object-oriented design and modeling with UML has become a central part of software development in industry. Software inspections are used to cost-efficiently increase the quality of the developed software by early defect detection and correction. Several models presenting the total system need to be inspected for consistency with each other and with external documents such as requirement specifications. Special object oriented Reading Techniques (OORTs) have been developed to help inspectors in the individual reading step of inspection of UML models. the paper describes an experiment performed at Ericsson in Norway to evaluate the cost-efficiency of tailored OORTs in a large-scale software project. the results showed that the OORTs fit well into an incremental development process, and managed to detect defects not found by the existing reading techniques. the study demonstrated the need for further development and empirical assessment of these techniques, and for better integration with industrial work practice. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Regular types have been proposed as a foundation for statically typed processing of XML and other forms of tree-structured data. To date, however, regular types have only been explored in specialpurpose languages (e.g., XDuce, CDuce, and XQuery) with type systems designed around regular types "from the ground up." the goal of the Xtatic language is to bring regular types to a broad audience by offering them as a lightweight extension of a popular object-oriented language, C#. We develop here the formal core of the Xtatic design—a combination of the tree-structured data model of XDuce and the classes-and-objects data model of a conventional object-oriented language. Our tool for this investigation is a tiny language called FX with features drawn from Featherweight Java (FJ) and from the core of XDuce. Points of interest include (1) a smooth interleaving of the two data models, in which XDuce’s tree structures are grafted into of FJ’s class hierarchy while objects and object types play the role of XDuce’s label values and label types;(2) an intuitive "semantic" definition of the subtype relation, inherited from XDuce and extended to objects;and (3) a natural encoding of XML documents and their schemas using a simple form of singleton classes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

C++ object layout schemes rely on (sometimes numerous) compiler generated fields. We describe a new language-independent object layout scheme, which is space optimal, i.e., objects are contiguous, and contain no compiler generated fields other than a single type identifier. As in C++ and other multiple inheritance languages such as Cecil and Dylan, the new scheme sometimes requires extra levels of indirection to access some of the fields. Using a data set of 28 hierarchies, totalling almost 50,000 types, we show that the new scheme improves field access efficiency over standard implementations, and competes favorably with (the non-space optimal) highly optimized C++ specific implementations. the benchmark includes a new analytical model for computing the frequency of indirections in a sequence of field access operations. Our layout scheme relies on whole-program analysis, which requires about 10 microseconds per type on a contemporary architecture (Pentium III, 900Mhz, 256MB machine), even in very large hierarchies. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

A service definition is an abstract specification of the behavior of a software component. It provides the interface between the users of an object and its (hidden) implementation. A protocol can be a part of a service, definition. It captures the conditions under which interface operations can be invoked. this is of use for the designers of clients, but also for implementers of the service, at least if the protocol mechanism provides automatic (static or dynamic) acceptability checking of invocations or messages. Existing protocol formalisms are mostly based on finite state machines that describe legal orderings of messages. this is too limited, however, to model more complex services or to handle conditions that go beyond the ordering (such as access-control or time-dependencies) without referring to a service implementation. In this paper we explore a grammar-based approach to protocol definition, i.e. we define protocols as non-deterministic grammars extended with provisions for parallellism. the resulting protocols not only define legal message sequences but can also impose context-sensitive constraints on properties of messages, like its sender or a time stamp. Protocotols are truly abstract, i.e, independent of the implementation of a service. Since we want to investigate the kinds of constructs needed in specifying protocols we do not introduce a new notation, but instead express protocols as parsers written in a lazy functional language using a technique called combinator parsing. Besides giving a complete picture of the semantics of the constructs this also allows us to show how dynamic protocol checking can be provided. the approach is illustrated through several examples and its potential and limitations are discussed.

the paper addresses the issue of device management system design for software agents compliant with IEEE 1073 device communication standard. Based on middleware architecture the device control layer represents a universal versatile object-oriented application-programming interface. the approach presented in the paper allows to implement plug-and-play integration and interoperability of medical acquisition devices within the medical device system be means of common middleware services. Adherence to Medical Data Information Base nomenclature, component part of IEEE 1073 communication standard, adds necessary consistency to presented component-based infrastructure.

