the shift in production techniques from film to digital is creating a large amount of new data and metadata. Without the requirement to control the usage of expensive film, and digital storage relatively inexpensive, production companies are free to digitally record every aspect of a scene. While the principal modality of recorded data is still image and sound (as these will form the final result of the production), they are by no means the only digital data recorded. In modern productions, a large variety of external data is recorded simultaneously, in order to assist the post-production process. this data includes 3d representations of the set, recorded by laser scan; light source information, recorded by one or more light domes; position and movement through time of the various cameras on set, including data on pitch, yaw, and zoom; and movement of actors within the scene. the combined information from all these sources results in a large amount of data, typically measured in Terabytes, for as little as a single day's filming. thus an ability to rapidly view and assess the data is paramount.

Terrestrial Laser Scanning is a very useful technique for cave studies. this surveying method creates point clouds with high detail levels for 3d model generation, which is indeed useful for either reconstruction, geomorphological studies or virtual visits of caves. the present work generated a 3d model of a cave chamber and developed a framework for 3d data visualization on the web. Identifying geomorphological structures is one of the goals of this project. the generated 3d-mesh represents the surface model of the cave chamber, which is important to study its geomorphological features. A topological structure of the 3d-mesh was implemented to get an efficient algorithm to help determining stalactites. the recognition and positioning of cave stalactites can provide information on hidden cave features responsible for cave geomorphology. the possibility to publish 3d data on the web is of particular interest for the geospatial field. For this reason, it was decided to make the cave model available in the web by developing a 3d graphical interface where users can navigate and interact with the three-dimensional models of the cave. For this web framework, X3d, webGL and X3dOM were used. Such solution does not require any additional plug-ins or components.

3dTV can be considered as the biggest technical revolution in TV content creation since the black and white to color transition. However, the big commercial success of current TV market has been produced around the Smart TV concept. Smart TVs connect the TV set to the web and introduce the main home multimedia display in the app world, social networks and content related interactive services. Now, this digital convergence can become the driver for boosting the success of 3dTV industry. In fact, the integration of stereoscopic TV production and web3d seems to be the next natural step of the hybrid broadband-broadcast services. We propose in this paper a general reference model to allow the convergence of 3dTV and 3d web by defining a general architecture and some extensions of current Smart TV concepts as well as the related standards.

Currently, 3d rendering is accessible within web browsers through open standards such as webGL, X3d, and X3dOM. At the same time, there is wealth of mature desktop software which comprises algorithms, data structures, user interfaces, databases, etc. It is a challenge to reuse such desktop software using the web visualization resources. In response to this challenge, this article presents a novel framework, called Reweb3d, which minimizes the redevelopment for migration of existing 3d applications to the web. the redeployed application runs on a web server. Reweb3d captures low-level graphic calls including geometry, texture, and shader programs. the captured content is then served as a webGL-enabled web page that conveys full interactivity to the client. By splitting the graphics pipeline between client and server, the workload can be balanced, and high-level implementation details and 3d content are hidden. the feasibility of Reweb3d has been tested with applications which use OpenSceneGraph as rendering platform. the approach shows good results for applications with large data sets (e.g. geodata), but is less suited for applications intensive in animations (e.g. games).

this paper summarizes the results of a teaching experience held at the Universita Ca' Foscari in Venice where 50 students of the Computer Science undergraduate degree program were involved in the design of complex web applications for improving the environmental awareness of teachers and students. the implementation of the web applications required to mix different technologies, including HTML5, CSS, Javascript and asynchronous communication with a back-end for retrieving dynamic data to display. the X3dOM framework was chosen for implementing the 3d component of the applications, because of its capability of integration with the other web technologies and of delivering 3d content on a web browser without requiring a dedicated plugin, maximizing the number of the potential users. the design and the implementation of the web applications were an interesting occasion for experimenting production workflows and for measuring the points of strengths and the drawbacks of the framework. After the conclusion of the project the groups of students filled in a questionnaire where they expressed their opinions, derived from the implementation experience. the results confirmed the usefulness of X3dOM but evidenced also a number of drawbacks that should be considered for the evolution of the framework and the related tools. With the advent of webGL, plugin-free hardware-accelerated interactive 3d graphics has finally arrived in all major web browsers. webGL is an imperative solution that is tied to the functionality of rasterization APIs. Consequently, its usage requires a deeper understanding of the rasterization pipeline. In contrast to this stands a declarative approach with an abstract description of the 3d scene. We strongly believe that such approach is more suitable for the integration of 3d into HTML5 and related web technologies, as those concepts are well-known by millions of web developers and therefore crucial for the fast adoption of 3d on the web. Hence, in this paper we explore the options for new declarative ways of incorporating 3d graphics directly into HTML to enable its use on any web page. We present declarative 3d principles that guide the work of the declarative 3d for the web Architecture W3C Community Group and describe the current state of the fundamentals to this initiative. Finally, we draw an agenda for the next development stages of declarative 3d for the web.

