Although most reflecting intelligent surface (RIS) modeling techniques do not consider the electromagnetic polarization and coupling effects between unit cell elements in wireless communication, those two physical parameters play a critical role in the near-field communication of the simultaneous transmit and receive – reflecting intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) system. therefore, this work presents a study on the impact of mutual coupling and polarization in a RIS-aided STAR system, which also considers the orientation of the RIS to capture the impact of electromagnetic polarization. the simultaneous transmit and receive antenna is designed using the offset pin technique and operates at 2.464 GHz. the RIS is designed using a square patch with the same substrate used in the antenna. the finite element-based full-wave electromagnetic study shows that when the parallel and inclined RIS interacts with the spherical wavefront in the antenna’s near-field, it significantly affects mutual coupling and the realized gain pattern.

this paper introduces a novel hybrid visible light communication (VLC)/ intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided radio-frequency (RF) communication system tailored for indoor communication scenarios. the system uniquely combines a primary VLC link with an IRS-assisted RF backup link to enhance the reliability and coverage. We analyze the performance of the proposed system by deriving the closed-form expressions for outage probability and outage capacity considering a hard-switching scheme. Specifically, the system maintains transmission over the VLC channel until the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) falls below the threshold, at which point it seamlessly transition to the multiple IRS-aided RF system. We utilize Nakagami-m fading to characterize the RF link and Lambertian radiation emission pattern to model the VLC link, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the system performance. the derived analytical expressions are validated through extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. the performance comparison confirms the efficiency of the proposed hybrid system, illustrating significant reliability improvements over the traditional VLC system.

Pulmonary diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), Asthma, and Pneumonia present significant global health challenges, necessitating early and accurate diagnosis for improved outcomes. Traditional diagnostic methods, including spirometry and chest X-rays, are often costly, inaccessible in remote areas, and unsuitable for real-time monitoring. this paper proposes a novel, non-invasive sensing approach using mmWave radar (IWR1843) for pulmonary disease identification. the radar system captures subtle thoracic movements, enabling the analysis of respiratory patterns and vital signs such as respiratory rate, phase variations, and vibration-based chest motion. the proposed system was evaluated across COPD and normal subjects, demonstrating its capability to differentiate between these conditions based on respiratory parameters. this solution offers significant advantages, including cost-effectiveness, portability, and accessibility, making it suitable for clinical and remote settings. With the ability to provide real-time, detailed respiratory insights, this approach holds great promise for widespread deployment in pulmonary disease diagnosis and monitoring.

Underwater visible light communication (UVLC) offers high-speed data transmission but faces challenges like path loss, turbulence, pointing error and power constraints from internet of things (IoT) nodes. this paper introduces a partitioned intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) for energy harvesting (EH) and data transmission (DT) to tackle these challenges in an UVLC system. this dual-purpose IRS enhances system metrics like outage probability, ergodic rate and harvested energy. By using IRS for data transmission as well as EH to power the sensor node, this approach extends operational lifespan of the sensor node without frequent recharging. Closed-form mathematical expressions are derived for outage probability (OP) and ergodic rate (ER). this novel IRS-EH integration fills a research gap, improving coverage and signal reliability in underwater environments, and is validated through Monte Carlo simulations.

Autonomous driving systems utilize machine learning models to identify the right strategy to control vehicles. Since these systems are safety-critical, high accuracy, especially in complex scenarios, is increasingly ensured by designing larger machine learning (ML) models that require higher execution time and memory. Such larger ML models are challenging to process on onboard systems, as specialized processors with large memories tend to be expensive. One possibility of utilizing such large ML models is to leverage cloud computing in real time. However, cloud services can only be accessed using the wireless network, which can vary depending on the location and network congestion. In this work, we design a system that adapts to such dynamic network conditions, where the amount of data sent depends on the available network bandwidth. this adaptation technique (i) tunes the quality of the sensor data and (ii) depends more on the LIDAR data for local processing when the network fails. Our system caches additional data, such as HD maps, from the cloud whenever it predicts that the network bandwidth is about to reduce. Our preliminary results using an existing autonomous driving simulator called Carla shows that our technique is effective in practice.

