Recently, modern web browser became capable of supporting powerful, interactive 3d graphics both via the low-level, imperative API of webGL as well as via a high-level, declarative approach like XML3d. the obvious next step (particularly with respect to mobile platforms) is to combine video from the real world with matched virtual content - Augmented or Mixed Reality (AR/MR). However, AR requires extensive image or video processing, feature detection and tracking, and applying the results to 3d rendering - all of which is hard to implement in a web context. In this paper we present a novel approach that encapsulates low-level image-processing and AR operations into re-usable high-level XML3d/Xflow components that are part of the HTML-5 dOM. A web developer can then easily and flexibly arrange these components into (possibly complex) processing flow-graphs without having to worry about the internal computations and the structure of these modules. Our extended Xflow implementation automatically optimizes, schedules, and synchronizes the processing of the flow graph(s) in the context of real-time 3d rendering. Finally, we provide an integration model that greatly simplifies building AR applications for the browser. We demonstrate this with several simple AR and image processing applications using a polyfill implementation working in all modern browsers and evaluate the performance. Finally, we show how the declarative framework can be optimized with respect to performance and usability using parallelization with web Workers and RiverTrail.

Content description is an important step in multimedia indexing and search applications. While, in the past, a large volume of research has been devoted to image, audio, and video data, 3d scenes have received relatively little attention. In this paper, we present a methodology for the automatic description of 3d scenes, based on textual metadata but also their shape, structure, color, animation, lighting, viewpoint, texture and interactivity content. Our system accepts 3d scenes as input, written in the open X3d standard for web graphics, and automatically builds MPEG-7 descriptions. In order to fully model 3d content, we draw upon our previous work, where we have extended the MPEG-7 standard with multiple 3d-specific descriptors. Here, we further extend MPEG-7, and present our approach for automatic descriptor extraction. We take advantage of the fact that both X3d and MPEG-7 are written in XML, and base our automatic extraction system on eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT). We have incorporated our system into a large-scale platform for VR advertising over the web, where the benefits of automatic annotation can be twofold: authors are offered better access to stored 3d material, for editing and reuse, and end users can be provided with advertisements whose semantic content matches their profile.

Software maps - linking rectangular 3d-Treemaps, software system structure, and performance indicators - are commonly used to support informed decision making in software-engineering processes. A key aspect for this decision making is that software maps provide the structural context required for correct interpretation of these performance indicators. In parallel, source code repositories and collaboration platforms are an integral part of today's software-engineering tool set, but cannot properly incorporate software maps since implementations are only available as stand-alone applications. Hence, software maps are 'disconnected' from the main body of this tool set, rendering their use and provisioning overly complicated, which is one of the main reasons against regular use. We thus present a web-based rendering system for software maps that achieves both fast client-side page load time and interactive frame rates even with large software maps. We significantly reduce page load time by efficiently encoding hierarchy and geometry data for the net transport. Apart from that, appropriate interaction, layouting, and labeling techniques as well as common image enhancements aid evaluation of project-related quality aspects. Metrics provisioning can further be implemented by predefined attribute mappings to simplify communication of project specific quality aspects. the system is integrated into dashboards to demonstrate how our web-based approach makes software maps more accessible to many different stakeholders in software-engineering projects.

Experienced surgeons mostly face fewer complications and have more control precision in a surgical procedure than the novice trainees. the residents and novice students (trainees) are trained through watch-and-learn basis during real surgeries performed by the experienced surgeons (attending physicians). the human patient simulators are also used for training in so many medical fields including surgery. Plus, several 3d e-learning portals are used for surgical training to boost the learning performance of the trainees. Even though there are many tools and methods used in surgical training which provide extensive hands-on training experience to trainees, they still require suggestions, guidance and surgical maneuvering techniques from experienced surgeons to perform a complex surgery. But the current training methods and tools are constrained due to the limited availability of experienced surgeons in training rooms. the existing e-learning systems provide a simple 3d simulation of the surgery with less interactive features and almost no real-time comments from experienced surgeons. In contrast to the existing 3d e-learning portals, we propose a real-time interactive 3d web based environment that will allow the trainees to compare their surgical procedures in training to that of the experienced surgeons through a website built on webGL and X3d frameworks. We also propose a new cloud computing architecture to reduce the resource usage on the client-side and optimize the real-time updates through webGL. the proposed architecture will be able to receive real-time updates from trainees and experienced surgeons. As a precedent of our research in surgical training, we show a real-time simulation of intubation procedure which was built using the X-ray computed tomography (CT scan) with intubation simulator. We measure some important parameters in surgical training like angle of the surgical tool and distance between the tool and softer body part in the intubation path. Final