this paper presents an imperative object calculus designed to support class-based programming via a combination of extensible objects and encapsulation. this calculus simplifies the language presented in [17] in that, like C++ and Java, it chooses to support an imperative semantics instead of method specialization. We show how Java-style classes and "mixins" may be coded in this calculus, prove a type soundness theorem (via a subject reduction property), and give a sound and complete typing algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

Previous workshops related to aspect oriented software development, reflection organized at previous ecoop conferences (e.g., RMA'00(1).and AOM-MeT'01(2).) and conferences on the same topics (Reflection'01 and AOSD since 2002) have pointed out the growing interest on these topics and their relevance in the software evolution as techniques for code instrumentation. Very similar conclusions can be drawn by reading the contributions to the workshops on unanticipated software evolution (USE 2002 and USE 2003(3).). Following the example provided by these venues, the RAM-SE (Reflection, AOP and Meta-Data for Software Evolution) workshop has provided an opportunity for researchers with a broad range of interests in reflective techniques and aspect-oriented software development to discuss recent developments of such a techniques in application to the software evolution. the workshop main goal was to encourage people to present works in progress. these works could cover all the spectrum from theory to practice. To ensure creativity, originality, and audience interests, participants have been selected by the workshop organizers on the basis of 5-page position paper. We hope that the workshop will help them to mature their ideas and to improve the quality of their future publications based on the presented work. the workshop proceedings are available as research report C-186 of the Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences of the Tokyo Institute of Technology and freely downlodable from the workshop web site(4).

Lack of awareness about the potentials of agent technology, as well as concerns regarding stability, scalability, and survivability especially in unpredictable environments of attacks and system failures are identified as major reasons for missing trust in the idea of delegating tasks to autonomous agents. therefore, one of the key research issues is how the quality of Multi-Agent Systems can be assured, while at the same time reducing the development efforts to enhance the acceptance of agent technology in the industry. In order to ensure the industrial relevance, we focus on development of methods and techniques for the evaluation and tests of agent-based control applications. Our research covers the development of demonstration framework, including pilot implementations in industrial-like settings.

object oriented programming languages have raised the level of abstraction by supporting the object querying on collections. programming languages can execute first class query constructs, using query optimization techniques from the database field, for run time optimizations. Existing approaches, however, such as Java Query Language (JQL), which executes such query constructs on collections have high run time overhead. therefore, we propose an approach to reduce the burden of run time overhead by performing most of the query optimization for object queries on collections at compile time. this approach both analyzes the source code and obtains the metadata provided through annotations. It relies on building histograms from the metadata information. then, the predicate and join selectivity estimates within a query are computed from these histograms. the selectivity estimates are maintained accurate with the incremental maintenance of histograms to the data changes in the program at run time. Next, both the selection and join optimizations are applied on the queries. the optimizations help in skipping and eliminating the execution of some of the predicates and joins based on the collected metadata. Finally, a query plan is generated at the compile time through the proposed selectivity cost heuristic. the query itself is executed at run time according to the determined query plan. But, in cases of inaccurate metadata and significant data changes in the source code, the query plan is modified at run time according to the correct selectivity estimates obtained from the updated histograms. Our experimental results demonstrate that our approach reduces the run time overhead of a program with collections more than the earlier approaches such as JQL.

While many books have been published on object-oriented programming and design, little has been said about the overall development process. In parallel, evolutionary and participatory strategies have been discussed and used for years with variing success. We claim that combining object-oriented development with an evolutionary strategy which we call an application-oriented approach, will yield synergetic effects leading to a higher level of software quality, usability and system acceptance. this paper describes the various ingredients of our approach which are unified under a common leitmotif with matching design metaphors. A series of major industrial software projects serves as example and practical proof of the approach. We report about documents that have been produced and used within these projects and about the technical construction of the applications. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.
