Deep Neural networks (DNNs) are now widely used in Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs), both for sensor data or perception processing and also as neural network controllers. However, resource constraints often prevent a full local deployment of the DNNs, e.g., on edge devices. Implementing them on the cloud, on the other hand, is associated with large delays and large volumes of data transfers. this has resulted in the emergence of Split Computing (SC), where a part of the DNN is implemented on an edge device and the rest in the cloud. However, how to design control strategies with such a setup has not been sufficiently investigated in the past. In this paper, we study controller design strategies where state estimates from sensor data processed on an edge device are combined with estimates obtained from the cloud. While the former is associated with low delays, the state estimates have higher errors or uncertainties. the estimates from the cloud, obtained with larger DNNs, are, however, delayed. We show that the problem of sizing the DNNs on the edge and the cloud can be formulated as an optimization problem with the goal of maximizing system safety.

Bridging the world with energy efficient communication using solar panels as communication receivers is an innovative step toward sustainable connectivity. this approach not only leverages renewable energy to power communication infrastructure but also enhances the efficiency and reach of networks, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Light communication offers high-speed data transfer and is cost-effective due to the vast unlicensed spectrum available. However, there is a challenge of high capacitive effect leading to sluggish switching response that limits solar panel operation to a few kbps. this paper presents the experimental validation of analog circuitry that improves the solar panel response, resulting in high-speed data transmission. the result presents a data rate of 10.7 Mbps over a solar panel with a received optical power of 0.36 mW transmitted using infrared light-emitting diodes. the fusion of solar power and communication technology presents a solution that addresses environmental concerns while fostering global connectivity, ensuring that even the most isolated regions can participate in the digital age.

Fighting the propagation of misinformation within a social media group or community by focusing on identifying dishonest members who deliberately try to quash any constructive social movement is very challenging because such people use advanced tactics to create division and doubt by manipulating information. the present research aims to develop a hybrid heuristic model to identify those who intentionally spread misleading information on social media to jeopardize a social movement. We frame this issue under the heading of Graph Semi-supervised Learning (GSSL), and we propose a hybrid model that falls under the heuristic approach, called Label Propagation-Gated Recurrent Unit (LP-GRU). LP-GRU can effectively identify perpetrators of disinformation within social communities by fusing community structure from the Label Propagation algorithm with behavioral patterns identified by GRU. Compared to previous heuristic approaches, we achieve up to 76% accuracy when using the LP-GRU model on augmented semi-synthetic social network data.

Social media, a platform for rapid information dissemination, has undergone a significant shift. Its users are no longer passive recipients but active creators of content. this paradigm shift has led to a surge in the quantity and diversity of information, reducing their credibility and paving the way for the production and spread of rumors. the prevalence of rumors poses a severe threat to the trustworthiness of the entire social media ecosystem. the adverse impact of rumors underscores the urgent need for their detection, making it a pressing concern and a crucial requirement. this paper introduces a rumor detection approach that combines affective and psycholinguistic information flow on social media, user attributes, propagation structures, and a word embedding model. It leverages external lexicon-based knowledge to extract the affective and psycholinguistic information flow on social media. It entails detecting rumors utilizing users’ profiles and propagation structure information, and uses word-level GloVe embedding to preserve the semantic relations of the posts and their underlying affective information. the proposed approach is evaluated over the publicly available ${\text{Twitter}}/\mathbb{X}$ dataset and compared to eight baselines and state-of-the-art approaches, demonstrating substantially remarkable performance for rumor detection on social media.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) and Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) are prominently emerging technologies in the field of wireless communications. RIS enhances signal strength and coverage by intelligently adjusting the phase shifts of electromagnetic waves, while SWIPT enables the concurrent transmission of information and power, addressing the growing demand for energy-efficient networks. In this paper, we explored resource allocation algorithms for RIS assisted SWIPT system, utilizing Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) for data transmission. the system consists of a single RIS that aids communication between a base station (BS) and the user equipment (UE). Each RIS element reflects multiple orthogonal sub-carriers, optimizing the overall system performance. Two novel algorithms for OFDM sub-carrier allocation and RIS element selection are proposed such that the data rate and the harvested energy are maximized at the user end, where the separated architecture of the SWIPT technology is employed. Numerical results confers that increasing number of RIS elements and OFDM sub-carriers enhances both the data rate and the energy harvested, underscoring the effectiveness of our optimization approach.

