Augmented Reality (AR) has become a ubiquitous technology in daily working, learning, and spare life. However, AR still lacks research in terms of productivity and design for being effective on users and the situations it is used in. Particularly in collaborative and also educational settings, the technology has to be adapted in order to be effective for all users concerned. Moreover, the design of the scenario the technology is realised in has to be adapted to the needs and requirements of a productive digital learning environment. In this context, the question still needs investigation how these applications affected e.g. the learning process. As a basis, this paper examines the state of the art of the design process in terms of developing collaborative AR applications and their respective use cases. Besides technical requirements, this paper also focuses on user-centered criteria in terms of usability and effectiveness for collaborative processes in order to lay the groundwork for designing a didactical concept. In order to develop a list of requirements of design criteria for both the didactic scenario and the collaborative AR application, a literature-based requirements analysis has been conducted. thus, a set of criteria for designing collaborative AR has been deduced. this set is categorised in order to give a detailed description for developing AR applications for collaborative settings on different levels and constraints, e.g. regarding didactic methods, implementation process, usability and user experience design, and necessary resources (for both developing and using collaborative AR). Also, the catalogue presented in this paper will not be finalised but iteratively adjusted to the findings of the empirical study.

With advancements in personalised medicine, healthcare delivery systems have moved away from the one-size-fits-all approach towards tailored treatments that meet the needs of individuals and specific subgroups. As nearly one-third of those diagnosed with epilepsy are classed as refractory and are resistant to antiepileptic medication, there is a need for a personalised method of detecting epileptic seizures. Epidemiological studies show that up to 91% of those diagnosed identify one or more triggers as the causation of their seizure onset. these triggers are patient-specific and can affect those diagnosed in different ways dependent on each person’s idiosyncratic tolerance and threshold levels. Whilst these triggers are known to induce seizure onset, only a few studies have even considered their use as a preventive component. therefore, this pilot study investigates the use of patient-specific triggers (PST) in diagnosed epileptics, and whether they can be used as an additional modality when detecting seizures. this study used a precision medicine approach with artificial intelligence (AI), to train and test several patient-specific algorithms that classified epileptic seizures based on the PST of each participant. Experimental results show accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity scores of 94.73%, 96.90% and 93.33% for participant 1 and 96.87%, 96.96% and 96.77% for participant 2, respectively. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Online social medias provide convenient platforms for information spread, which makes the social network structure plays important role on online information spread. Although online social network structure can be obtained easily, few researches use network structure information in the cascade of the resharing prediction task. In this paper, we propose a cascade prediction method (named by CPNSA) involves the network structure information into cascade prediction of resharing task. the method is based on the recurrent neural network, and we introduce a network structure attention to incorporates the network structure information into cascade representation. In order to fuse network structure information with cascading time series data, we use network embedding method to get the representations of nodes from the network structure firstly. then we use the attention mechanism to capture the structural dependency for cascade prediction of resharing. Experiments are conducted on both synthetic and real-world datasets, and the results show that our approach can effectively improve the performance of the cascade prediction of resharing. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Despite much work on social media, analysis of individual influence campaigns, messages, and platforms, we lack the tools and techniques and fundamental research to effectively understand the information flows and their effects on the dynamics of the entire information ecosystem. For example, how information is amplified or dampened as it moves from one online community to another, how information is spinned or framed into narratives that favor or malign viewpoints organically or by foreign actors, how disinformation flows from fringe to mainstream communities, etc. We postulate that the information ecosystem is an attention economy, and that influence-the ability to gather attention towards a particular message or messages- is its currency. As a result, we model the information ecosystem as a complex network of influences flowing between actors, communities and platforms. this paper advocate for the use of information-theoretic entropic methods to model and characterize this complex network of influences over time: Influence Cascades Ecosystem (ICE). We envision leveraging the concept of influence cascades in conjunction with a novel geopolitical news-centric model of the information ecosystem in order to better understand the influence pathways by which various types of information (new articles from trusted, untrusted, fringe or mainstream sources) propagate across the social and traditional hybrid media environment.

the pervasive nature of smart connected devices has intruded on our daily lives and has become an intrinsic part of our world. However, the wide use of the Internet of things (IoT) in critical application domains has raised concerns for user privacy and security against growing cyber threats. In particular, the implications of cyber exploitation for IoT devices are beyond financial losses and could constitute risks to human life. Most deployed access control solutions for smart IoT systems do not offer policy individualization, the ability to specify or change the policy according to the individual user’s preference. As a result, currently deployed systems are not well suited to specify access control policies in a multi-user environment, where users access the same devices to perform different operations. the system’s security gets tricky when the smart ecosystem involves complicated social relationships, much like in a smart home. Relationship-based access control (ReBAC), widely used in online social networks, offers the ability to consider user relationships in defining access control decisions and supports policy individualization. However, to the best of our knowledge, no such attempt has been made to develop a formal ReBAC model for smart IoT systems. this paper proposes a ReBAC IoT dynamic and fine-grained access control model which considers the social relationships among users along with the attributes to support an attributes-aware relationship-based access control model for smart IoT systems. ReBAC IoT is formally defined, illustrated through different use cases, implemented, and tested.

