In this paper, an efficient remote code execution technique is proposed to implement a storage-less sensor in the internet-of-things (IoT) paradigm. A statically installed sensor such as an environmental activity monitor includes statically compiled embedded software and only offers its pre-defined functionality. To realize a flexible code update mechanism and to optimize the use of an IoT device in terms of utilizing its various functions, we adopt the concept of remote on-demand code execution (ROCE) to implement a storage-less sensor. Instead of using conventional on-chip flash memory for an instruction code, an instruction memory is used wherein the remote storage area based on the IoT platform is virtually mapped onto the address space of the instruction memory using a dynamic address translation technique. A pervasive Internet-connected sensor enables on-demand code execution from the cloud-side remote storage resource, without the need for a direct instruction bus. the proposed storage-less approach using the remote resource as a virtual code space may be adopted to reduce the high access current and chip area overhead of an on-chip code flash memory. To reduce the access current overhead in order to retrieve the requested instruction, a small-sized RAM scratch pad is adopted for retaining the hot-spot instruction code. the experimental results show that the proposed technique reduces the energy consumption and packet delay of an IoT device for executing the remote embedded software, as well as realizing a storage-less sensor architecture.

Ensuring safe operation of autonomous vehicles requires testing them including critical combinations of obstacle configurations plus sensor and actuator inaccuracies. A method for testing inaccuracy combinations has already been published by the authors. this paper enhances the capabilities of the method by automatically collecting scenarios from physical vehicle drives that are relevant for further analysis. For such situations, a state trace including all variables of the whole planning and control system is stored together with environment information. the stored data is the input for further analysis. An implementation of this approach is demonstrated using a simulation and a full size vehicle.

networked dynamical systems are increasingly used as models for a variety of processes ranging from robotic teams to collections of genetically engineered living cells. As the complexity of these systems increases, so does the range of emer- Gent properties that they exhibit. In this work, we define a new logic called Spatial-Temporal Logic (SpaTeL) that is a unification of signal temporal logic (STL) and tree spatial superposition logic (TSSL). SpaTeL is capable of describing high-level spatial patterns that change over time, e.g.,"Power consumption in the northwest quadrant of the city drops below 100 megawatts if the power consumption in the southwest quadrant remains above 200 megawatts for two hours." We present a statistical model checking procedure that evaluates the probability with which a networked system satisfies a SpaTeL formula. We also develop a synthesis procedure that determines system parameters maximizing the average degree of satisfaction, a continuous measure that quantifies how strongly a system execution satisfies a given formula. We demonstrate our algorithms on two systems: a biochemical reaction-di usion system and a demand-side management system for a smart neighborhood. © 2015 ACM.

Due to the energy and resource constraints of the embedded Wireless sensor Networking (WSN) devices that form Low Power and Lossy Networks (LLNs), efficient support for mobile data sinks is essential. Further, such support should be fully compatible with the broad class of networking mechanisms now defined for LLN support, such as the routing protocol RPL. this paper describes the Hierarchical network of Observable devices with Itinerant Sinks Transporting data (HOIST) protocol. HOIST is designed to service LLNs using an RPL-friendly three-tier hybrid cluster-tree architecture to support sensor nodes deployed over geographically segregated areas. the mobile aspects of HOIST allow for collection from such remote fields without the need for long-distance wireless transfers, which would result in a higher level of energy drain. HOIST supports both real-time data capture and collected data retrieval. We have implemented and field-tested HOIST in a working physical system, as well as in simulation, with results indicating viability for both sparse and dense deployments of nodes under multiple, geographically constrained, uncontrolled mobility models.

