Performance of control loops often degrade due to various possible environmental disturbances in the control platform, like late arrival of sensor data, or corrupted readings due to transient noise. Such failures usually manifest as drops in control loop execution leading to unavailability of fresh control signals. In the existing literature, there is an absence of analytical methods which can compute the required patterns of control execution such that the performance of associated control loops remain satisfactory in the presence of such platform level timing uncertainties. We consider such platform level uncertainties as a collection of window based < m, k >-firm specifications and synthesize an < m, k >-firm based input specification for the execution patterns of the loops, so that performance can be provably ensured. Our methodology leverages Buchi automata for modeling platform uncertainties as < m, k >-firm constraints and bounded model checking approach for synthesizing < m, k > firm based input specifications for the control loops.

this paper adapts and extends the previously published hierarchical modelling approach of multifunction radars as systems that speak a language. We propose Long Short-Term Memory neural networks for learning the emitters' grammar and predicting their emissions. the approach is demonstrated using simulations of an airborne multifunction radar with three different resource management techniques of varying complexity. A comparison with simple prediction strategies shows that a huge improvement in accuracy can be achieved by using Long Short-Term Memory networks for predicting complex radar emitter behaviour. © 2019 IEEE.

In natural hazard warning systems fast decision making is vital to avoid catastrophes. Decision making at the edge of a wireless sensor network promises fast response times but is limited by the availability of energy, data transfer speed, processing and memory constraints. In this work we present a realization of a wireless sensor network for hazard monitoring based on an array of event-triggered single-channel micro-seismic sensors with advanced signal processing and characterization capabilities based on a novel co-detection technique. On the one hand we leverage an ultra-low power, threshold-triggering circuit paired with on-demand digital signal acquisition capable of extracting relevant information exactly and efficiently at times when it matters most and consequentially not wasting precious resources when nothing can be observed. On the other hand we utilize machine-learning-based classification implemented on low-power, off-the-shelf microcontrollers to avoid false positive warnings and to actively identify humans in hazard zones. the sensors' response time and memory requirement is substantially improved by quantizing and pipelining the inference of a convolutional neural network. In this way, convolutional neural networks that would not run unmodified on a memory constrained device can be executed in real-time and at scale on low-power embedded devices. A field study with our system is running on the rockfall scarp of the Matterhorn Hornligrat at 3500m a.s.l. since 08/2018.

Formation of embolisms in plant's xylem water transport vessels is considered a major cause of plant mortality due to water-stress. Passive ultrasonic acoustic emissions (AE) monitoring shows the most potential for field-quantification of embolism level. However, this requires designing energy-efficient embedded hardware for autonomous high-speed ultrasonic AE acquisition, processing, and storage. In this paper we present a piezoelectric sensor interface for triggered AE acquisition at 2 MS/s. Its design requirements were assessed by laboratory dehydration experiments on grapevine pot-plants. An embedded prototype was design and characterized. the proposed architecture enables event-based acquisition of AE within 120-550 kHz band, at 5.7 mW average power, and 717 ns wakeup-latency.

Smart home highly relies on various sensors to provide services. the quality of services is proportional of the number of sensor. Generally, smart home splits space into few specific purpose spaces such as living room, dining room or bed room. One space may set up a set of heterogeneous sensors for alarm, monitor or intelligent service. the other spaces will refer previous space to deploy similar sensors and the number of sensor may be appropriately tuned in consideration better user experience. While homogeneous and heterogeneous sensors co-work, the mutual effect severely interfere the communication among sensors and receiver device. this work aims route for sensors to receiver device to propose routing planning strategy that is based on lee's algorithm. One advantage is to obtain the shortest path. Another is to obtain the successful communication under many obstacles between sensor and receiver device. the other is to gain the parallel effect via characteristic of propagation in every direction among sensors to receiver devices. Finally, the achievements are demonstrated in simulation results of benchmarks.

Privacy preservation is critical for control information dissemination in Platoon-based Vehicular Cyber-Physical systems (PVCPS). However, the vehicular communication is vulnerable to wireless eavesdropping attack and message modification, due to broadcast nature of radio channels. In this poster, we present a secret key generation testbed for PVCPS security, which is built based on off-the-shelf autonomous robotic vehicles and TelosB wireless transceivers. A cooperative secret key agreement (CoopKey) scheme is demonstrated for encrypting/decrypting the disseminated control messages. To unify the secret key generated by the vehicles, CoopKey explores received signal strength (RSS) measurements and channel estimation on the inter-node radio channel. In addition, a Python-based user interface is also implemented to show real-time bit mismatch rate of CoopKey.

We present Deskbuddy, a vibration-based system that can track a user’s activities through their desk. Tracking sitting and other office related activities let us remind the user to have healthier working habits, as well as giving information about how office spaces are used. Many solutions have been proposed for office activity tracking, but they either require the user to wear a device, or they use cameras or microphones, which can make subjects uncomfortable. Our demo includes a small vibration sensor that sits on a table that can detect four office related activities. We capture the signal from the vibration sensor, extract features, and perform classification on the resulting features. the full functionality of the system will be shown in a video. In order for our demo to be more effective in a crowded environment, we have re-trained it to detect only typing versus not typing. © 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Proof of integrity in produced video data by surveillance cameras requires active forensic methods such as signatures, otherwise authenticity and integrity can be comprised and data becomes unusable e. g. for legal evidence. But a simple file- or stream-signature loses its validity when the stream is cut in parts or by separating data and signature. Using the principles of security in distributed systems similar to those of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (BC/DLT), a chain which consists of the frames of a video which frame hash values will be distributed among a camera sensor network is presented. the backbone of this Framechain within the camera sensor network will be a camera identity concept to ensure accountability, integrity and authenticity according to the extended CIA triad security concept. Modularity by secure sequences, autarky in proof and robustness against natural modulation of data are the key parameters of this new approach. It allows the standalone data and even parts of it to be used as hard evidence.

Extravasation is a common hazard in intravenous (IV) therapy;especially infants aged 0–2 years old are at high risk. However, in clinical practice, nursing staff are responsible for checking the injection status regularly, which leads to the risk of delayed treatment of extravasation of IV therapy in children. In this study, we propose a sensor-fusion sensing system to detect the early signs of extravasation. sensor fusion compensates for the limitation of using a single sensor, extends the measurement range, and is more resistant to environmental interference. We design an experimental platform to simulate the occurrence of extravasation and, through this demonstration, show the advantages and feasibility of the proposed concept of using hybrid sensors. © 2019 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

In this paper we propose a solution to the problems of detecting a stochastic output delay sequence characterized by a Markov chain and estimating the state of a linear system driven by Gaussian noise through an augmented delay-state dynamics. this is the model for uncertain observations resulting from losses in the propagation channel due to fading phenomena or packet dropouts that is common in wireless sensor networks, networked control systems, or remote sensing applications. the solution we propose consists of two parallel stages: a nonlinear detector, which identifies at each time instant the delay and a filtering stage. Numerical simulations show the performance of the proposed method.
