In this paper, we describe and reflect on our experiences building a full-featuredweb3ddesign tool for architects and structural engineers: the Structure And Form Analysis System (SAFAS). the SAFAS intends to tighten the design cycle for space frame structures by coupling an interactive 3ddesign interface with a structural simulation server. In this way, users can iteratively design, evaluate and compare their structures with real forces, loads anddisplacements. the client design tool was implemented in Java using a Model-View-Controller pattern, using the open-source Xj3d toolkit as the 3d 'View'. We describe the design and realization of a full-featuredweb3d User Interface and application anddemonstrate that the use of software design patterns provides improved compatibility and code re-use across platforms. We reflect on this experience andthe fuzzy boundary between 'application' and 'general-purpose' scene graph standards.

despite many advances in mesh compression methods within the past two decades, there is still no consensus about a standardized compact mesh encoding format for 3dweb applications. In order to facilitate the design of a future platform-independent solution, this paper investigates the crucial trade-off between compactness of the compressed representation anddecompression time. Our case study evaluates different encoding formats, combined with various transmission bandwidths, using different client devices. Results indicate that good compression rates, and at the same time a fast decompression, can be achieved by exploiting existing browser features and by minimizing the complexity of operations that have to be performed inside the JavaScript layer. Our findings are summarized in concrete recommendations for future standards.

We present webGLStudio - a pipeline for the creation and editing of high-quality 3d scenes using webGL. the pipeline features a 3d Scene-Graph rendering engine;an interactive scene editor allowing detailed setup and configuration of assets in real-time;a web-based asset manager;and a stand-alone rendering module ready to embedded in target applications. We further present a series of implementational details discovered to overcome limitations of the web browser context to enable realistic rendering and performance. the principal contribution of this work to the graphics community is the methodology used to take advantage of several unique aspects of Javascript when used as a 3d programming language;andthe demonstration of possibilities involved in real-time editing of the parameters of materials, shaders and post-processing effects, in order for the user/artist to create a 3d scene as desired.
