A key aspect of robotic assistants is their ability to contextualize their behavior according to different needs of assistive scenarios. this work presents an ontology-based knowledge representation and reasoning approach supporting the synthesis of personalized behavior of robotic assistants. It introduces an ontological model of health state and functioning of persons based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Moreover, it borrows the concepts of affordance and function from the literature of robotics and manufacturing and adapts them to robotic (physical and cognitive) assistance domain. Knowledge reasoning mechanisms are developed on top of the resulting ontological model to reason about stimulation capabilities of a robot and health state of a person in order to identify action opportunities and achieve personalized assistance. Experimental tests assess the performance of the proposed approach and its capability of dealing with different profiles and stimuli.

this paper explores resource allocation in server-less cloud computing platforms and proposes an optimization approach for autoscaling systems. Serverless computing relieves users from resource management tasks, enabling focus on application functions. However, dynamic resource allocation and function replication based on changing loads remain crucial. Typically, autoscalers in these platforms utilize threshold-based mechanisms to adjust function replicas independently. We model applications as interconnected graphs of functions, where requests probabilistically traverse the graph, triggering associated function execution. Our objective is to develop a control policy that optimally allocates resources on servers, minimizing failed requests and response time in reaction to load changes. Using a fluid approximation model and Separated Continuous Linear Programming (SCLP), we derive an optimal control policy that determines the number of resources per replica and the required number of replicas over time. We evaluate our approach using a simulation framework built with Python and simpy. Comparing against threshold-based autoscaling, our approach demonstrates significant improvements in average response times and failed requests, ranging from 15% to over 300% in most cases. We also explore the impact of system and workload parameters on performance, providing insights into the behavior of our optimization approach under different conditions. Overall, our study contributes to advancing resource allocation strategies, enhancing efficiency and reliability in serverless cloud computing platforms.

A Fuzzy Rule Interpolation-based (FRI) fuzzy automaton for controlling a football match simulation is going to be introduced in this paper. Controlling the agents (football players) of the simulation is realized by evaluating such fuzzy rule-bases, which contain only the cardinal rules able to make the system work, keeping the rule-bases as small as possible (forming so called sparse rule-bases). Classical fuzzy inference methods require complete rule-bases by design and cannot handle these kinds of sparse rule-bases. However, using sparse rule-bases to control the agents becomes possible by applying FRI. the goal of this work was to construct such a model, which employs a human-readable knowledge representation to control the agents in a football simulation. For this purpose, the application of sparse fuzzy rule-bases is well suited, as these are self-describing by their nature. An example application was also developed alongside the fuzzy automaton-based model, which is able to perform and show a lifelike football match simulation in real-time. Hence the presented model can be adapted to real robot hardware and also can be used as a reference model for fuzzy logic based machine learning methods.

Environmental and economical constraints lead to designing more and more complex systems. To face these issues, Model Based System Engineering proposes an approach based on an interconnected multi point of view system modeling. Each representation of the system has a different abstraction level that is valuable at different stages of the system design and suits its own objectives respectively: 1) purposes and global constraints definition, 2) architecture choices, components sizing and strategies testing, 3) accurate simulation results on various scenarios. Interconnections between the different levels have two objectives: on one hand be able to define the requirements of a lower level using higher level information and on the other hand send back simulation variable values from a lower level to evaluate the higher level requirements satisfaction. Resource management is carried out through a functional model, which is a macroscopic and low-complexity model of the system providing fast simulation results. In this paper, this multi-level methodology is applied to the thermal system management of an electric vehicle in order to optimize its resource management. the different levels design and the development of their interconnections are detailed.

the ability to respond to the needs of an individual operator is key for cognitive assistance in naturalistic settings. In order to keep track of changing operator demands in dynamic situations, a model-based approach for cognitive assistance is proposed. Based on model tracing with flight deck interactions and EEG recordings, the model is able to represent individual pilots' behavior in response to flight deck alerts. As a first application of the concept, an ACT-R cognitive model is created using data from an empirical flight simulator study on neurophysiological signals of missed acoustic alerts. Results show that uncertainty of individual behavior representation can be significantly reduced by the combination of cognitive modeling and EEG data. Implications for model-based cognitive assistance in flight deck operations are discussed. © ICCM *** rights reserved.

