We propose and define a new primitive, collaborative verifiable delay functions (coVDFs), an extension to VDFs allowing multiple parties to jointly compute a publicly verifiable delay, whilst encapsulating a personal input from each party. these personal inputs can contain information such as a hash of a bid in an auction, or some public identifier of the solving party. We highlight the differences between the single-party and the multi-party settings, and discuss some applications facilitated by the additional properties offered by coVDFs. We formalise this new primitive, as well as the relevant security properties, and we introduce the notions of robustness and traceability, which mitigate adversarial behaviour arising from the introduction of multiple parties. We propose two candidate constructions: the first is an extension of Wesolowski’s VDF construction from EUROCRYPT 2019, relying on repeated squaring in a finite abelian group. We prove that this extension satisfies the traceability property, however it is not robust. Our second construction is based on the hashgraph protocol proposed by Baird in 2016, and involves each of the n parties repeatedly implementing a gossip protocol to one another and computing a hash each time they do. the construction results in every party producing a copy of the same graph, and is robust, meaning it runs correctly, in the presence of up to n/3 malicious parties. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the last few years, the cloudification of applications requires new concepts and techniques to fully reap the benefits of the new computing paradigm. Among them, the microservices architectural style, which is inspired by service-oriented architectures, has gained attention from both industry and academia. However, decomposing a monolith into multiple microservices also creates several challenges across the application’s lifecycle. In this work, we focus on the operation aspect of microservices, and present our novel proposal to enable self-optimizing microservices systems based on grid search and random search techniques. the initial results show our approach is able to optimize the latency performance of microservices to up to 10.56%.

By combining the advantages of both quantum computing and deep learning, quantum neural networks have become popular in recent research. In order to collaborate multiple quantum machines with local training data to train a global model, quantum federated learning is proposed. However, similar to classic federated learning, when communicating with multiple machines, quantum federated learning also faces the threats of Byzantine attacks. the byzantine attack is a kind of attack in a distributed system when some machines upload malicious information instead of the honest computational results to the server. In this article, we compare the differences of Byzantine problems between classic distributed learning and quantum federated learning, and modify the previously proposed four kinds of Byzantine tolerant algorithms to the quantum version. We conduct simulated experiments to show a similar performance of the quantum version with the classic version.

Maintaining motivation to meet physical exercise goals is a big challenge in virtual/home-based exercise guidance systems. Lack of motivation, long-maintained bad daily routines, and fear of injury are some of the reasons that cause this hesitation. this paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based virtual exercise assistant capable of providing encouragement and customized feedback on body movement form over time. Repeated arm curls were observed and tracked using single and dual-camera systems using the Posenet pose estimation library. To accumulate enough experience across individuals, the reinforcement learning model was collaboratively trained by subjects. the proposed system is tested on 36 subjects. Behavioral changes are apparent in 31 of the 36 subjects, with 31 subjects reducing movement errors over time and 15 subjects completely eliminating the errors. the system was analyzed for which types of feedback provided the highest expected value, and feedback directly related to the previous mistake provided the highest valued feedback ( $p < 0.0133$ ). the result showed that the Reinforcement Learning system provides meaningful feedback and positively impacts behavior progress.

With the growth of IoT and latency-sensitive applications (e.g., virtual reality, autonomous driving), massive amounts of data are generated at the network and the edge. Such proliferation drives the development of dispersed computing as a promising complementary paradigm to cloud computing and edge computing. Dispersed computing can leverage in-network computing resources to provide lower latency guarantees and more reliable computing power support than the cloud computing. On the other hand, dispersed computing shows excellent performance in highly dynamic and heterogeneous environments. this paper introduces the concepts of dispersed computing and demonstrates the potential of dispersed computing in terms of providing low-latency services and adapting to highly dynamic and heterogeneous environments through several cases. To better grasp the current state of research in dispersed computing, several major research directions and advances are also presented in the hope of attracting the attention of the community and inspiring more researches to promote the implementation of dispersed computing.

Smart Cyber-Physical Systems (SCPS) has enhanced use of smart devices with numerous applications including smart cities, smart traffic management, smart cars, smart health care and smart grids. Core logic behind these applications usually require huge processing or massive data handling which are normally performed at cloud but the application will suffer from latency. Edge computing offers solution for latency aware computations at edge of the network but with limited resources available at edge nodes. this problem can be resolved by leveraging edge resources in a group and executing resource intensive task. Most previous studies deploy centralized methods for clustering but comes with overhead of cluster formation and management. In this article, key idea is to group heterogeneous edge nodes on task arrival in a decentralize way, and handle task allocation and execution in parallel on group devices to achieve its deadline. Our methodology will help to reduce traffic amount travelling towards cloud in case of resource intensive big tasks of SCPS applications. We have proposed an algorithm for decentralized group formation and presented task division and allocation methodology for parallel execution. Our results show that our technique is working while providing desired goals of reducing overall latency, and limiting network traffic as well as achieving higher ratio for number of tasks meeting their deadline.

5G mobile networks will be soon available to handle all types of applications and to provide service to massive numbers of users. In this complex and dynamic network ecosystem, end-to-end performance analysis and optimization will be key features in order to effectively manage the diverse requirements imposed by multiple vertical industries over the same shared infrastructure. To enable such a vision, the MARSAL project [ 1] targets the development and evaluation of a complete framework for the management and orchestration of network resources in 5G and beyond by utilizing a converged optical-wireless network infrastructure in the access and fronthaul/midhaul segments. At the network design domain, MARSAL targets the development of novel cell-free-based solutions. Namely, scalable and cost-efficient wireless access points deployment will be achieved by exploiting the distributed cell-free concept combined with wireless and wired serial fronthaul approaches. We will target the inclusion of these innovative functionalities in the O-RAN project. In parallel, in the fronthaul/midhaul segments MARSAL aims to radically increase the flexibility of optical access architectures for Beyond-5G cell site connectivity via different levels of fixed-mobile convergence. In the network and service management domain, the design philosophy of MARSAL is to provide a comprehensive framework for the management of the entire set of communication and computational network resources by exploiting novel ML-based algorithms of both edge and midhaul data centers, by incorporating the Virtual Elastic Data Centers/Infrastructures paradigm. Finally, at the network security domain, MARSAL aims to introduce mechanisms that provide privacy and security to application workload and data, targeting to allow applications and users to maintain control over their data when relying on the deployed shared infrastructures, while AI and Blockchain technologies will be developed in order to guarantee a secured