networks appear across various domains, and identifying central nodes in temporal networks is more challenging than in static networks. Temporal betweenness centrality is the widely used method to assess the importance of the nodes. this method is based on shortest temporal path calculations. However, computing this centrality metrics value is computationally intensive, especially for large-scale networks. Various approximation algorithms exist, but they often lack efficiency or accuracy. We introduce TGNN-Bet, a temporal graph neural network model, to approximate temporal betweenness centrality. In TGNN-Bet, each node gathers features from multi-hop neighbors, enabling the model to simulate paths and capture the reachability of nodes. the model’s effectiveness is validated using the Spearman correlation (ρ) performance metric and comparing system runtimes with the existing temporal betweenness centrality method. Experimental results on six real-world temporal networks demonstrate that TGNN-Bet strongly correlates with existing temporal betweenness centrality methods. the proposed TGNN-Bet model achieves an average computation time reduction of 94.216% compared to conventional temporal betweenness centrality methods.

the 5G core is an important part of a 5G network, and with the exponential growth of connected devices and dynamic traffic conditions, it is essential for the 5G core to be scalable and fault-tolerant. this requirement is even more important with the softwarization of the packet core and cloud-based deployments. this paper presents a comparison of design choices when building a scalable and fault-tolerant 5G core on a Kubernetes-orchestrated cloud platform. Prior work in this direction does not fully explore all design choices, or is not compliant with 3GPP standards. In contrast, we start with a 3GPP-compliant production-grade 5G core, and build multiple variants of cloud-native 5G core components. We leverage Kubernetes’ automatic failover, and auto-scaling capabilities in different ways to make the 5G core scalable and fault-tolerant. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the scalability and resilience of various design choices, and to quantify the overheads of cloud deployments. Our work exposes tradeoffs between performance and fault tolerance, and provides insights on how best to design a scalable and fault-tolerant 5G core on Kubernetes.

Air quality monitoring is gaining increasing importance as awareness about the health impacts of air pollution continues to grow. these monitors typically track air pollutants to give users a clearer picture of their environment. Accurate and real-time monitoring increases our understanding of the surrounding air we breathe and allows us to improve it. the proposed system helps users minimize their exposure to harmful pollutants by providing real-time data on the concentration of various gases. the system triggers alerts directly to the subscribed user’s mobile phones in case of any hazardous situations so that the user can take appropriate actions immediately to resolve the issue. Our extensive data collection and evaluation with off-the-shelf machine learning models indicated an overall F1-score of 99.54 (±0.5)% with a simple random forest model in classifying burning, cooking, occupancy in a closed room, using aerosol products, based on the sensor’s readings.

this work highlights the importance of robustness in artificial intelligence (AI) for maintaining performance in uncertain environments. We focus on tensor decompositions (TD) as a key technique for enhancing robustness, particularly through Quantum-Inspired (QI) methods that effectively manage high-dimensional data. We introduce a hybrid cost function that combines Mean Squared Error (MSE) with a Density Power Divergence (DPD) term, improving model resilience against noise and outliers. In telecommunications, we demonstrate that robust tensor networks using Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) and Robust Singular Value Decomposition (RSVD) enhance anomaly detection performance. Our implementation of RSVD within the DMRG framework surpasses conventional methods, achieving superior accuracy in noisy, real-world conditions. Experimental results confirm the efficiency and robustness of these techniques, underscoring their potential for advancing robust AI and addressing complex optimization challenges.

the 5G and beyond networks aim to outperform their predecessors in terms of data rate, quality of service (QoS), and latency reduction. Visible light communication (VLC) frequencies are widely explored to enable future-generation communications because of their large, license-free bandwidth. VLC-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles can serve as VLC-enabled flying base stations (V-FBSs) and can significantly contribute towards the increase in coverage and improve the network throughput. However, most studies on VLC-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles have neglected the effect of random receiver orientation in their performance analysis of the networks in terms of outage and data rates. In this paper, we analyze the impact of receiver device orientation on the QoS within the V-FBS network. We thoroughly analyze the permissible degrees of freedom for receiver movement, exploring how it influences the angle of incidence and, consequently, the line of sight (LoS) link between the V-FBS and user equipment (UE).
