Content Based image Retrieval (CBIR) systems enables to retrieve images from large image archieves based on its contents as well as external attributes associated to each image. this study aims at extracting low level attributes to be used in a CBIR model that enables the utilization of low level image based attributes together with high level concepts. the contribution of this study is to develop an infrastructure for the selection of best low level attribute set to be used in the CBIR method by considering model performance. Within the scope of this study: segmentation of mammogram images, development of a mammogram database, low level attribute extraction from the segmented images and breast type estimation by means of machine learning algorithms are realized. ©2009 IEEE.

A variety of free, open source GIS tools is now available for geo-related processing. the Web processing Service (WPS) uses Web Service technology for spatial calculations or easy access to models on the Internet in contrast to traditional geospatial processing, which is standalone, inefficient and often requires purchase of expensive software. A number of standards-compliant geospatial Web services have been developed using Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) functions to manipulate rasters and vectors, and to process satellite image data. the paper adopts the WPS mechanism to expose the existing geospatial processing algorithms in the Web services as the interoperable WPS processes. A 52 North WPS following the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standard is used supports the server. the key problem is that the version used with GRASS is incompatible with the version used with WPS. the way to address this challenge is to convert the data structure from WPS XML data input to an intermediate format compatible with GRASS. An open source Geo Tools Feature Model would be a major undertaking. Two typical geospatial processes from the WPS would be invoked to handle geospatial data from Web Coverage Service (WCS) and Web Feature Service (WFS). these two cases illustrate that the WPS-enabled algorithm is easily accessed and easily integrated into scientific workflow systems in geospatial modeling. the biggest advantage of is its extremely high efficiency and low cost.

In many signal processing applications such as image analysis or spectral decomposition, non-negativity constrains are necessary to provide a physical reasonable interpretation. this constraint is exploited by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) methods. the goal of NMF is to find low rank matrices A ≥ 0 and B ≥ 0 such that the positive data matrix X can be approximated by AB ≈ X. Most algorithms for this type of factorization are discrete-step iterative optimization procedures based on gradient descent or QuasiNewton methods. Here we propose a continuous-time version of NMF based on dynamical systems with positive solutions, which allows time-dependent cost functions, e.g. due to time-dependent data. © EURASIP, 2009.

In this paper, a recursive fuzzy inference system that can be applied to estimate the error probability of tracking algorithms used in medical image processing systems is proposed. Specifically, we are interested in the fiber bundles estimation process {fiber tracking) in diffusion tensor (DT) fields acquired via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As tracking algorithm we consider a previously developed probabilistic tracking algorithm (PTA). this paper studies the analogies between this tracking approach and a typical Multiple Hypotheses Tracing (MHT) system, which is closely related to fuzzy systems. this comparison leads to the development of a SAM (Standard Additive Model) fuzzy system that on-line provides the uncertainty of the decisions about the estimated fiber tracts. Experiments on both simulated and real DT-MR images demonstrate the validity of the method.

there is a dearth of software tools that allow users to easily visualize, analyze and mine satellite imagery. the few tools that are available are expensive commercial packages that provide limited functionality. As part of a NASA funded project, a software tool named GLIDER is currently being developed to fill this void. GLIDER allows users to visualize and analyze satellite data in its native sensor view. Users can enhance the image by applying different image processing algorithms on the data. GLIDER provides the users with a full suite of pattern recognition and data mining algorithms that can be applied to the satellite imagery to extract thematic information. the suite of algorithms includes both supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms. In addition, users can project satellite imagery and analysis/mining results onto a 3D globe for visualization. GLIDER also allows users to add additional layers to the globe along with the projected image. Users can open multiple views within GLIDER to manage, visualize and analyze many data files all at once.

Recent years HOG algorithm has been used to recognize objects in images, with complex content, with a very high success rate. Hardware implementation of this algorithm is very important because of the fact that it can be used in many object recognition applications. In this work HOG algorithm is implemented on FPGA to recognize different geometrical figures with a very high success rate. Objects vertical and horizontal edges have been sharpened using edge detection algorithms to calculate magnitude and angle of the local gradients. Obtained result are used to construct the histograms of gradient orientation. It is observed that each constructed histogram have distinctive features for every object. Rule based classifiers has been used to implement a successful real time object recognition approach on embedded system.

Systolic algorithms and architectures for high-throughput processing applications

In this paper we survey a number of linear algebra algorithms that are used in many modern real-time high-throughput applications. We focus in particular on algorithms that are used in applications as diverse as adaptive filtering/beamforming, communications, signal/array processing, control, etc. We first consider least-squares estimation, QR decomposition, singular value decomposition, recursive least-squares estimation, and Kalman filtering algorithms. In particular, the QR decomposition which is used in least-squares solutions of linear system of equations, also forms one component of more complex algorithms such as Kalman filtering and the singular value decomposition. Systolic arrays, due to their modularity and regularity, are perfect matches for all the algorithms considered in this paper. All these problems are defined and described alongside the systolic algorithms and the architectures that implement them.