In this paper, we are interested to the dynamic modeling of lithium-ion battery behavior as the mathematical modeling of the battery is essential for a better understanding of the characteristics, the performance evaluation and therefore battery sizing and optimization. the dynamic model is a phenomenological model based on an equivalent circuit model. In order to investigate the electrical output characteristics of the concerned lithium-ion battery and validate the conceived model, the presented model is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink. Dynamic simulations are carried out, including the observation of the changes in battery terminal output voltage under different charging/discharging modes and cycling conditions. the simulation results are compared with the results obtained from several recent studies and to manufacturer data.

the threat of malicious actions by trusted insiders is a difficult issue to predict and combat. this paper presents an agent-based model that simulates a way in which social interventions can curb or eliminate the occurrence of malicious insider attacks, or "insider threats", within an organization. there are several precursors to an individual taking malicious action against an organization. One such factor, social isolation from one’s peers, may lend itself to proactive remediation techniques. Here we attempt to model the occurrence of malicious insider attacks for which social isolation is a precursor, then demonstrate the effects of social interventions on the emergence of such behavior. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A well-known method for optimization of dynamic behavior of industrial robots is through applying magneto-rheological dampers in robots joints. In this paper, a new mathematical (virtual) model of a magneto-rheological damper for optimizing the dynamic behavior of robots is proposed which closely simulates a real damper, as validated by experimental research. the investigated dynamic behavior parameters include viscose global dynamic damper coefficient (VGDDC), viscose global dynamic damper equivalent coefficient (VGDDEC), global dynamic transmissibility (GDT), and global dynamic compliance (GDC). the effect of these parameters on the magneto-rheological damper is analyzed on an arm-type robot and compared to no magneto-rheological damping situation. the experimental setting of the damping force versus the intensity of the magnetic field and methods to optimize the dynamic behavior are also shown. the mathematical matrix-vector model for dynamic behavior analysis of the IR is presented with the viscous friction force, depending on the intensity of the applied electrical field, the force determining the online control of the variation of torque, and the Fourier vibration spectrum. through new multi-parameter equations, the pattern adjustment operation to the real model becomes very simple and accurate.

Mesa is an agent-based modeling framework written in Python. Originally started in 2013, it was created to be the go-to tool in for researchers wishing to build agent-based models with Python. Within this paper we present Mesa’s design goals, along with its underlying architecture. this includes its core components: 1) the model (Model, Agent, Schedule, and Space), 2) analysis (Data Collector and Batch Runner) and the visualization (Visualization Server and Visualization Browser Page). We then discuss how agent-based models can be created in Mesa. this is followed by a discussion of applications and extensions by other researchers to demonstrate how Mesa design is decoupled and extensible and thus creating the opportunity for a larger decentralized ecosystem of packages that people can share and reuse for their own needs. Finally, the paper concludes with a summary and discussion of future development areas for Mesa. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Most presently considered HVDC circuit breakers make use of series air-core inductors to limit the rate-of-rise of the DC-side fault current. the inductors are also useful for identifying whether a fault is on the line to be protected or not, as they form a filter for wave-fronts originating from external faults. In DC-side fault studies, they are predominantly represented by their (lumped) inductance, thereby neglecting resonance effects due to stray capacitances, whose effect is within this context as yet not investigated. To fill this gap, this paper documents the resonance behavior of air-core inductors and the effect of including this behavior in DC-side fault studies. the paper furthermore compares results as obtained with EMT-type simulation software with those obtained with the Numerical Inverse Laplace Transform (NILT). Including the resonance effect is found to be more important for overhead line than in cable systems, and attention needs to be paid to the choice of simulation time step in EMT-type software.
