this paper investigates discretization chattering effects in a distributed-parameter process governed by the diffusion PDE and equipped with a sliding-mode-based boundary controller. the collocated measurement is sampled in time and the boundary control signal is applied through a zero-order-hold element. the limit cycle modes constituting the chattering effects are determined exactly by exploiting the difference equation method, yielding their period and spatially dependent amplitude. simulation results show that the theoretically determined limit cycle modes occur in the closed-loop system.

the increased number of distributed generation sources in distribution networks in recent years has emphasized the importance of their accurate and computationally efficient modelling. the development of efficient models becomes more difficult and complex with the introduction of novel controllers that aim to support the grid, often emulating the operation of passive circuit elements. One of such controllers has been recently proposed that emulates the operation of an admittance to support the voltage at the point of the converter grid connection. In this paper, an aggregate model of distributed energy resources controlled using virtual admittance approach and connected in parallel is derived. the resemblance of the controller to classical circuit elements is used to obtain an equivalent circuit for each converter including its controller part and the distribution line connecting it to the main grid. then, circuit analysis techniques are applied to synthesize the aggregate model of all the parallel converters in the network, simplifying the assessment of their combined effect on the rest of the network and reducing the computational burden. simulation results from Matlab and its SimPowerSystems toolbox are used to validate the accuracy of the proposed model. © 2023 IEEE.

We present an automated method to generate synthetic contrast-enhanced mammography cases with simulated microcalcification clusters. this method accounts for existing textures in the breast, with the simulated clusters inserted in the low-energy image. In parallel, potential mass-like enhancement is modelled from real values in the recombined image. the same deep learning model was trained with different amounts and ratios of real and synthetic data. When trained with real data only, malignant masses are more often correctly detected and classified than malignant microcalcification clusters. the addition of synthetic data with simulated clusters during training could increase detection sensitivity for all types of malignant lesions and maintained similar levels of AUC for classification. this enhanced performance was consistent on both internal and external test sets. these findings demonstrate the potential applicability of synthetic data to enhance deep learning models, especially when real data are scarce or imbalanced.

Vector-symbolic architectures (VSAs) express data structures with an arbitrary complexity and perform symbolic computations on them by exploiting high-dimensional distributed representations and associated key operations. VSAs typically use dense random vectors, aka hypervectors, to represent atomic symbols that can be combined into compound symbols by multiplicative binding and additive superposition operators. For instance, a VSA-based neural encoder can bind two atomic symbols, and further superpose a set of such bound symbols-all by distributed vectors that have the same dimension. Nevertheless, decoding such an additive-multiplicative vector, to the atomic symbols from which it is built, is not a trivial task. Recently, a solution based on resonator networks was proposed to iteratively factorize one of the bound symbols. After finding the factorization, it is explained away by subtracting it from the superposition. this explaining away, however, causes noise amplification that limits the number of symbols that can be reliably decoded in large problem sizes. Here, we present novel methods that efficiently decode VSA-based data structures consisting of multiplicative binding and additive superposition of symbols. We expand the pure sequential explaining away approach by performing multiple decodings in parallel using a dedicated query sampler. Compared to the baseline resonator network, this mix of sequential and parallel decoding retrieves up to 8x more additive components from larger problems in synthetic and real-world experiments.

In light of the great transition toward renewable energy generation, islanded microgrids are offering a wide opportunity to reach this aim. Hence, power sharing strategies of parallel distributed generation sources are becoming an interesting research point. Traditional droop control is the fundamental decentralized method to reach proper sharing of active and reactive power. Yet, in case of unequal values of the interconnecting line impedances, reactive power sharing errors become remarkable. To resolve this issue, a decentralized power sharing method is suggested in this paper. the chosen microgrid is a multi-Point of Common Coupling (PCC), unlike the majority of research works, which consider mono PCC microgrids. In this paper, synchronization, load variation, communication delay and communication interruption are considered and proved by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink. © 2023 IEEE.

We present a distribution matching architecture aimed at low-complexity probabilistic shaping. the scheme operates by combining blocks of bits, generated in parallel by multiple binary distribution matchers, and mapping them to blocks of symbols from a non-binary alphabet. the proposed architecture constitutes a block-based generalization of the bit-level distribution matching (BL-DM) method. Namely, BL-DM corresponds to the particular case wherein single-bit blocks are used. While the computational complexity of our proposed scheme is effectively independent of the block size, larger block sizes can be used to realize a wider range of shaped output distributions, and in turn lead to an improved shaping performance. We demonstrate this benefit in our numerical simulations, which show that by using an increasingly larger block size, a lower per-shaped-symbol energy can be realized across all shaping rates and output blocklengths.

this paper presents an approach to the problem of collaborative collision avoidance of autonomous inland ships. We propose a distributed model predictive control algorithm that allows ships to negotiate their intention to collaboratively avoid collisions directly. Furthermore, a new method is introduced to better shape ships' behavior in order to follow traffic regulations. the simulation results illustrate that the proposed algorithm could significantly increase ship safety navigation. Moreover, it also shows that the solution proposed by our algorithm complies with waterway traffic regulations except in complex situations when other safe solutions are negotiated. Improved monitoring towards understanding of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and occupant exposures has become critical for commercial buildings, and a principal public health concern during the current pandemic. Here, we tested IEQ patterns within an industrial factory converted to hybrid spaces for offices, labs, and light manufacturing, serviced by a combination of HVAC, radiant slab, and high-volume, low speed (HVLS) fans. Multi-factor sensors measuring air speed alongside temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide (CO2) were run in parallel with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, examining multiple boundary conditions to investigate opportunities for HVLS fans to improve workplace safety and well-being.

this paper presents the modelling and a formal verification approach of energy management control systems for microgrids that are subject to unknown demand and uncertainties in the availability of renewable energy sources. the main objective of this study is to develop a management system for a microgrid composed of renewable and non-renewable energy sources, specifying the different possible modes. A supervisory control method is proposed to autonomously control and monitor a microgrid and maintain more stable energy flows with maximum utilization of available resources. A timed automata network model of the microgrid has been developed by modeling the dynamics of components such as PV, BESS, diesel generator, load, and controller. Possible operating modes in the microgrid between sources and load are derived and classified into allowed and unallowed operating modes. Verification of the designed microgrid models was performed using simulation and formal methods. the advantageous performance of the proposed strategy is illustrated via a numerical example. the world is currently witnessing a rapid transformation in the production and utilization of electrical energy. the traditional centralized generation model for electric power is swiftly evolving into a more decentralized system, known as distributed Generation (DG), which incorporates renewable energy sources situated closer to end-users. this shift towards DG has paved the way for the emergence of grid-forming converters, which play a pivotal role in enhancing voltage and frequency stability within microgrids (MGs) and isolated applications. this transformation is primarily driven by the increasing prevalence of inverter-based energy resources. In isolated MGs, ensuring high power quality becomes a paramount concern due to the presence of potentially disruptive loads and the risk of resonance issues arising from the integration of multiple electronically interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs) and loads. this study focuses on assessing the performance of the Zero Harmonic Distortion (ZHD) control method when applied to grid-forming converters in both stand-alone and parallel operation modes. the distinctive feature of this converter lies in its inherent ability to generate a sinusoidal voltage source without the need for capacitive filtering components, which can adversely affect cost, efficiency, and size while potentially contributing to resonance problems. this is achieved through a judicious combination of harmonic cancellation within a three-winding transformer and the utilization of Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (SHE PWM) dismissing a closed-loop control structure. simulation results presented in this work demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the ZHD grid-forming converter. © 2023 IEEE.