this research is focused on the analysis of how emotional aspects of people participating in decision-making through group discussions in online platforms manifest themselves. A particular emphasis is on the toxicity levels of discussions on various issues. three platforms have been chosen for a comparative study: the first is a Reddit-like online forum, the second is Polis, where participants may vote on issues and is touted as a forum for computational democracy, and the third is called the Deliberatorium, developed at the Center for Collective Intelligence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. these platforms have their own specific structures that aid in group discussions on various issues. An important question that has been examined in this paper is how to characterize the contagion of toxicity in the three platforms and the extent to which their structures inhibit it. Our approach has been to first extract two sets of actual data from the three platforms: a control group and an experimental group where in the latter, an intervention is used by inserting an empathy statement to inhibit toxicity. Toxicity levels (determined using Google Perspective API) were compared using sample data from the three platforms. We use generative models that extend the sample datasets by adding synthetic nodes (artificial entries in group discussions) from the three platforms based on parameter values of popularity, novelty, root-bias, and reciprocity among participants. Two additional parameters of node type and toxicity score were added to these synthetic nodes. the generative models help in extending existing datasets to determine the contagion of toxicity in the platform. this is achieved by developing an index for toxicity contagion, EC tox expressed as a percentage of the total number of nodes. the idea of developing this index has been adapted from work in ecological studies where contagion of a certain type of land patch is examined in the presence of several dif

By offloading computing tasks from mobile devices to edge servers with sufficient computing resources, network congestion and data propagation delays can be effectively reduced. the placement of edge servers is the core of task offloading and is a multi-objective optimization problem with multiple resource constraints. An optimization model of edge server placement has been established in this paper by minimizing both access delay and workload difference as the optimization goal. then, based on Glowworm Swarm algorithm, it proposes a mobile edge server placement approach called GSOESP to achieve a multi-objective optimization goal. In this study, we use the improved Glowworm Swarm Optimization (GSO) algorithm to find the optimal places as the clustering center which is the edge server placement address, and every base station in edge server’s neighbor list is allocated to the edge server. After many iterations, we gradually approach the optimal target. So, the optimal placement scheme is obtained to achieve the goals of minimizing the distance for users to access the edge server and balancing the workload. the GSOESP algorithm is similar to a fast clustering algorithm with good time performance. Experimental results using Shanghai Telecom’s real dataset show that the proposed approach achieves an optimal balance between low latency and workload balancing, while guaranteeing service quality, which outperforms several existing representative approaches. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Deep learning provides many new and efficient solutions for edge computing. We study training image classification models on edge devices in this paper. Although there have been many researches on deep learning in edge computing. Most of them did not consider the impact of the limited service capabilities of edge devices, the problem of straggler and insecurity of training data on the system. We design a new distributed computing system to train image classification models on edge devices. To be more specific, we vectorize the convolutional neural network (CNN) to transform it to a lot of matrix multiplications. these matrix multiplications can be arbitrarily cut into many smaller matrix multiplications suitable for computing on edge devices. Besides, our system utilizes codes to ensure the stability and security of distributed matrix multiplications on edge devices. In the performance evaluation, we test the performance of matrix multiplications and a CNN model training in our system with uncoded and coded strategies. the evaluation results show that the system with code strategies perform better than with uncoded strategies on the edge devices having the problem of straggler. With the vigorous development of the platform-based service ecosystem represented by e-commerce, service recommendation is used as a personalized matching method. there exist some service recommendation strategies that mainly focus on high popularity services and ignore non-popular ones. this will not only lead to oligopoly, but also be detrimental to the health of the platform-based service ecosystem. In addition, the health evaluation indicators for this kind of ecosystems are mostly qualitative and single. In view of the above phenomenon and based on the system view of balance and health, a health index model (HIM) is proposed to measure the health from two aspects quantitatively: stability and sustainability. Specifically, the model includes the system activity and organizational structure reflecting stability, as well as the productivity and vitality reflecting sustainability, which helps to illustrate the health status of the platform-based service ecosystem from the perspective of multi-dimensional integration. Additionally, this paper analyzes the factors affecting the health of this ecosystem based on HIM. In this work, a platform-based service ecosystem simulation model is constructed by using the computational experiment method to verify the effectiveness of HIM. the simulation results show that the HIM can reasonably measure the health of such ecosystems, which has guiding significance for the overall management and sound development of e-commerce platforms. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Mobile Augmented Reality (AR) has become a reality thanks to improvements in mobile hardware. Still, mobile AR lags behind its desktop counterpart in both latency and performance. Simple offloading to external computers has been attempted, but is not practical due to high communication latency and adverse user experience. In this paper, we propose a novel Mobile Edge computing framework for Augmented Reality applications (MEC-AR). MEC-AR is designed to take advantage of 5G cellular networks and make optimized computation-offloading decisions in a multi-tiered hierarchy. A three-layered architecture involving the end user, the mobile edge, and finally the cloud is envisioned. In the context of MEC resource management, we cast a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) that aims at finding an efficient application placement on the MEC-AR layers to minimize the network latency. We evaluate the performance of our proposed MEC-AR framework by conducting extensive experimental analysis using images taken around Rutgers University. Simulation results coupled with real-time experiments on a small-scale MEC testbed show that our hierarchical computation mechanism improves the performance of mobile AR applications in terms of both energy consumption and network latency.
