Cloud computing aims at outsourcing data and applications hosting and at charging clients on a per-usage basis. these data and applications may be packaged in virtual machines (VM), which are themselves hosted by nodes, i.e. physical machines. Consequently, several frameworks have been designed to manage VMs on pools of nodes. Unfortunately, most of them do not efficiently address a common objective of cloud providers: maximizing system utilization while ensuring the quality of service (QoS). the main reason is that these frameworks schedule VMs in a static way and/or have a centralized design. In this article, we introduce a framework that enables to schedule VMs cooperatively and dynamically in distributed systems. We evaluated our prototype through simulations, to compare our approach with the centralized one. Preliminary results showed that our scheduler was more reactive. As future work, we plan to investigate further the scalability of our framework, and to improve reactivity and fault-tolerance aspects.

Scheduling and load balancing are fundamental issues for deploying applications on parallel and distributed systems. Static and dynamic techniques, deterministic and stochastic methods have been researched to tackle the hard problem of achieving the minimum span and the optimal load balancing, making the best use of parallel and distributed systems by maintaining the resources busy and minimizing energy consumption. Although research has been done for years and years, namely for static scheduling and dynamic load balancing, these are old but very timely topics of research in the era of multicore computers and cloud computing. New challenges arise with the increased interest in applications with real-time constraints, the continuous growth of algorithms complexity and sophistication of applications, and the heterogeneity of systems and the diversity of their conditions of operation. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

the Internet of things holds huge promises to enhance collaboration in multiple application domains. By bringing Internet connectivity to everyday objects and environments it promotes ubiquitous access to information and integration with third-party systems. Further, connected "things" can be used as physical interfaces to enable users to cooperate leveraging multiple devices via parallel and distributed actions. Yet creating prototypes of IoT systems is a complex task for non-experts because it requires dealing with multi-layered hardware and software infrastructures. We introduce RapIoT, a software toolkit that facilitates prototyping IoT systems providing an integrated set of developer tools. Our solution abstracts low-level details and communication protocols allowing developers to focus on the application logic, facilitating rapid prototyping. RapIoT supports the development of collaborative applications by enabling the definition of high-level data types primitives. RapIoT primitives act as a loosely-coupled interface between generic IoT devices and applications;simplifying the development of systems that make use of an ecology of devices distributed to multiple users and environments. We illustrate the potential of our toolkit by presenting the development process of a IoT system for crowd-sourcing of air quality data. We conclude discussing strength and limitations of our platform highlighting further possible uses for collaborative applications.

the distributed computing scenario is rapidly evolving for integrating self-organizing and dynamic wireless networks. Unreliable failure detectors are classical mechanisms which provide information about process failures and can help systems to cope with the high dynamism of these networks. A number of failure detection algorithms has been proposed so far;nonetheless, most of them assume a global knowledge about the membership as well as a fully communication connectivity;additionally, they are timer-based, requiring that eventually some bound on the message transmission will hold. these assumptions are no longer appropriate to the new scenario. this paper presents a new failure detector protocol which implements a new class of detectors, namely. lozenge S-M, which adapts the properties of the lozenge S class to a dynamic network with an unknown membership. It has the interesting feature to be time-free, so that it does not rely on timers to detect failures;moreover, it tolerates mobility of nodes and message losses.

this paper shows how to use cloud computing to solve N-body problem. It presents an idea and implementation of cloud service based on Windows Azure Platform. Clients can access cloud service via Internet over HTTP protocol. they create computation tasks supplying simulation parameters such as number of steps, time step and XML file with body definitions (initial position, mass and velocity). Presented solution uses Barnes-Hut Algorithm (based on adaptive oct tree) to reduce computation complexity form N x N to N log N. All body interactions are computed in parallel, on worker nodes in cloud.

Modern neural networks require long training to reach decent performance on massive datasets. One common approach to speed up training is model parallelization, where large neural networks are split across multiple devices. However, different device placements of the same neural network lead to different training times. Most of the existing device placement solutions treat the problem as sequential decisionmaking by traversing neural network graphs and assigning their neurons to different devices. this work studies the impact of neural network graph traversal orders on device placement. In particular, we empirically study how different graph traversal orders of neural networks lead to different device placements, which in turn affects the training time of the neural network. Our experiment results show that the best graph traversal order depends on the type of neural networks and their computation graphs features. In this work, we also provide recommendations on choosing effective graph traversal orders in device placement for various neural network families to improve the training time in model parallelization.
