In this paper, we present an algorithm for the fusion of surface normals estimated based on Shape from Shading with absolute depth data under exploitation of the mutual advantages, regarding non-Lambertian surfaces with non-uniform albedos. While photometric 3D reconstruction methods yield dense surface detail information which is reliable on small scales, active range scanning provides absolute depth data which are typically noisy on small scales but reliable on large scales. the proposed algorithm applies an iterative refinement to the reconstructed surface in order to suppress errors that result from measurement uncertainties in the surface normals and the absolute depth data by simultaneous minimization of a global error functional. the obtained surface is the best fit to the observed image intensities and depth data. We apply our framework to small-scale real-world objects and to regions of the lunar surface.

this paper describes a novel approach for fast detecting small maritime objects in infrared (IR) images. It is based on the local minimum patterns (LMP), which are theoretically the approximations of some stationary wavelet transforms (SWT). Using LMP to estimate the background with a single image, we obtain an object-aware saliency map by background subtraction. Regions of potential objects are then segmented by an adaptive threshold based on the histogram of the saliency map. We finally propose a fast clustering algorithm for localizing objects from segmented regions. Extensive experiments on challenging data sets show a competitive performance.

Historically, computed tomography reconstructions from truncated projection data have been considered non-unique. However, several recent results suggest that if the density of the object is known on some small region within the region of interest (ROI) then a unique and stable reconstruction of the complete ROI may be possible. Unfortunately, prior knowledge of the exact density of an object being scanned is uncommon, and as such an experimentally determined estimate must be used in its place. this estimate will naturally contain errors. We have performed several reconstruction simulations to establish the sensitivity of the proposed algorithm to errors in the prior knowledge. Our results suggest that the most important element of the prior knowledge is its mean value, while perturbations of the details cause fewer problems in the reconstructed images.

Statistical pattern recognition models are one of the core research topics in the segmentation of the left ventricle of the heart from ultrasound data. the underlying statistical model usually relies on a complex model for the shape and appearance of the left ventricle whose parameters can be learned using a manually segmented data set. Unfortunately, this complex requires a large number of parameters that can be robustly learned only if the training set is sufficiently large. the difficulty in obtaining large training sets is currently a major roadblock for the further exploration of statistical models in medical image analysis. In this paper, we present a novel semi-supervised self-training model that reduces the need of large training sets for estimating the parameters of statistical models. this model is initially trained with a small set of manually segmented images, and for each new test sequence, the system re-estimates the model parameters incrementally without any further manual intervention. We show that state-of-the-art segmentation results can be achieved with training sets containing 50 annotated examples.

We propose a novel gradient driven methodology for three dimensional (3-D) segmentation of Computed Tomographic (CT) imagery. Our approach begins interactively where-in a user marks a set of voxels within the cross-section of a Sub-Volume Of Interest (SVOI), using a single slice of the CT volume. Subsequently, a 3-D gradient detection scheme is utilized to determine the radiodensity variations across the volume. the resultant gradient information is employed in an iterative volume growing procedure, which is initiated at voxels with small gradient magnitudes adjoining the user-selected voxels and culminates at voxels with large gradient magnitudes, to arrive at the final 3-D segmentation result of the SVOI. the aforementioned method was tested on multiple studies and the results show favorable performance against a state-of-the-art technique.

this paper is focused on the Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) using Support Vector Machines (SVM) combined with automatic speech recognition (ASR) techniques. the problem of performing recognition can be broken into three stages: data. acquisition, feature extraction and classification. In this work, extracted features from micro-Doppler echoes signal, using MFCC, LPCC and LPC, are used to estimate models for target classification. In classification stage, three parametric models based on SVM, Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and Greedy GMM were successively investigated for echo target modeling. Maximum a posteriori (MAP) and Majority-voting post-processing (MV) decision schemes are applied. thus, ASR. techniques based on SVM, GMM and GMM Greedy classifiers have been successfully used to distinguish different classes of targets echoes (humans, truck, vehicle and clutter) recorded by a low-resolution ground surveillance Doppler radar. the obtained performances show a high rate correct;classification on the testing set.

