JSON, XML-based 3d formats (e.g. X3d or Collada) and declarative 3d approaches share some benefits but also one major drawback: all encoding schemes store the scene-graph and vertex data in the same file structure;unstructured raw mesh data is found within descriptive elements of the scene. web Browsers therefore have to download all elements (including every single coordinate) before being able to further process the structure of the document. therefore, we separate the structured scene information and unstructured vertex data to increase the user experience and overall performance of the system by introducing two new referenced containers, which encode external mesh data as so-called Sequential Image Geometry (SIG) or Typed-Array-based Binary Geometry (BG). We also discuss compression, rendering and application results and introduce a novel data layout for image geometry data that supports incremental updates, arbitrary input meshes and GPU decoding.

Virtual reality commer1ce (VR-commerce) is a potential candidate for a wide adoption of the next wave of the e-commerce platform, since its advantages and novel shopping experience derived from the VR interface. Currently, platform dependence and downloading and installing a huge virtual world before cruising into the VR-store are examples among many cumbersome shoppers facing in using such platform. webGL is a front runner for implementing this kind of innovative shopping experience, which just enters its matured phase. this study is the first implementation of a full-scale virtual reality store by X3d. It focused on the technical feasibility aspects of implementing a virtual reality book store by the X3d and webGL standard.

With the development of computer technologies, 3d technology and applications become more and more important. In order to enhance user's 3d experience, web3d technology provides the way to embed interactive 3d content into web pages. Some open standards of web3d technology (VRML and X3d) are given but they cannot meet the increasing application need, so many companies built their own web3d implementations. However, the variety of these implementations makes developers difficult to decide which one should be chosen. In this paper, according to analyzing several popular web3d tools and measure their application features, some quantities indicators of several web3d tools are given. they provide the decision method to help web3d developers easier for their development. At last, according to the comparison, we build a virtual prototype apartment to introduce the estate use of web3d technology. © 2012 IEEE.

In the last years, Geographic Information technologies have reached a mature state, providing a platform to support interoperability among different providers and users through Spatial data Infrastructures (SdI). However, Civil Protection applications have specific requirements that make them different from typical Earth System Sciences research applications. Currently SdIs and the ESdI (European Spatial data Infrastructure) only partially address user needs as they offer no or very limited time variable management. the main objective of the work presented here, which presents the achievements of the EU project BRISEIdE, was to develop a complete software architecture in that could provide the user with the possibility to interact with geographic spatio-temporal information through a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). the challenge is to define a complex architecture, which is able to provide several kinds of geographic services (images, multidimensional raster data, sensor information, features and processing features) in a unique 2d/3d environment allowing the user to easily interact with the web services and functions. the deployed services enable sharing of geospatial information even with temporal dimension, a fundamental requirement for Civil Protection applications. the services are accessible through a multi-platform 3d client, developed during the project, which also allows interactive orchestration of spatio-temporal WPSs (web Processing Services) by providing support to chaining of required processing units.

With the appearance of natural interaction devices such as the Microsoft Kinect or Asus Xtion PRO cameras, a whole new range of interaction modes have been opened up to developers. Tracking frameworks can make use of the additional depth image or skeleton tracking capabilities to recognize gestures. A popular example of one such implementation is the NITE framework from PrimeSense, which enables fine grained gesture recognition. However, recognized gestures come with additional information such as velocity, angle or accuracy, which are not encapsulated in a standardized format and therefore cannot be integrated into X3d in a meaningful way. In this paper, we propose a flexible way to inject gesture based meta data into X3d applications to enable fine grained interaction. We also discuss how to recognize these gestures if the underlying framework provides no mechanism to do so.

