Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have recently attracted significant attention due to their outstanding ability to be used in different sectors and serve in difficult and dangerous areas. Moreover, the advancements in computer vision and artificial intelligence have increased the use of UAVs in various applications and solutions, such as forest fires detection and borders monitoring. However, using deep neural networks (DNNs) with UAVs introduces several challenges of processing deeper networks and complex models, which restricts their on-board computation. In this work, we present a strategy aiming at distributing inference requests to a swarm of resource-constrained UAVs that classifies captured images on-board and finds the minimum decision-making latency. We formulate the model as an optimization problem that minimizes the latency between acquiring images and making the final decisions. the formulated optimization solution is an NP-hard problem. Hence it is not adequate for online resource allocation. therefore, we introduce an online heuristic solution, namely DistInference, to find the layers placement strategy that gives the best latency among the available UAVs. the proposed approach is general enough to be used for different low decision-latency applications as well as for all CNN types organized into pipeline of layers (e.g., VGG) or based on residual blocks (e.g., ResNet).

Real-time collaborative programming allows a group of programmers to edit the same source code at the same time. To support semantic conflict prevention in real-time collaboration, a dependency-based automatic locking (DAL) approach was proposed in prior work. the DAL mechanism automatically detects programming elements with dependency relationships, and prohibits concurrent editing on the inter-dependent source code regions by locking. However, the prior DAL scheme is too restrictive, which leads to an unnecessarily large locking scope and seriously impacts the concurrent work. To address this issue, we propose a novel hybrid semantic conflict prevention (HSCP) scheme, to achieve a better balance between conflict prevention and concurrent work. the scheme enforces locking on the working and strongly-depended regions, while applies awareness highlight on weakly-depended regions. the depth of locking scope can be customized by each programmer in a fine-grained manner. A three-level awareness mechanism has been designed for programmers to intuitively distinguish working, strongly-depended and weakly-depended regions. In supporting the scheme, we have devised techniques and solutions, and implemented a prototype that supports programmers to enjoy hybrid semantic conflict prevention in real-time collaborative programming over Eclipse and IntelliJ IDEA platforms. Experimental evaluations have confirmed the satisfactory performance of the scheme in complex real-world scenarios. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

We consider the network-side mobile localization problem in future 5G and beyond wireless networks with distributed multi-antenna base stations (BSs). For this application, we propose a semi-supervised multi-point channel charting (SS-MPCC) framework, which consists of (i) collaborative collection of channel state information (CSI) and other side-information by distributed BSs;(ii) local CSI feature extraction and self-learning of a dissimilarity metric, and (iii) global graph construction and constrained manifold learning. We show that side-information from routine network operations, including timestamps, channel qualities, and a small set of labeled samples, can be exploited to construct a consistent global graph. the graph is then mapped to a 2D channel chart using constrained manifold learning for localization purposes. We evaluate the performance of SS-MPCC in a simulated urban outdoor scenario with realistic user motion. Our results show that SS-MPCC achieves a mean localization error of 5.6m with only 10% of labeled CSI samples. SS-MPCC does not require accurate synchronization among multiple BSs and is promising for future cellular localization.

We developed a collaborative virtual environment for architectural planning that facilitates groups of people to work together using three different interfaces. these interfaces enable users to interact with the scene with varying levels of immersion and different interaction modalities. We conducted a user study to gauge the general usability of the system and to understand how the different interfaces affect the group work. In this paper we present the architecture of the system along with its different interfaces. We also present the user study results and the insights we gained from the study. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Cognitive architectures are computational implementations of unified theories of cognition. the consensus of 50 years of research in cognitive architectures can be captured in the form of a Common Model of Cognition that can provide a guide for applications in neuroscience, artificial intelligence and robotics. Being able to represent human cognition in computational form enables a wide range of applications when humans and machines interact. Using cognitive models to represent common ground between deep learners and human users enables adaptive explanations. Cognitive models representing the behavior of cyber attackers can be used to optimize cyber defenses including techniques such as deceptive signaling. Cognitive models of human-automation interaction can improve robustness of human-machine teams by predicting disruptions to measures of trust under various adversarial situations.

the Internet of things (IoT) has led to a surge in smart devices, generating vast volumes of data. Cloud computing offers scalability but does not suffice for many real-time and privacy-sensitive IoT applications. this limitation has prompted a blend of both edge and cloud resources, creating the need for seamless integration, known as the “compute continuum“. Testing applications and resource management techniques within this continuum is vital but can be very complex. Simulation and emulation are preferred methods, with emulation providing more accurate representations of real-world environments. In this paper, we introduce iContinuum, a novel emulation toolkit facilitating an intent-based platform for edge-to-cloud testing and experimentation. Leveraging Software-Defined networking (SDN) and containerization, iContinuum enables experimentation and performance evaluation while aligning application requirements with actual performance. We present our detailed architecture, implementation, and evaluation of iContinuum, showcasing how our proposed toolkit bridges the gap between simulation and real-world deployment within compute continuum environments, and further demonstrate the effectiveness of Intent-Based Scheduling through a specific use case.

Anti-tracking network aims to protect the privacy of network users’ identities and communication relationship. the research of P2P-based anti-tracking network has attracted more and more attentions because of its decentralization, scalability, and widespread distribution. But, P2P-based anti-tracking network still faces the attacks on network structure which can destroy the usability of anti-tracking network effectively. So, a secure and resilient network structure is an important prerequisite to maintain the stability and security of anti-tracking network. In this paper, we propose a topology self-optimization method for anti-tracking network via nodes distributed computing. Based on convex-polytope topology (CPT), our proposal achieves topology self-optimization by each node optimizing its local topology in optimum structure. through the collaboration of all nodes in network, the whole network topology will evolve into the optimum structure. Our experimental results show that the topology self-optimization method improves the network robustness and resilience of anti-tracking network when confronting to the dynamic network environment. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Textual reviews of items are a popular resource of online recommendation. the semantic of reviews helps to achieve improved representation of users and items for recommendation. Current review-based recommender systems understand the semantic of reviews from a static view, i.e., independent of the specific user-item pair. However, the semantic of the reviews are personalized and context-aware, i.e., same reviews can have different semantics when they are written by different users or towards different items. therefore, we propose an improved recommendation model by reconstructing multiple reviews into a personalized document. Given a user-item pair, we design a cross-attention model to build personalized documents by selecting important words in the reviews of the given user towards the given item and vice versa. A semantic encoder of personalized document is then designed using a cross-transformer mechanism to learn document-level representation of users and items. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

With the development of IoT and 5G, data are generated by the numerous smart end devices at each moment. Simultaneously, as the improvement of the hardware’s performance, computing and storage are partly transferred to the edge of the Internet. However, the core cloud and massive data centers are still responsible for management and coordination. In more and more local-area and small-scale scenarios such as a parking lot, an office building, or a college campus, these scenarios also need the edge nodes to offload computing and storage tasks. Moreover, in order to decrease costs and be lightweight, these scenarios need to decouple with the core cloud partly. In this paper, we proposed a collaborative edge-edge data storage service called DECS for edge computing in local-area scenarios. DECS can make the edge nodes collaborate with others. Such as trade-off to pick the most appropriate edge node to offload storage or computing tasks. DECS can also replicate data or generate forwarding rules in advance by predicting data’s popularity proactively. In this paper, we evaluated DECS at two real scenarios compared with state-of-the-art research. the experiment results proved that DECS was more suitable for the local-area edge cluster. Which lowered the access latency, saved the total bandwidth, and improved the resource utilization of the whole edge cluster. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.