Most of the current animal PET detector systems are cylindrical or similar multi-sided polygonal geometries with limited axial field of view. the object is placed near the center of the detector ring during the emission data collection. the signal that can be detected has a limited angular range;the paraxial signal cannot be detected. Moreover, the sensitivity for the objects positioned at different locations inside the FOV is different. the central part of the FOV has higher sensitivity than that near the end along the axis. the lack of paraxial detectability which means non-uniform sampling, along with the non-uniform sensitivity of a PET system, will affect the uniformity of the overall image quality. Also, currently widely used PET data processing and reconstruction algorithms are sinogram based, which usually uses different sizes for the voxel in axial and transaxial directions. Because of these non-uniformities, the resolution and quality of current PET image are anisotropic. In order to achieve isotropic results, the emissions from the object must be collected in full 4 pi space and reconstructed accordingly. Here we propose a full 4 pi emission data collection method, which involving the rotation of the object during the emission collection in a plane parallel to the detector ring axis. the full 4 pi emission data are then reconstructed and processed to generate the 3D image set with cubic voxel, uniform resolution and signal-to-noise ratio in all directions and locations. Both Monte Carlo simulations and experiments are carried out with simulated and real mouse phantoms. Emission data in both 4 pi and conventional modes are collected and then processed. Point source is used in the experiment as the fiducial mark. Our results show that with full 4 pi collection method, the image qualities are substantially improved in several aspects such as the axial distortions and the uniformity of the SNR. A unique optical imaging instrument for fully 360 degree bioluminescence imaging (BLI) and multispectral fluorescence imaging and tomography (FMI/FMT) has been designed and constructed that can be incorporated into any dedicated unmodified small animal PET system with a minimum bore opening diameter of 125 mm. By way of example, an integrated setup for bimodal imaging will be described which has been tailored to the Siemens Inveon PET. the optical imager consists of a cylindrical (hexagonal) rotatable assembly of six microlens-based 25 mm x 100 mm flat panel photon sensors and a variety of light sources for fluorochrome excitation. We present results in the form of simultaneously acquired phantom data as well as of two mouse imaging studies (BLI-PET, FMI-PET) that illustrate the capabilities of this novel approach. Further technical improvements are also presented and discussed such as a novel approach for calculating three-dimensional optical surface images from segmented emission PET data when a strong background signal is present (F18-FDG).

the Large Area Pico-second Photo-Detectors presented in this contribution integrate a photocathode, glass capillary micro-channel plates (MCP) activated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of independent layers of secondary electron emitter and resistive materials, and collecting anodes. Applications range from medical imaging (positron emission tomography) to tracking and calorimetry for high energy physics experiments. these devices are read out from both ends of a set of GHz-bandwidth transmission lines. this allows daisy-chaining of multiple devices to achieve large area detectors with time resolutions on the order of 10-100 pico-seconds and position resolutions of less than one millimeter in each of two spatial dimensions. First tests with pairs of small glass capillary have demonstrated gains of 10(5) to 10(7). A new 6-channel ASIC has been designed in 130 nm CMOS technology to sample and digitize detector data. this ASIC can sample at 15 GS/s with an intrinsic analog bandwidth above 1.5 GHz, and digitizes 1280 cells in parallelin two micro-seconds with 12-bit resolution. Digital signal processing of sampled waveforms from MCP devices is expected to achieve timing and position resolutions comparable to those obtained with digital oscilloscopes.

the BeamCal detector, one of the calorimeters in the forward region of the International Linear Collider detector, will serve three purposes: ensure hermeticity of the detector for small polar angles, reduce the backscattering from pairs into the detector center, and provide a low-latency signal for beam diagnostics. the BeamCal specifications in terms of noise suppression, signal charge, pulse rate and occupancy pose unique challenges in the front-end and readout electronics design. the Bean - BeamCal Instrumentation IC - is a 32-channel front-end and readout IC that will address the BeamCal instrumentation requirements. By employing switched-capacitor filters and a slow reset-release technique, the Bean will process the signal charge at the International Linear Collider pulse rate. Each channel will have a 10-bit successive approximation analog-to-digital converter and digital memory for readout purposes. the Bean will also feature a fast feedback adder, capable of providing an 8-bit, low-latency output for beam diagnostic purposes. this work presents the design and characterization of the Bean prototype, a 3-channel IC that proves the principle of operation described.