In this paper, we present a specification of a RESTful based networking interface for the efficient exchange and manipulation of visual computing resources. It is designed to include web applications by using modern web-technology such as Typed Arrays and webSockets. the specification maps internal structures and data containers to two types, Elements and Attributes, which can be queried for a description or their content. Two modes of communication are defined, one through HTTP requests, where we use HTTP operations to manipulate Elements and Attributes or request their data in a stateless fashion, the other through webSockets to enable a push-based communication. A key idea to this interface is that we use MIME types to specify the way data is to be exchanged in. When requesting data, the user may supply a hint or type in which the data is expected to be delivered in, which enables us to write web-applications which can process already converted data that would not have been web-friendly before. To have such a mode of operation, we also present a table of extracted basic data types usable for requesting data conversion, which are derived from the Typed Array specification and shared across shader languages.

Current web 3d technologies are not yet fully exploiting the modern design patterns for accessing online resources such as REST. XML3dRepo is a novel fusion of XML3d and 3d Repo. XML3d is an open source extension to HTML that supports interactive 3d graphics inwebGL-enabled browsers. 3d Repo is a recent versioning framework for 3d assets that provides raw access to its NoSQL database. XML3dRepo, in turn, is a server-side combination of the two technologies that stores a unified file format independent representation of 3d scenes in its repository but exposes a RESTful API for a deeper integration with other services using a variety of encodings selected between by the client application. First, we outline the overall architecture of the system and provide a simple yet powerful API definition that we believe has the potential to accommodate crowdsourcing of 3d models in the future. Next, we describe different 3d data encoding strategies for the web and evaluate several of these for their speed and efficiency in our open source prototype implementation of the proposed API. We conclude that none of the formats strike the right balance between the number of requests, decoding overhead and the compression achieved making the proposed flexible architecture even more compelling.

the engineering of the next generation of nuclear power plants requires to take into account the whole plant lifecycle: engineering, building, operating, maintaining and decommissioning. Satisfying stronger and stronger safety regulations requires the ability to trace any engineering information during the whole life of the nuclear power plant: one hundred years. the french electricity company Électricité de France (EdF) just started a Plant Lifecycle Management (PLM) project in order to design new (or improve existing) models, methodologies and tools able to ensure that these requirements are fulfilled. Among all the information related to a power facility, 3d data aims, in this context, at providing not only the as-designed (CAd) but also the as-built representation of the geometry of the facility components (HVAC, cable trays, pipes, valves etc.) as well as their relative position. With this project, the strategic goal of EdF is to ensure to keep the control over 3d data along the whole power plant data lifecycle. the nuclear industry misses a suitable standardized and open 3d model intended to this purpose. In this paper, we introduce a macro-procedural model intended to represent nuclear power plant 3d data and we present the first architectural design decisions and experiments.

Collaborative modelling has become more important in the last few years, especially now that mobile devices show processing power to support 3d modelling in real-time. Current mobile networks, such as 3G and LTE, unfortunately are not as fast as traditional wired internet and have higher latency. the problem with collaborative modelling using triangle meshes is that complex models are slow to synchronize and require large network resources depending on the amount of data needed to update a model. Synchronizing thousands of triangles over the network between all participating users can introduce substantial lag between the transactions, especially on over-the air networks, making fine grained and rapid updates at interactive rates hard to achieve. In contrast the BlobTree is based on combining skeletal primitives and sketched-shapes using standard CSG and various blending operators. Using this methodology complex models can be encoded with a smaller memory footprint than mesh based systems, thus allowing for less traffic across a network to synchronize two or more workstations with one model. As a result fine grained and rapid updates are possible, improving the visual communication between all participating users.