In this paper we describe the design and the evaluation of a web3d application for increasing the environmental awareness. the application has been designed in the context of an initiative of the Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, named Sustainable Ca' Foscari, aimed at improving the environmental impact of the institution. the communication to students, teachers and technical personnel is an important part of the project, realized mainly through the institutional web portal. the goal of this application is to enhance further the web communication channel, stimulating the comprehension and the interest of the users for the environmental themes, showing the improvements obtained through the years in the different thematic areas. the application has been designed for providing a rich and engaging environment to a wide audience, taking advantage of the recent technical novelties for the seamless integration of a 3d environment into a web page, without requiring additional plugins. the web3d application guides the user through a metaphorical representation of the 10 thematic areas considered by the University initiative, permitting the users to access dynamically the data available on the server for different time spans. the web application has been tested with 48 students of the undergraduate degree in Computer Science, that at the end of the test filled in a post-test questionnaire based on closed and open questions. the results of the questionnaire, that will be discussed in the paper, show a high level of appreciation, confirming the usefulness of advanced visualization techniques for stimulating the environmental awareness. traditional collaborative rendering architecture, the front-end computes direct lighting, which imposes certain performance requirements on the front-end devices. To further reduce the front-end load in complex 3d scenes, we propose a Super-resolution Screen Space Irradiance Sampling technique (SRSSIS), which is applied to our designed architecture, a lightweight collaborative rendering system built on web3d. In our system, the back-end samples low-resolution screen-space irradiance, while the front-end implements our SRSSIS technique to reconstruct high-resolution and high-quality images. We also introduce frame interpolation in the architecture to further reduce the backend load and the transmission frequency. Moreover, we propose a self-adaptive sampling strategy to improve the robustness of super-resolution. Our experiments show that, under ideal conditions, our reconstruction performance is comparable to dLSS and FSR real-time super-resolution technology. the bandwidth consumption of our system ranges from 8% to 66% of pixel streaming at different super-resolution rates, while the back-end's computational cost is approximately 33% to 46% of pixel streaming at different super-resolution rates.

To manage increasingly massive and complicated 3d city models, a kind of 3d city model management system based on the distributed database HBase is designed in this paper. the system optimizes the stored procedures of 3d models data, which can be directly written into HBase. At the same time, in view of the fast indexing and retrieval by area of the massive 3d models, a new design for row key is proposed according to latitude and longitude. What's more, the system supports upload and download of 3d city model according to international standards such as Collada, CityGML and OBJ. We also suggest and implement 3d model visualization in the system, which is integrated into the web browser and tested with threejs and X3dOM. Finally, the above methods have been verified on the HBase cluster environment with real 3d model data. Our experimental results show that the proposed method has good feasibility and efficiency and the proposed framework can fulfil the requirements of 3d city models management.

In recent years Augmented Reality applications have become very popular for mobile devices. Anyway, creating an AR application has always been a difficult task, and a deep knowledge on the topic was required. Authoring tools have tried to simplify the problem providing a visual interface for creating applications. the interface for examination of Ming-Jen at al. [Wang et al. 2010] and the work of Jesus Gimeno et al. [J. Gimeno 2010] are some examples. despite the simple and attractive tool that web3d represents for visualization, to the best of our knowledge there are no references to any solution that combines an AR authoring tool for mobiles with a web3d interface.

this paper summarizes the results of a teaching experience held at the Università Ca' Foscari in Venice where 50 students of the Computer Science undergraduate degree program were involved in the design of complex web applications for improving the environmental awareness of teachers and students. the implementation of the web applications required to mix different technologies, including HTML5, CSS, Javascript and asynchronous communication with a back-end for retrieving dynamic data to display. the X3dOM framework was chosen for implementing the 3d component of the applications, because of its capability of integration with the other web technologies and of delivering 3d content on a web browser without requiring a dedicated plugin, maximizing the number of the potential users. the design and the implementation of the web applications were an interesting occasion for experimenting production workflows and for measuring the points of strengths and the drawbacks of the framework. After the conclusion of the project the groups of students filled in a questionnaire where they expressed their opinions, derived from the implementation experience. the results confirmed the usefulness of X3dOM but evidenced also a number of drawbacks that should be considered for the evolution of the framework and the related tools.
