In this paper, we propose a modified iterative pre-whitening projection statistics (MIPPS) method for multi-target detection in non-homogeneous clutters. MIPPS determines and excludes non-homogeneous data samples by iteratively updating a pre-whitening matrix and performing the PS algorithm. Numerical results show that MIPPS improves the average detection probability of weak target when multiple targets with different signal intensities are mixed at low signal-to-clutter ratios.

To overcome the inherent limitations of image resolution by conventional FFT-based algorithms, a novel state-space approach is proposed to process the measured or simulated synthetic data received from the Step-Frequency (SF) radar system. the proposed approach, including a state-space formulation and decomposition of the generated Hankel matrix, is based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) to extract exactly the scattering intensity and positions of scattering centers on the target. As validation, simulation experiments to reconstruct the shape of small point targets (e. g. a 2-D conical target) have been developed, and the comparative results show that the proposed state-space based method has an advantage of higher resolution and less sensitivity to noise.

To achieve submillimetric spatial resolution, a new detection block has been designed for the LabPET II, a small animal PET scanner being developed at Universite de Sherbrooke. Each detection block consists of 2 arrays of 4x8 avalanche photodiodes (APD) individually coupled to an 8x8 scintillator array, to form 64 independent and parallel DAQ channels. this new detection block entails an 8-fold increase in pixel density compared to the LabPET T I. A 64-channel mixed-signal Application Specified Integrated Circuit (ASIC) was designed to extract relevant PET data in real time from the LabPET II detection blocks. the ASIC is expected to support up to 3000 PET events/sec per channel. In order to interface the ASICs forming the PET camera with the storage units, a real-time FPGA-based digital DAQ system was designed. the DAQ system allows event harvesting, processing and transmission to a distant computer for image reconstruction as well as system programming and calibration. Real-time event processing embedded in the DAQ includes energy computation using a time-over-threshold (TOT) conversion scheme, timing corrections and event sorting trees. A real-time coincidence engine analyzes events and only keeps relevant information to minimize data throughput and post-acquisition data processing. the architecture consists of 3 layers of FPGA-based electronics wired through gigabit links: a Front-End board extracts timing and energy along with a pixel address, a Hub board sorts incoming events chronologically and a Coincidence board matches coincident events and copes with randoms estimation. Every FPGA in the different layers is accessible through an Ethernet link. the real-time digital architecture sustains the required throughput of similar to 111 Mevents/s for a similar to 37000 channels scanner configuration.

We report here a backscattering model of average signal power function (SPF) for laser radar 3D range imagery obtained by arrays of detectors for arbitrary coarse targets. the model relates the average power seen by the receiver with laser pulse, target shape, optical scattering properties of surface material, incidence angle and other factors. the optical scattering property of the material is characterized by bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). the model can be used for demonstration of 3D laser radar system and can also be used to generate library of model data sets for automatic target recognition (ATR). Finally, Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) is introduced for parallelizing these algorithms. the acceleration reaches 56 times speedup on single Fermi-generation NVIDIA GTX 480 as compared to the traditional CPU version of code on Intel i7 930 CPU.

An optimized data fusion methodology is presented and makes use of airborne and vessel mounted hyperspectral and multispectral imagery acquired at littoral zones in Florida and the northern Gulf of Mexico. the results demonstrate the use of hyperspectral-multispectral data fusion anomaly detection along shorelines and in surface and subsurface waters. Hyperspectral imagery utilized in the data fusion analysis was collected using a 64-1024 channel, 1376 pixel swath width;temperature stabilized sensing system;an integrated inertial motion unit;and differential GPS. the imaging system is calibrated using dual 18 inch calibration spheres, spectral line sources, and custom line targets. Simultaneously collected multispectral three band imagery used in the data fusion analysis was derived either a 12 inch focal length large format camera using 9 inch high speed AGFA color negative film, a 12.3 megapixel digital camera or dual high speed full definition video cameras. Pushbroom sensor imagery is corrected using Kalman filtering and smoothing in order to correct images for airborne platform motions or motions of a small vessel. Custom software developed for the hyperspectral system and the optimized data fusion process allows for post processing using atmospherically corrected and georeferenced reflectance imagery. the optimized data fusion approach allows for detecting spectral anomalies in the resolution enhanced data cubes. Spectral-spatial anomaly detection is demonstrated using simulated embedded targets in actual imagery. the approach allows one to utilize spectral signature anomalies to identify features and targets that would otherwise not be possible. the optimized data fusion techniques and software has been developed in order to perform sensitivity analysis of the synthetic images in order to optimize the singular value decomposition model building process and the 2-D Butterworth cutoff frequency selection process, using the concept of user defined "feature areas

the microseismic monitoring system employed in the Yufutsu oil/gas field was assessed in terms of the geophone-to-ground coupling and the smallest detectable magnitude of microseismic events. the surface shooting was conducted to calibrate the orientation of the geophones and the shooting signal was also utilized to evaluate the monitoring system. the energy of the surface shot was small. However, the signal was successfully obtained even at the deepest station (at the depth of 3,196 m BSL) with reasonable signal-to-noise ratio at an appropriate number of stacks. the shooting signals measured at all the stations have similar level of amplitude after the correction for geometrical spreading and, therefore, we can conclude that all the stations are reasonably coupled to the formation through the casing. According to the scaling law in seismology, we proposed a method to estimate the displacement spectrum of microseismicity for various magnitudes observed at a certain distance from the hypocenter in the field where some specific parameters (i.e. the density, velocity of S-wave and the quality factor) are available. the modeled displacement spectrum with respect to the actual background noise allows one to estimate the lower bound of the moment magnitude of microseismicity detectable by the monitoring system adopted in the field. We applied this method to assess the monitoring network employed in the Yufutsu oil/gas field. the quality factor, which is one of the key parameters required to model the displacement spectrum, was estimated by using the shooting signals. the moment magnitude of actually observed microseismicities in the Yufutsu field showed consistency with the expected lower bound of moment magnitude of detectable microseismicity, implying the validity of the proposed method in this study. © 2012 CURRAN-conference. three major factors govern the intricacies of community extraction in networks: (1) the application domain includes a wide variety of networks of fundamentally different natures, (2) the literature offers a multitude of disparate community detection algorithms, and (3) there is no consensus characterizing how to discriminate communities from non-communities. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of community properties through a class separability framework. Our approach enables the assessement of the structural dissimilarity among the output of multiple community detection algorithms and between the output of algorithms and communities that arise in practice. To demostrate this concept, we furnish our method with a large set of structural properties and multiple community detection algorithms. Applied to a diverse collection of large scale network datasets, the analysis reveals that (1) the different detection algorithms extract fundamentally different structures;(2) the structure of communities that arise in practice is closest to that of communities that random-walk-based algorithms extract, although still siginificantly different from that of the output of all the algorithms;and (3) a small subset of the properties are nearly as discriminative as the full set, while making explicit the ways in which the algorithms produce biases. Our framework enables an informed choice of the most suitable community detection method for a given purpose and network and allows for a comparison of existing community detection algorithms while guiding the design of new ones. © 2012 ACM.
