General Purpose Graphic Processing Units (GPGPUs) are widely used in data-intensive applications, such as multimedia and high-performance computing. these technologies are currently used also to support safety-critical applications (e.g., in the automotive and industrial domains) to implement computer vision, sensor fusion, or machine learning algorithms, which often require the processing of complex transcendent or trigonometric functions. In these cases, an integrated special function unit in the GPGPU is utilized, which is intended to increase the performance in parallel operations. However, this complex module is not present in most of the available architectural and micro-architectural open-source models of GPGPUs, so limiting the characterization and analysis of applications using these units. In this work, we report about the design and functional verification of a Special Function Unit to execute transcendent and trigonometric operations in GPGPUs. We integrated the proposed module within an open-source GPGPU (FlexGripPlus) implementing the G80 micro-architecture. the experimental results show the significant improvements in performance and accuracy achievable by using these modules in parallel applications running in a GPGPU.

An increasing number of biologically-inspired control approaches for bipedal walking are demonstrating impressive capabilities in simulations. Although many of them share the main assumptions about the simulated biped, so far no physical system has been presented that meets the requirements. thus, in this paper we are presenting the Compliant Robotic Leg (CARL) - a fully actuated bio-inspired planar robotic leg that incorporates mono-as well as biarticular actuation. Its development is motivated by the vision to validate the Bio-inspired Behavior Based Bipedal Locomotion Control (B4LC) on a physical platform. this paper provides an overview of the driving requirements for the different subsystems and the derived implementation. Two experiments were performed to proof the functionality of the system. Specifically, some key requirements-transparency, impact tolerance, force and impedance rendering-are demonstrated. To our knowledge, this is the first fully actuated robotic leg including biarticular elements that demonstrates distributed high-fidelity force and impedance control at the actuator level.

Augmented Reality (AR) could overlay computer-generated graphics onto the student's textbooks to make them more attractive, hence, motivate students to learn. However, most existing AR applications use either template (picture) markers or bar-code markers to conceal the information that it wants to display. the formal, being in a pictorial form, can be recognized easily but they are computationally expensive to generate and cannot be easily decoded. the latter displays only numeric data and are therefore cheap to produce and straightforward to decode. However, they look uninteresting and uninformative. In this paper, we present a way that combines the advantage of both the template and bar-code markers to be used in education, e.g. textbook's figures. Our method decorates on top of an original pictorial textbook's figure (e.g. historical photos, images, graphs, charts, maps, or drawings) additional regions, to form a single image stereogram that conceals a bar-code. this novel type of figure displays not only a realistic-looking picture but also contains encoded numeric information on students' textbooks. Students can turn the pages of the book, look at the figures, and understand them without any additional technology. However, if students observe the pages through a hand-held Augmented Reality devices, they see 3D virtual models appearing out of the pages. In this article, we also demonstrate that this pictorial bar-code is relatively robust under various conditions and scaling. thus, it provides a promising AR approach to be used in school textbooks of all grades, to enhance study experiences.

this paper augments the Bag-of-Word scheme in several respects: we incorporate a category label into the clustering process, build classifier-tailored codebooks, and weight codewords according to their probability to occur. A size-adaptive feature clustering algorithm is also proposed as an alternative to k-means. Experiments on the PASCAL VOC 2007 challenge validate the approach for classical hard-assignment as well as VLAD encoding.

this paper presents the design and evaluation of a usability and user experience test of a virtual dressing room. First, we motivate and introduce our recent developed prototype of a virtual dressing room. Next, we present the research and test design grounded in related usability and user experience studies. We give a description of the experimental setup and the execution of the designed usability and user experience test. To this end, we report interesting results and discuss the results with respect to user-centered design and development of a virtual dressing room.

Recently, convolutional networks have achieved great successes in the field of computer vision. In order to improve the efficiency of convolutional networks, large amount of solutions focusing on training algorithms and parallelism strategies have been proposed. In this paper, a novel algorithm based on look-up table is proposed to speed up convolutional networks with small filters by applying GPU. By transforming multiplication operations in the convolution computation to some table-based summation operations, the overhead of convolution computation can be reduced largely. the process of creating table and looking up table is very appropriate for parallelization on GPU. Experiment results show that the proposed approaches can improve the speed of convolution computation by 20%-30%, compared with state-of-the-art existing works.

this paper explores the effect of culture on the emotions invoked when different web sites are viewed and the perception of that website's trustworthiness. Traditionally, researchers in the human computer interaction (HCI) field have focused on task-oriented usability, committed to. improving efficiency. Eventually, the importance of other aspects of technology use was recognized, one of which were emotions, all grouped under the umbrella term - user experience. Numerous studies show that culture has an influence on the user's perception of usability and interface preferences. Seeing this relationship between culture and usability, one between culture and user experience remains to be explored. A survey was conducted as part of the methodology, where two cultural groups, Bosnians and the Chinese participated, with the aim of capturing differences and similarities in the perceptions of different classes of websites. the different types used were flash-based, text-dominated, combination of text and graphics, graphic-intensive and virtual reality. Two samples were culture-specific and the rest either Australian or American. the study reveals the similarities and differences between the two cultural groups examined. Each cultural group rendered both positive and negative emotional responses from the survey and their perceptions of trustworthiness also varied.
