the fast-paced technological advances, the availability of social media applications for participation, and the great amount of data to be interpreted are defying policy-makers to interact and communicate and to take measures to respond accordingly to the citizens' expectations. this research analyzes social media strategies in the strategic digital city for harnessing the citizen's collective intelligence. the research methodology used was a case study of a Brazilian city. Data were collected from a structured interview and from the 2013-2016 social media report released by the city hall. Results reveal that the local government uses social media applications for broadcasting institutional information and service information, for service delivery, and crowdsourcing practices. the research analysis concluded that the city of Curitiba uses social media as a strategic digital city resource for strengthening citizen engagement by envisaging different crowdsourcing practices and some novel content and action-driven strategies as storytelling, piquing curiosity, the use of memes, pop culture, the creation of characters, nicknames, among others.

In an open source cloud computing platform such as OpenStack, operators use Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) model to grant access to cloud resources. However, these user-level role-based access control techniques fail to include comprehensive user context. We believe a situational aware framework will improve security by bringing in user's context to such cloud systems. In this paper, we create a semantically rich context-sensitive access control system for OpenStack by incorporating the user's current context attributes like location, time, etc. In a proof-of-concept implementation, we integrate a knowledge graph with our own access control system to express and enforce the contextual-situation policies in OpenStack. the proposed system provides enhanced, flexible access control while minimizing the overhead of altering the existing access control framework. We also discuss various use cases, to highlight the benefits of our system and show enforcement results.

the optimistic consistency control method known as Operational Transformation (OT) has been studied by researchers for nearly three decades, with centralized versions lying at the heart of most real-time web co-editing tools in academia and industry. Concurrent document editing is now a "must-have" for the modern workplace, with proven benefits in team productivity and efficiency. Once limited to primitive insert and delete operations, OT algorithms have evolved to support hierarchical data structures such as XML in order to meet the increasingly complex requirements of present-day collaborative applications. However, previous approaches have not focused on the changes that web applications enact upon the Document Object Model (DOM) of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) standard. this paper will present a feedback-based real-time architecture that allows arbitrary DOM-based document replicas to remain consistent by defining a new set of operations that preserve the user's editing intentions. the control loop of the architecture enables simultaneous DOM-based modifications by using novel conflict resolution algorithms and methods that bring "Virtual DOM" concepts together with state-of-the-art OT principles to enable advanced operations such as moving, splitting and merging of hierarchical DOM nodes. through the implementation and evaluation of a rich-text editor, it will be shown how the architecture facilitates and accelerates the development of multi-user interactive web applications that meet today's demanding latency, scalability and accessibility requirements.

the objective of this paper is to move a step ahead in investigation and create a feasible, cost effective fetal ECG analysis tool for clinical practice which will be easy for usage by any non-skilled personal and provide actionable medical information such as the QRS complex of fetal ECG, fetal HR etc. In this method, a composite abdominal ECG is subjected to a pre-processing stage which involves filtering and normalization, then fed into the ‘thresholding and peak finding’ stage to detect the maternal ECG peaks. the next stage involves construction of the MLE of maternal ECG embedded in the abdominal ECG. After this, the constructed MLE which represent the maternal ECG is subtracted from the abdominal ECG to obtain fetal ECG along with a smidgen of noise. this noise which adulterates the fetal ECG is removed by filtering, done at the post processing stage. thresholding and peak finding is done at the post processed signal to calculate the fetal HR. this paper puts forth a promising possibility of implementing the proposed algorithm in any suitable hardware model, since an average Accuracy of 76.8% and average Sensitivity of 90.7% is attained. © 2018, Springer international Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

Traditionally, a Certification Authority (CA) is required to sign, manage, verify and revoke public key certificates. Multiple CAs together form the CA-based Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). the use of a PKI forces one to place trust in the CAs, which have proven to be a single point-of-failure on multiple occasions. Blockchain has emerged as a transformational technology that replaces centralized trusted third parties with a decentralized, publicly verifiable, peer-to-peer data store which maintains data integrity among nodes through various consensus protocols. In this paper, we deploy three blockchain-based alternatives to the CA-based PKI for supporting IoT devices, based on Emercoin Name Value Service (NVS), smart contracts by Ethereum blockchain, and Ethereum Light Sync client. We compare these approaches with CA-based PKI and show that they are much more efficient in terms of computational and storage requirements in addition to providing a more robust and scalable PKI.

