptions are informed by an ongoing behavioural experiment on behavioural contagion, conducted in human and artificial multi-agent systems using virtual reality. the stochastic evolution of decision states in response to environmental and social input mirrors the behavioural choices of human participants, who respond to stimuli presented in the virtual reality environment and social cues from a group of virtual agents. Manipulating the size and density of the group revealed that larger group sizes and lower densities lead to greater alignment of individual decisions with social cues, accompanied by shorter and more homogeneous response times and reduced accuracy. these findings afford preliminary insights into the behavioural experiment. With reciprocal informative exchange from experimental findings, this study would contribute to enhanced realism in future steps.

Designing optimal controllers still poses a challenge for modern Artificial Intelligence systems. Prior research has explored reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms for benchmarking the cart-pole control problem. However, there is still a lack of investigation of cognitive decision-making models and their ensemble with the RL techniques in the context of such dynamical control tasks. the primary objective of this paper is to implement a Deep Q-Network (DQN), Instance-based Learning (IBL), and an ensemble model of DQN and IBL for the cart-pole environment and compare these models’ ability to match human choices. Forty-two human participants were recruited to play the cart-pole game for ten training trials followed by a test trial, and the human experience information containing the situations, decisions taken, and the corresponding reward earned was recorded. the human experiences collected from the game-play were used to initialize the memory (buffer) for both the algorithms, DQN and IBL, rather than following the approach of learning from scratch through environmental interaction. the results indicated that the IBL algorithm initialized with human experience could be proposed as an alternative to the Q-learning initialized with human experience. It was also observed that the ensemble model could account for the human choices more accurately compared to the Q-learning and IBL models. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

this research utilizes statistical path modeling to examine the relationship between the number of Venezuelans migrating to Colombia due to economic collapse and the media's coverage of specific topics. We focus on media coverage expressing frustration regarding migration, infrastructure, government, and geopolitics. Our approach combines quantitative analysis of code frequencies from qualitative content analysis of 1,360 regional newspaper articles on migration-related issues. Our findings indicate that an increase in the Venezuelan population in Colombia leads to more negative media coverage of infrastructure impacts, such as hospitals and schools. this negative coverage, referred to as "frustration," indirectly contributes to increased coverage of infrastructure frustration. this suggests an opportunity for intervention by balancing media coverage to reduce the excessive use of negative language and stereotypes, potentially mitigating anti-migrant sentiment fueled by frustration towards infrastructure. Furthermore, we observe that as migration increases, coverage of frustration towards geopolitics decreases, while frustration towards the Colombian government rises. this shift may reflect a transition from contemplating the causes of migration to focusing on the humanitarian response (or lack thereof) by the host government in accommodating the new arrivals. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Cycloidal drives (CDs) are precision transmissions that are often installed in the joints of industrial robots (IRs) with high payloads. It is well known that the hysteresis behavior of the CDs has a significant influence on the dynamic path accuracy of IRs. In contrast to harmonic drives (HDs), which are commonly used in lightweight robots, less literature has been published on the dynamic behavior of robot joints with CDs. thus, this paper investigates the hysteresis behavior of robot joints with CDs. For the representation of the hysteresis behavior, a nonlinear auto-regressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) model is proposed and compared to a Bouc-Wen model. Both, the data-driven NARX and the Bouc-Wen model are investigated experimentally in terms of their capability for representing the hysteresis behavior of CDs. the quality of the models is validated using a laboratory setup that mimics the drivetrain of a robot joint of the high payload class.

Social recognition, the ability to differentiate between familiar and unfamiliar individuals, is crucial for animals' survival and reproduction. Neuroscience research has predominantly focused on investigating the brain regions and circuits that regulate social recognition. However, a lingering question pertains to the precise mechanisms underlying the social recognition process. To address this question, we employed a recurrent neural network (RNN) to determine whether an agent can recognize familiar individuals without involving higher-level decision-making processes. this approach takes into consideration that animal behavioral performance may not directly mirror complex cognitive functions. the RNN was trained using the full-FORCE learning paradigm. Our simulation results revealed three distinct subsets of neurons with specific functions: one dedicated to representing novel individuals and two others representing the same social individual in both unfamiliar and familiar states. We propose a hypothesis regarding the potential memory computing processes involved in these operations. © 2023 IEEE.

the automotive industry relies heavily on sheet metal forming processes for many components. Material data solely from uniaxial testing is insufficient to fully define the material behavior of the complex plastic deformation during numerical simulations of the forming processes. In-plane biaxial testing using a cruciform type specimen is a more comprehensive representation than the traditional uniaxial testing alone. Wide ranging biaxial stress states can be imposed by applying different loading conditions on each cruciform axis. However, this can create a challenge to achieve desired deformation paths due to the non-linear relationship between the control parameter, e.g., displacement, and the output of interest, e.g., strain path. In this paper, an interpolation method to develop the displacement control that produces a linear strain path with a desired strain ratio is revisited and expanded upon from the authors' previous work [1,2]. In the first iteration, linear biaxial displacements were applied to the specimen and the corresponding strain paths were obtained from the numerical simulations. the non-linear strain paths, due to geometry effects of the specimen, were used to reverse engineer a new displacement path that results in a linear strain path. Interpolation is revisited to show increased success with a second iteration. Analysis of the simulation results shows that linear strain paths of a given model can be determined and improved by successive iterations of interpolating the strain data from adjacent deformation paths.
