Nowadays with rapid evolution of high-performance computing systems it’s becoming essential to have tools to simplify development of efficient portable parallel programs for these systems. Fragmented programming is a technology where parallel program is represented as a collection of pieces of data (data fragments) and computations on these pieces (computation fragments), able to be tuned to the resources of a computing system and automatically provide such facilities as dynamic load balancing. Didal is a distributed data library to support development of efficient parallel fragmented programs on distributed memory supercomputers. the library contains facilities for data partitioning, distribution and load balancing. In this paper foundations of the library are explained and applicability of the library is demonstrated with Particle-in-Cell (PIC) method implementation, which shows performance comparable to conventional parallel programming tools. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

To minimize interference in LTE networks, several inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) techniques have been introduced. Among them, semi-static ICIC offers a balanced trade-off between applicability and system performance. the power allocation per resource block and cell is adapted in the range of seconds according to the load in the system. An open issue in the literature is the question how fast the adaptation should be performed. this leads basically to a trade-off between system performance and feasible computation times of the associated power allocation problems. In this work, we close this open issue by studying the impact that different durations of update times of semi-static ICIC have on the system performance. We conduct our study on realistic scenarios considering also the mobility of mobile terminals. Secondly, we also consider the implementation aspects of a semi-static ICIC. We introduce a very efficient implementation on general purpose graphic processing units, harnessing the parallel computing capability of such devices. We show that the update periods have a significant impact on the performance of cell edge terminals. Additionally, we present a graphic processing unit (GPU) based implementation which speeds up existing implementations up to a factor of 92x. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Shrinker: Improving Live Migration of Virtual Clusters over WANs with distributed Data Deduplication and Content-Based Addressing

Live virtual machine migration is a powerful feature of virtualization technologies. It enables efficient load balancing, reduces energy consumption through dynamic consolidation, and makes infrastructure maintenance transparent to users. While live migration is available across wide area networks with state of the art systems, it remains expensive to use because of the large amounts of data to transfer, especially when migrating virtual clusters rather than single virtual machine instances. As evidenced by previous research, virtual machines running identical or similar operating systems have significant portions of their memory and storage containing identical data. We propose Shrinker, a live virtual machine migration system leveraging this common data to improve live virtual cluster migration between data centers interconnected by wide area networks. Shrinker detects memory pages and disk blocks duplicated in a virtual cluster to avoid sending multiple times the same content over WAN links. Virtual machine data is retrieved in the destination site with distributed content-based addressing. We implemented a prototype of Shrinker in the KVM hypervisor and present a performance evaluation in a distributed environment. Experiments show that it reduces both total data transferred and total migration time.

In this work, we introduce and study a set of tree-based algorithms for resources allocation considering group dependencies between their parameters. Real world distributed and high-performance computing systems often operate under conditions of the resources availability uncertainty caused by uncertainties of jobs execution, inaccuracies in runtime predictions and other global and local utilization events. In this way we can observe an availability over time function for each resource and use it as a scheduling parameter. As a single parallel job usually occupies a set of resources, they shape groups with common probabilities of usage and release events. the novelty of the proposed approach is an efficient algorithm considering groupings of resources by the common availability probability for the resources’ co-allocation. the proposed algorithm combines dynamic programming and greedy methods for the probability-based multiplicative knapsack problem with a tree-based branch and bounds approach. Simulation results and analysis are provided to compare different approaches, including greedy and brute force solution. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

One approach to fully exploit the potential of Cloud technologies consists in leveraging on the Autonomic computing paradigm. It could be exploited in order to put in place reconfiguration strategies spanning the whole protocol stack, starting from the infrastructure and then going up to platform/application level protocols. On the other hand, the very base for the design and development of Cloud oriented Autonomic Managers is represented by monitoring sub-systems, able to provide audit data related to any layer within the stack. In this article we present the approach that has been taken while designing and implementing the monitoring sub-system for the Cloud-TM FP7 project, which is aimed at realizing a self-adapting, Cloud based middleware platform providing transactional data access to generic customer applications.

An increasing number of telescopes are being built to provide multi-band data of celestial objects, which is indispensable to astronomical research. the amount of collected observation data, however, have put tremendous pressure on computing systems. Moreover, with the development of the observation equipment, the number of astronomical catalogs that telescopes generated per day keeps increasing rapidly. In this paper, we propose a distributed cone search indexing system (DCSIS) for Multi-Band Astronomical Catalogs among multi-band astronomical catalogs to solve this problem. Major contributions of DCSIS include defining new meta file format for astronomical catalogs, achieving scalability and parallelism for cone search, and the ability to flexibly add data to index system. Evaluations are performed on the Tianhe-1A supercomputer to showcase DCSIS' scalability for large scale deployment, the results of which show that DCSIS reduce the response time of Multi-band cone search into a tolerant range.

Mobile platform has been widely used in social computing and networking thanks to its powerful computing and sensing ability. Various mobile sensing frameworks have been developed to facilitate the human participation in social environment. However, problems exist in current solutions such as how to maintain large number of participants to run long-term real social projects. We propose a new sensing paradigm called Volunteer Sensing to provide a suitable framework, which reduces the participants duty and enlarge the usage of resources.

the security of cloud computing data centers is an important issue. In recent years, some schemes of encryption and authentication based on hierarchical identity-based key management systems have been developed. However, these schemes did not consider the case when PKG (Private Key Generator) went down. In this paper, we proposed an identity-based key management scheme for configurable hierarchical cloud computing environment. the proposed scheme requires fewer computations on encryption, and authentication, and it also provides efficient key reconstruction in case of PKG failures. As a result, the scheme proposed in this paper can reduce the key reconstructing cost efficiently on cloud computing data center.
