the present paper proposes a new type of layer-wise learning for multi-layered neural networks. Multi-layered neural networks have the serious problem of vanishing information, where information contained in input patterns is gradually lost, and preventing neural networks from learning input patterns. In particular, the autoencoders used in the greedy layer-wise pre-training tend to lose the original information by going through multiple layers. For this problem, we propose a new approach called "supervised semi-autoencoder" to solve the problem of vanishing information. the new method is close to the ordinary autoencoder, but the outputs are the original inputs and the corresponding targets for amplifying information in input patterns. In addition, the computational procedures are simplified by using potential learning, in which the potentiality of neurons is determined before learning, and is given as initial weights. thus, the complicated adjustment of parameters is not necessary. the method was applied to the well-known crab data set as well as the real data set of eye-tracking records. In both cases, with relatively small-sized data, neural networks could find internal representations close to those obtained by larger ones, and better generalization performance could be observed.

A dual-polarization passive bistatic radar is used to evaluate the potential benefit of cross-polarized measurements for the suppression of strong direct signal interference in the DVB-T band. the linear array antenna consists of 10 bowtie elements, 5 of which measuring horizontal and 5 vertical polarization. Two small GPS-equipped aircraft were used as targets, flying prescribed patterns. Two antenna locations were used, one in which the broadcasting transmitter was only 20° from the antenna boresight, causing strong direct signal interference, and one in which the antenna was partially shielded from the transmitter. In both polarization channels, reconstruction of the reference signal and reciprocal filtering was used to suppress interference. GPS data from the aircraft was used to find the bistatic range, Doppler, and azimuth location, and the signal to interference pluss noise ratio (SINR) at this location was measured. In addition, the azimuth inferred from GPS was compared with the direction derived from the radar measurements. We find no advantage using cross polarization, even in the case with strong direct signal interference: On average there is no significant difference between co-And crosspolarized SINR, and the co-polarized channel is slightly better predicting the correct azimuth. © 2017 DGON.

A new coherent Doppler lidar engine has been developed for wind sensing. this new sub-system is consist of a compact optical transceiver board stacking on a FPGA based signal processor board which has small foot print of 26 × 10cm. In the optical transceiver board a pulsed serrodyning transmitter combined with a heterodyning receiver using commercial off the shelf components of the digital coherent optical communication. In the signal processor board, a system on chip embedded processors and a FPGA is used for not only controlling the optical transceiver but also executing lidar data processing without any external host computer, leading to realization of an ultra-compact wind sensing system. Preliminary experiments of line of sight wind velocities with this new lidar sub-system also presented for demonstration.

In this work, the task is to assist human transcribers to produce, for example, interview or parliament speech transcriptions. the system will perform in-document adaptation based on a small amount of manually corrected automatic speech recognition results. the corrected segments of the spoken document are used to adapt the speech recognizer's acoustic and language model. the updated models are used in second-pass recognition to produce a more accurate automatic transcription for the remaining uncorrected parts of the spoken document. In this work we evaluate two common adaptation methods for speech data in settings that represent typical transcription tasks. For adapting the acoustic model we use the Maximum A Posteriori adaptation method. For adapting the language model we use linear interpolation. We compare results of supervised adaptation to unsupervised adaptation, and evaluate the total benefit of using human corrected segments for in-document adaptation for typical transcription tasks.

In this paper, the problem of estimating the directions of arrival (DOAs) for an unknown number of sound sources is addressed using a microphone array. In outdoor environments, the reverberation is not considered, so the pure delay mixture model is typically adopted here. Since the sound signal is usually wide-band and non-stationary, the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is employed. However in practical applications, the missing or appearing of sources frequently occurs, resulting in a time-varying number of targets. To deal with this problem, a new preprocessing method is presented to partition the whole time domain into some small time windows. In each time window, the sample covariance is computed and used to produce the DOA estimate. Moreover, two methods (Eigenvalue-based and Information theory-based) are used for estimating the number of independent sources. Some selected simulation results are given to demonstrate the estimation performance for the DOAs, and the time accuracy for detecting the change of the number of sources.

this paper develops an inverse scattering method to determine the characteristics of resonance region targets by using ultrawideband scattering signals. the method mainly uses multiple time-domain signals for each target, and they are processed to give feature vectors in frequency domain. these vectors contain target-specific information related with characteristics (dimensions of substructures, material properties, etc.) of the known targets. the target recognition is employed by using test (unknown) target's scattering signal. this time-domain signal is processed in an inverse way to get a frequency-domain test vector. then, the characteristics of test target are assigned as these of one of the known targets with a basic template-matching approach between test vector and feature vectors of these targets. the method is demonstrated for three realistic small-scale airplane. For an ultrawideband system of 0.7-18 GHz, more than 85 percent accuracy has been obtained even under moderate signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio of about 10 dB.

In this paper we propose a novel Track Before Detect (TBD) filter aimed at tracking multiple extended targets from phased-array observations. For extended targets, the source signal is angularly distributed, and hence we track the centroid Direction Of Arrival (DOA) of the target generated signal - called target signal. In this work we suppose known the shape and extent of the target-signal angular spread. Solutions based on extending the system state, to include the target signal, lead to higher-dimensional posteriors. We avoid an extended state by using a novel Marked Poisson Point Process (MPPP) model for the system, and accordingly, we derive the intensity/PHD filter that adaptively estimates target number and corresponding centroid DOAs. the source signals are interpreted as the mark of a target, and they are analytically integrated in the update formula of the filter. therefore, an efficient particle filter implementation is possible. Results on simulated data showcase the improved results of the proposed filter over state-of-the-art methods.

the main task of multistatic active sonar is the localisation and tracking of objects of interest (targets). therefore, a precise knowledge of the parameters of the multistatic scenario is mandatory. these are the positions of the acoustic sources, the times of transmission, as well as the position and heading of the own sonar sensor. Reflections from so called "fixed points" can be used to improve knowledge about these parameters. A fixed point can be a wreck or geographical feature (e.g. a small island) with known position. In general these fixed points consist of multiple scattering points, thus, the assumption of a point-like target is not fulfilled. In this paper we discuss the impact that an extension of the fixed point has on the estimation process and derive a method within the Kalman filter measurement update to incorporate knowledge about the extension in the estimation approach. Results will be discussed for simulated data.

When fusing data from more than one information source, it is important to associate the correct pair of the data available from the information sources to achieve an optimal fused result. the responsibility of the task of proper association lies on the data association method used in the system. the design of the data association method has to be done considering the requirements of the application, quality and quantity of the information provided by the sensors. Parameters such as: whether the fusion is carried out in a centralized or decentralized architecture, whether the data available from the sensors is raw and unprocessed data or already processed by the built-in signal processing system of the sensor, plays a role in the finalization of the data association problem. the data association problem in a decentralized sensor fusion setting, also known as track-to-track association, is discussed in detail in this paper. the information sources used in this paper are environment perception sensors based on different measurement principles used for automotive safety and autonomous driving functions. the sensors deliver kinematic and as well as non-kinematic information on the tracked targets. To make use of this non-kinematic target information, attribute based association methods in-addition to the traditional data association methods and results based on the real world data are presented in this paper. A video recorded under real world test conditions that include sensor data and results will be made available for the community.