the application needs in 3d visualization culminate today, in particular in the field of geographic information systems (GIS), as evidenced by the popularity of applications like Google Earth or Google Map. Meanwhile, the popular success of mobile devices like smartphones or tablets and the explosion of cloud computing directly related to ubiquitous networks accelerates the gradual shift from the traditional desktop application development to web and specialized mobile application development. But if the latest technologies centered around HTML5 facilitate the development of rich internet applications (RIA), the gap in resources between a desktop computer and a smartphone requires still an important conceptual and algorithmic work when one aims to design web applications offering a user experience similar to desktop applications. In this paper, we propose a method of terrain simplification suitable for data compression and streaming, and therefore ideal for the GIS visualization in a web browser. Based on new parallel algorithms, this method was designed to exploit the multi-core architectures of the latest CPU and GPU, within the constraints of the latest HTML5 API (webGL, webSockets, webCL). It offers the main advantage of working on irregular grids, which allows to modelize highly nonuniform terrains (containing for instance roads and buildings) that may be unprojectable (plain 3d and not only 2.5d).

the World Wide web allows users to create and publish a variety of resources, including multimedia ones. Most of the contemporary best practices for designing web interfaces, however, do not take into account the 3d techniques. In this paper we present a novel approach for designing interactive web applications-2-Layer Interface Paradigm (2LIP). the background layer of the 2LIP-type user interface is a 3d scene, which a user cannot directly interact with. the foreground layer is HTML content. Only taking an action on this content (e.g. pressing a hyperlink, scrolling a page) can affect the 3d scene. We introduce a reference implementation of 2LIP: Copernicus - the Virtual 3d Encyclopedia, which shows one of the potential paths of the evolution of Wikipedia towards web 3.0. Based on the evaluation of Copernicus we prove that designing web interfaces according to 2LIP provides users a better browsing experience, without harming the interaction.

Complex material-light interaction is modeled mathematically in its most basic form through the 4d BRdF or the 6d spatially varying BRdF. To alleviate the overhead of calculating correct shading with a complex BRdF consisting of many parameters, many methods resort to textures as containers for BRdF information. the most common among them is the Bidirectional Texture Function, where a set of base textures of the material under different illumination and viewing conditions is stored and used as a lookup table at runtime. A wide variety of compression algorithms have been proposed, which usually differ only in some basis notation. Also, several other schemes aside from the BTF exist that make use of multiple textures as containers for surface appearance data, which either compress the surface transfer function or the response in change of luminance with a suitable basis function. We propose a common container for image-based material descriptors, the ImageMaterial node for X3d, with a common interface to unify these different implementations and make them accessible to the X3d developer. We also introduce a new texturing node, the PolynomialTextureMap, which can display Polynomial Texture Map binary container as regular static texture or work in conjunction with an ImageMaterial appearance to unfold its full potential.

the recent years have witnessed a rapid development in virtual reality technology and computer aided design, which accompanied by a vast amount of 3d content springing up from various domains, has given rise to an emerging need for methods by which they can be efficiently annotated before being searched and retrieved. In this paper a new approach to semantic annotation on 3d content is proposed. In this approach, much of the manual work on annotation is replaced with a semi-automatic process based on prior gathering of domain expertise. the geometric properties of objects and their spatial relationships are first automatically extracted and associated with a general ontology, the result of which is then matched against a set of user-defined rules to create annotations represented in an application ontology. the approach is web3d oriented so that it can take advantage of features of X3d format. It will be shown using a prototype system how this approach can succeed in accelerating the annotation process.

the 3d printing is an emerging technology whose principle is to deposit material in thin layers until the piece takes on the projected shape. 3d printing has the potential to change society as well as some scientific fields. Hence, considering this last aspect, the present paper aims to map the most prevalent research areas in 3d printing domain during the 1983-2017 period analyzed. A total of 119,800 documents on 3d printing were collected from web of Science and Scopus. Results show that the number of documents on 3d printing increased 13.65%, when considering Scopus and web of Science together. the areas with the highest ratio of 3d printing documents are engineering, computing and materials science. the analysis of keywords co-occurrence and field trends of magazines and conferences revealed also a close linkage between 3d printing and health sciences, where the concepts of bio-ink, bioprint and bioplotter are introduced. these results reinforce the role of 3d printing as a research domain that is been structured upon different areas.
