In scientific visualization, data are becoming more and more important and usually implies a cooperative effort. Moreover experts are usually geographically distributed, therefore they need collaborative tools to work efficiently. To solve this limitation, a prospective action has been recently initiated, with the development of a web based application for collaborative interaction based on two innovating technologies: webGL and webSocket. To demonstrate this approach, a prototype has been developed based on the Visible Patient project. In this paper we present the architecture of the proposed system, the initial implementation experiment and a comparison with current technologies. Finally we discuss the future work and potential improvements.

We present a 3d container model that enables the compositing of 3d file formats. It allows not only to compose 3d scenes made of several 3d files of different types but also to combine their functionalities and to make them interact together in the rendering window. this model, called 3dFC for 3d File Container, relies on the Scene Graph Adapter (SGA) architecture that makes it possible to load any scene-graph-based 3d file format in a 3d application whatever the involved engines (rendering engine, physics engine, etc.). this paper describes the 3dFC model, its integration with the SGA architecture and gives an implementation example. In this example we define a scene composed of an X3d file and a Collada file and we make their content interact in a 3d application that relies on Ogre 3d and Bullet.

Virtual Reality procedure training simulators require that users perform actions in a specific order during the procedure. Recent advances in 3d web technologies, such as web3d, HTML5 and webGL, have allowed complex 3d scenes to be rendered interactively, within a web browser. However, designing and implementing a complete VR procedure training application using these standards is complex and not straightforward. In this paper we present X3d nodes that overcome these limitations and allow procedure training scenarios to be described within X3d. Moreover, using X3dOM to implement these nodes allows training scenarios to run within any standard web browser, without the need to install additional plugins. In particular, we propose three new nodes. these nodes define additional layers that allow relationships and dependencies between geometric entities to be created. they provide the necessary means to develop VR procedure training simulators using X3d. Finally, we have developed a training application targeted at maintenance of hydro-electrical power plants using Petri-nets to validate our proposal. © 2012 ACM.

We present an improved version of the CommonSurfaceShader node, a modern declarative surface shader for X3d. the new version is better suited for physically-based rendering, has support for anisotropic surfaces, and overcomes some of the limitations the original design had for layered materials. We also present a general discussion of how the node performed in practice.

the maintenance of assets in a large 3d scene can involve many authors with potentially different skills and different modeling tools. the standard paradigm of collaborative editing is sharing of files between various instances of applications. this presents problems, not limited to maintaining consistency of the models and dealing with concurrent edits in the same part of a scene. In this paper, we present a novel framework for non-linear revision control and online distribution of 3d assets. this framework supports concurrent asynchronous 3d editing of models and tracking of multiple revisions so that they can be integrated at a later date. It thus provides similar functionality to file-based revision control systems, but is built around a NoSQL database, hence avoids the constraints of file based storage. the framework supports distributed editing over the Internet and additional lightweight clients in web-browsers with webGL support.

We propose a web-accessible image visualization and processing framework well-suited for medical applications. Exploiting client-side HTML5 and webGL technologies, our proposal allows the end-user to efficiently browse and visualize volumic images in an Out-Of-Core (OOC) manner, annotate and apply server-side image processing algorithms and interactively visualize 3d medical models. Server-side implementation is driven by a file-based, simple, robust and flexible Remote Procedure Call (RPC) scheme well suited for heterogeneous applications. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach with both an interactive medical image segmentation and a 3d rendering of segmented anatomical structures. As a secondary contribution, we improve the segmentation algorithm with the introduction of user-defined anatomical priors.

X3d has been evolving for nearly 20 years (counting the VRML era). this long period, covering a wide range of uses (Computer Aided design, medical, Geographic Information System...) has led to a lot of possibly inconsistent or even conflicting features. By reasoning on the X3d data model, it is possible to detect such issues, list them and propose solutions. In order to allow such a study of the model, we propose a conversion of the current XML schema to an ontology and then a systematic detection of possible issues. We then categorize them and propose solutions to fix them.

Current consumer hardware has become quite powerful. Off-the-shelf computers are today capable of displaying 3d in realtime. With the advent of the Apple iPhone and the Smartphone revolution, mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous, yet they are equipped with graphic hardware that is rivaling dedicated gaming devices like the Nintendo dS in terms of 3d performance. With the release of the version 1.0 of the webGL specification a mature API for 3d graphics in web browsers has been established by the Kronos Group. webGL provides native, hardware-accelerated support for 3d graphics in current versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Opera. Today's products always involve 3d data. Either the raw CAd/CAM data is used to actually manufacture products or 3d models are used to aid the design process. this data is very often involved and utilized in digital content creation (dCC) pipelines, that leverage the data to enable further 3d applications, such as product presentation or visualization. this paper analyzes existing dCC pipelines and proposes a web-based solution to adapt existing 3d applications to native 3d web applications. the web-based dCC pipeline is built upon web standards, such as webGL and X3d.

in traditional software engineering domains, Model-driven development (Mdd) using UML or domain-specific languages (dSL) is successfully established. Although Mdd is a particularly promising approach to avoid implementation errors due to miscommunication between heterogenous developer groups, only a few Mdd approaches for 3d-development have been proposed so far. In this paper, we describe how one such Mdd approach, SSIML, can be extended to a full round-trip engineering approach to structured 3d development. Round-trip engineering combines a forward phase, where code is automatically generated from an abstract model of the application, with a reverse phase, where manual code edits are merged back into the abstract model. the proposed approach is demonstrated with the development of 3l) web applications based on X3d/X3dOM and JavaScript.