the rapid increase in mobile data traffic, the growing number of connected devices, and the variety of applications are creating significant demands on the core networks of 5G and beyond (5GB). While 5G and 5GB technologies are effectively meeting these demands through strategies like network slicing, they also introduce vulnerabilities to specific attacks, such as session mirroring and resource overallocation, which arise when core functions like the SMF (Session Management Function) are compromised. these attacks can deplete network resources, resulting in Denial of Service (DoS). In this work, we address these attacks by analyzing their impact using various traffic metrics. We propose an anomaly detection approach based on Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM), which can effectively manage real-time traffic anomalies by leveraging previous learning states. Compared to other neural network models (Recurrent Neural Network, Long Short Term Memory, Multi-Layer Perception), our results show that the HTM-based detection method delivers superior performance in real-time traffic, particularly in terms of anomaly score, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score metrics.

the emergence of 5G New Radio technology, especially using millimeter-wave frequencies, offers unparalleled data rates and low latency, which are crucial for the new generation. However, the limited range of high-frequency bands, such as mmWave and TeraHertz, results in frequent channel quality fluctuations and handoffs. Additionally, urban micro-cellular deployments encounter frequent channel variations and outages due to UE (vehicle) mobility, making it challenging for TCP protocols to adapt to fluctuating link quality and network capacity. this often results in underutilized resources, service disruptions, and connectivity gaps. To address these issues, we introduce mmTCP—a solution that dynamically adjusts the congestion window based on signal quality post-handoff to minimize delay and maximize throughput, enabling the transport layer to adapt to shifting wireless conditions. mmTCP optimizes congestion and flow control to mitigate link fluctuations and enhance user experience. ns-3 experiments show that mmTCP consistently improves throughput by up to 42% and reduces latency by up to 43% through effective link-layer adaptations in Numerology 2.

Exploring influential spreaders and predicting missing links in complex networks is essential for understanding and effectively controlling network dynamics. this paper presents a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN)-based link prediction method to estimate the probability of future link formation. We incorporate node features that capture local and global topological connectivity structures and feed these into the GCN model, where convolutional layers aggregate neighboring information and transform node features. this approach enables the model to capture structural patterns by integrating local and global information from neighboring nodes. In the final layer, the GCN model computes a prediction score representing the likelihood of an edge’s existence, using insights gained during training. Finally, considering the predicted links, we update the network structure and introduce a novel centrality method called Emerging Spreader Centrality (ESC) to identify emerging spreaders within this augmented network. We conduct two separate experiments to evaluate the performance of the GCN-based link prediction and the ESC method, comparing their effectiveness with various state-of-the-art methods. Results demonstrate that our approach not only effectively predicts future links but also identifies emerging spreaders in the augmented networks.

the advancement in technology leads to provide an efficient communication among vehicles to offload resource-intensive tasks for transportation-based services. However, it may cause issue related to efficient secure resource utilization among vehicular nodes. the key reason behind these considerations are the high mobility of vehicles and their high computational requirements for task execution. To solve these issues, an osmotic computing based vehicular communication scheme has been proposed. the primary objective of the scheme is to provide a communication model which can perform effective secure resource management among static or dynamic vehicular nodes through Osmotic Computing. By utilizing the key components of osmotic computing such as osmotic resource manager and node manager, numerous resources have been shared with the vehicles in an effective way. the performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated using simulation. Results obtained show that the proposed scheme outperform the existing schemes in terms of various performance evaluation parameters.

the evolution of 5G and anticipated 6G networks presents new opportunities for connectivity, performance, and services, but it also introduces substantial security risks due to increased complexity and attack surfaces. Traditional perimeter-based security models fall short in these environments, prompting a shift towards Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA), which enforces principles of strict identity verification, least-privilege access, and continuous monitoring. As ZTA gains traction, standardization bodies such as NIST, 3GPP, and ETSI are developing guidelines to incorporate Zero Trust principles into 5G and 6G infrastructures. this paper explores how these standardization efforts, alongside core ZTA principles, provide a resilient and adaptable security framework for 5G and future 6G networks. Furthermore, the paper highlights the challenges of implementing Zero Trust in 5G and 6G networks and suggests future directions for overcoming these obstacles.