In the context of smart city, real-time routing and traffic prediction applications have specific requirements as for their needed input data, shaping, and efficient retrieval. the recent applications and services need to have integrated data store for efficient data access and deduction. the models at the state of the art are not satisfactory. therefore, Sii-Mobility research and development project of Italian Ministry has developed a new model ontology, named the Km4City. It makes possible, among several services also the routing and traffic reconstruction. In the paper, the model identified and processes for knowledge base construction are described. the process takes into account Open Street Map, open data, and real-time data from sensors, mobility and transport operator in multiple formats and protocols, to load them into Km4City KB. A Traffic Reconstruction solution based on differential equations has been also presented. the data model and the solution developed with related algorithms are part of Km4City (***), and accessible for test and usage from Http://*** and from Http://*** applied in Tuscany whole, one of the larges regions in Italy.

Traditional urban pollution monitoring systems suffer of the sole presence of fixed stations. Data gathered from such devices are precise, thanks to the equipment quality and to established and robust measuring protocols, but these sampled data are located in very limited areas and collected by discontinuous monitoring campaigns. the spread of mobile technologies has fostered the development of new approaches like Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS), offering the chance of using mobile devices, even personal ones, as sensors of urban data. Nevertheless, one of the open challenges is the management of the integration of heterogeneous data flows, different from types, technical specifications (e.g. diverse transmission protocols) and semantics. Osmotic computing aims at creating an abstract level between the mobile devices and the cloud, enabling opportunistic filtering and the addition of metadata for improving the data processing flow. this work focuses on the design and the development of the middleware which integrates data coming from mobile and IoT devices specifically deployed in urban contexts using the Osmotic computing paradigm.

the advent, popularity and widespread adoption of Cloud-Native architectures and platforms have revolutionized the way in which applications are being built and deployed in the Cloud. applications designed for Cloud-Native architectures are being migrated from traditional monolithic approach to a Microservices architecture, in which an application is broken down into a collection of small, independent and collaborative services. these applications are dynamically scheduled and managed by Cloud Native platforms. Container Orchestrators (CO), such as Docker, Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, enable the deployment and management of stateless and scalable microservices. However, as more and more stateful applications and workloads are being deployed in Cloud-Native platforms, these platforms must support the workloads by providing persistent storage to the microservices so that data can be protected and accessed beyond the lifecycle of an ephemeral container. In this paper, we present the design and development of a Cloud-Native storage service orchestration platform by leveraging capabilities of the IBM Ubiquity framework. Our ultimate goal is to provide persistent storage across different container orchestrators and supporting multi-protocol access for Volume management within the storage systems, such as SSH, REST, GPFS native protocol using CLI, NFS and Object. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the storage service orchestration development vision by providing a prototype implementation using Docker and General Parallel Filesystem (GPFS), aiming to provide shared storage volumes to containers orchestrated by Docker. As the volume and variety of microservices continue to grow and to dominate the development and deployments of Cloud applications, we conjecture that the proposed storage service orchestration framework will be a critical enabling building block for supporting elastic, reliable and effective microservice architectures in Cloud datacenters.

Despite the pressing need for effective and automated Service Level Agreement (SLA) management in the Cloud computing industry, typical SLA management systems today do not foster re-usability and standardization of SLAs. From a technical perspective, it is difficult to provide reusable building blocks for formal SLAs that are concise and straight-forward to use, yet flexible enough to be re-used in new business engagements without further customization. As a result, extensive manual work is needed for setting up SLAs between business partners, slowing down new business engagements. In this industry paper, we outline novel routes for extending the state of the art in SLA management with regard to cross-client and cross-engagement re-usability in large-scale Cloud environments. Specifically, we present novel formal constructs for cross-engagement SLA templates in combination with engagement-specific classifiers for SLA-related monitoring data. We show a prototypical implementation in an SLA management suite, the ysla language and Engine, and report on the resulting improvements in conciseness and efficiency of SLA modeling by means of a real use-case example from industry.
