We describe two system models that allow the implementation of dependable applications in asynchronous systems. We provide assumptions that are sufficiently weak to be satisfied by real distributed systems. Nevertheless, we can show that important problems of dependable computing are still solvable. For mobile systems we weaken the assumptions even more and show that it is still possible to solve the consensus problem using eventually perfect failure detectors using communication via stubborn channels.

A Personal Network (PN) is a new type of an overlay network consisting of all personal devices belonging to a user, be they remote or local. Such continuous and seamless connectivity of all personal devices belonging to a user enables the development of new applications and improved services. A Personal Network is an intelligent and user-centric network that assists the user in an unobtrusive way. In this paper we investigate means of securing communication between geographically distributed Personal Network clusters. Clusters are ad-hoc networks of co-located personal devices. Using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology enables the creation of secure tunnels between gateways of different clusters, making it possible to transfer all types of intra-cluster traffic securely, over the insecure public network. the ad-hoc nature of clusters when coupled with the mobile and resource constrained nature of many personal devices makes enforcing security a challenging task. We investigate the suitability of existing VPN technologies to secure inter-cluster communication. Our contribution is in identifying aspects of existing solutions that render them unsuitable in their current form for constrained personal devices. We propose a modified framework based on IPSec and KINK that better satisfies the requirements of personal devices by reducing the cost of security.

We consider two problems related to communication between geographically distributed family members. First, we examine the problem of supporting peripheral awareness, in order to improve both emotional well-being and awareness of family activity. this is based on a field study to determine the role and importance of various peripheral cues in different aspects of everyday activities. the results from the study were used to guide the design of our proposed augmented communications environment. Second, we consider the choice of mechanism to facilitate the on-demand transition to foreground communication in such an environment. the design suggests an expansion of Buxton's taxonomy of foreground and background interaction technologies to encompass a third class of peripheral communications.

Recent advancements in the design, fabrication and packaging of micro electro-mechanical (MEM) sensors with embedded computing and wireless communication capabilities have made positive impacts on persistent surveillance of large areas in hostile conditions. We outline a set of core capabilities required of smart sensors to establish their precise location and perform collaborative sensing to gain and maintain maximum situation awareness. Such features include: CORDIC structured computations, direction selective transmission and reception through RF-MEMS, chip-scale atomic clock (CSAC), infra structure assisted sensing, among others. then we outline several system-level considerations such as: command, control, collaborative & cognitive computation and communication, and offer an end-user perspective of intelligent sensors in mission oriented sensor networks. the objective is to provide insights into the critical challenges for increasing the effectiveness of future sensor networks. We use a hypothetical counter-sniper system as an example to concretely emphasize the value of such features. © 2006 IEEE.

An innovative meta-search engine named WebFusion has been presented. the search system learns the expertness of every particular underlying search engine in a certain category based on the users' preferences according to an analysis of click-through behavior. In addition, an intelligent re-ranking method based on ordered weighted averaging (OWA) was introduced. the re-ranking method was used to fuse the results' scores of the underlying search engines. Independently, a progressive application of evolutionary computing to optimize Boolean search queries in crisp and fuzzy information retrieval systems was investigated, evaluated in laboratory environment and presented. In this paper we propose an incorporation of these two innovative recent methods founding an advanced Internet search application.

Partitioning constitutes one of the most critical challenges a distributed virtual environment needs to handle and is related to the efficient assignment of the existing entities of the virtual world to the available resources of the system. the efficient partitioning arises from the need of high consistency maintenance among participating users' view, as virtual reality applications are characterized by the high degree of realism they aim to achieve. To the direction of partitioning algorithms, a lot of work has been done, which has been more intense due to the evolution of network technologies and the familiarization of users with virtual reality systems. this paper presents a partitioning approach, which is based on the degree of interaction of each virtual object and the behavior of the participating users, in terms of moving trends, which is usually directed by the actions they can perform on the surrounding objects. In particular, the partitioning takes place when the virtual world contains only objects, in the sense that no avatars are yet connected and objects' attributes are handled as indicators for avatars' future behavior in the system. this prediction of avatars' behavior based on objects' attributes defines the initial partitioning of the virtual space.

Contour mapping is a crucial part of many wireless sensor network applications. Many efforts have been made to avoid collecting data from all the sensors in the network and producing maps at the sink, which is proven to be inefficient. the existing approaches (often aggregation based), however, suffer from heavy transmission traffic and incur large computational overheads on each sensor node. We propose Iso-Map, an energy-efficient protocol for contour mapping, which builds contour maps based solely on the reports collected from intelligently selected "isoline nodes" in wireless sensor networks. Iso-Map achieves high-quality contour mapping while significantly reducing the generated traffic from O(n) to O(radicn), where n is the total number of sensor nodes in the field. the per-node computation overhead is also restrained as a constant. We conduct comprehensive trace-driven simulations to verify this protocol, and demonstrate that Iso-Map outperforms the previous approaches in the sense that it produces contour maps of high fidelity with significantly reduced energy cost.

It is unclear if and how collaboratories have enhanced distributed scientific collaboration. Furthermore, little is known in the way of design strategies to support such collaboration. Based on a survey and follow-up interviews with CiteSeer users, we present four novel implications for designing the CiteSeer collaboratory. First, visualize query-based social networks to identify scholarly communities of interest. Second, provide online collaborative tool support for upstream stages of scientific collaboration. third, support activity awareness for staying cognizant of online scientific activities. Aimed to lack of incarnating the contents of driving knowledge in the distributed vehicle driving simulator (VDS), such as road sign, Highway Code and driving skill, this paper brings forward the framework of driving knowledge expert system based on WEB, assorts the driving knowledge, and constructs driving knowledge database which may interface timely. thus, the driving knowledge can be melted in the process of virtual driving. therefore we can not only learn driving knowledge through expert system of driving knowledge, but also experience the feeling of driving on the real road during the process of virtual driving.