An integrated approach, embracing both control and scheduling theories, is proposed to implement multiple control loops upon shared network and computational resources, where the network may additionally introduce packet losses. Each control system is first analyzed from a control-theoretic perspective in order to determine the asymptotic rate at which control signals must be computed to maintain stability and optimal performance despite network losses. Since required completion rates for control tasks are asymptotic, and network packet drops uncertain, the problem of scheduling multiple such control tasks upon shared computational resources does not map to known problems in real-time scheduling. It is therefore formalized here as a new form of periodic task scheduling problem { one in which each task has an associated asymptotic completion rate requirement. Sufficient schedulability conditions are derived, and a dynamic scheduling algorithm designed, for solving such scheduling problems. this integrated methodology thus provides an e ective way to incorporate network loss in the design of cyber-physical systems over integrated architectures. the use of this methodology is illustrated, and its efficacy demonstrated, upon an example system of five inverted pendulums. © 2015 ACM.

the automotive domain is challenged by the increasing importance of Information Technology (IT) based functions. To show the possibilities of modern IT systems, a demonstrator car was developed in RACE (Robust and Reliant Automotive Computing Environment for Future eCars) based on a completely redesigned E/E architecture, which supports the integration of mixed-criticality components and offers features like Plug&Play. this paper presents the architecture and components of this vehicle prototype, which is equipped with modern systems such as Steer-by-Wire without mechanical fallback. It was designed to support future driver assistance systems, e.g. to carry out autonomous parking maneuvers onto an inductive charging station, a task, which is hard to achieve accurately enough for a human driver. therefore, a special emphasis lies on the description of the sensor set for automated operation.

embedded system face a serious threat from physical attacks when applied in critical applications. therefore, modern systems have several integrated sensors to detect potential threats. In this paper, we put forward a new issue where these sensors can open other security loopholes. We demonstrate that sensors, which are deployed to prevent faults, can be exploited to insert effective and almost zero-overhead hardware Trojans. Two case studies are presented on Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA. the first case study exploits the in-build temperature sensor of Virtex-5 system monitors while the other exploits a user deployed sensor. Both the sensor can be used to trigger a powerful Trojan with minimal and at times zero overhead.

Rechargeable Lithium Ion Batteries (LIB) are the key components of the energy storage systems in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. In order to provide a reliable and safe source of energy for driving electric vehicles, the battery packs are controlled by a centralized Battery Management System (BMS). BMS relies on the direct measurement of electric current and voltage to estimate the battery charge conditions in order to ensure the optimum operation of individual cells and to protect them from operation outside their safe conditions. Measurement errors and uncertainties in the estimation algorithms have resulted in applying large safety factors in the design of battery cells. In this paper, an embedded optical sensor technology for direct sensing of the electrochemistry of the battery cell is demonstrated. the sensor consists of an optical fiber, encapsulated inside a battery cell, with direct interaction with the cell electrochemical environment. the development of an optical signal interrogation system is also demonstrated in this research work. the optical fiber sensor operates on the basis of the changes in the optical properties of the LIB cell electrodes, i.e., changes in optical absorption and reflection at different charge levels. the optical sensor not only shows the state of charge in battery cells but also provides information about battery aging and stabilization following charge and discharge cycles. the performance of this sensor has been tested in several conditions including partial and full charge and discharge cycles.

the role of smartphones in our life is ever-increasing. they are used to store and share sensitive data and to perform security critical operation online e.g. home banking transaction or shopping. this leads to the need for a more secure authentication process via mobile phones. Biometrics could be the solution but biometric authentication systems via mobile devices presented so far still do not provide a good trade-off between ease of use and high security level. In this paper we analyze the combination of sensor recognition (hardwaremetry) and iris recognition (biometry) in order to provide a double check of user's identity in one shot, i.e. a single photo of the eye captured by the Smartphone, without the need of additional or dedicated sensors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to combine these two aspects.

this paper proposes a multi-channel ZigBee Wireless sensor Network (WSN) with an automation monitoring system developed in-house. Monitoring is achieved using the Android NDK and SDK is used to write applications for Android embedded platforms. An access control system is included to obtain data from sensors and perform inquiries into node status. In the paper, a multi-channel architecture was used to reduce the problem of hidden terminals and enhance the packet delivery ratio (PDR).
