On non-randomness of the permutation after RC4 key scheduling

Here we study a weakness of the RC4 Key Scheduling Algorithm (KSA) that has already been noted by Mantin and Mironov. Consider the RC4 permutation S of N (usually 256) bytes and denote it by SN after the KSA. Under reasonable assumptions we present a simple proof that each permutation byte after the KSA is significantly biased (either positive or negative) towards many values in the range 0,...,N - 1. these biases are independent of the secret key and thus present an evidence that the permutation after the KSA can be distinguished from random permutation without any assumption on the secret key. We also present a detailed empirical study over Mantin's work when the theoretical formulae vary significantly from experimental results due to repetition of short keys in RC4. Further, it is explained how these results can be used to identify new distinguishers for RC4 keystream. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Over the past five years a number of algorithms decoding some well-studied error-correcting codes far beyond their "error-correcting radii" have been developed. these algorithms, usually termed as listdecoding algorithms, originated with a list-decoder for Reed-Solomon codes [36, 17], and were soon extended to decoders for algebraic Geometry codes [33, 17] and also to some number-theoretic codes [12, 6, 16]. In addition to their enhanced decoding capability, these algorithms enjoy the benefit of being conceptually simple, fairly general [16], and are capable of exploiting soft-decision information in algebraic decoding [24]. this article surveys these algorithms and highlights some of these features. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Concurrent error detection schemes in digital systems are often based upon error-detecting codes. In [9], we presented a methodology for encoding the states of sequential machines using convolutional codes for on-line detection of sequencing errors. In conjunction with this methodology, we defined an equivalence relation on convolutional codes that exhaustively characterizes the possible transient error detection capabilities and complexities of sequential machine realizations based upon convolutional codes. In this paper, we determine the number of equivalence classes of (n, k, 1) convolutional codes generated by minimal encoders requiring k memory elements and provide a procedure for generating representatives from each equivalence class. © 1991, Springer Verlag.
