this report summarizes the contributions and debates of the 5th International ecoop Workshop on Quantitative Approaches in object-oriented Software Engineering (QAOOSE 2001), which was held in Budapest on 18–19 June, 2001. the objective of the QAOOSE workshop series is to present, discuss and encourage the use of quantitative methods in object-oriented software engineering research and practice. this year’s workshop included the presentation of eight position papers and one tutorial in the areas of "software metrics definition", "software size, complexity and quality assessment", and "software quality prediction models". the discussion sessions focused on current problems and future research directions in QAOOSE. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

the objective of the 13th edition of Ph Doctoral Students in object-oriented Systems workshop (PHDOOS) was to offer an opportunity for PhD students to meet and share their research experiences, and to discover commonalities in research and student ship. In this way, the participants may receive insightful comment about their research, learn about related work and initiate future research collaborations. We are engaged in the design of Grace, a new object-oriented open source programming language aimed at instructors and students in introductory programming courses. Grace aims to include features that have been found useful in software practice, while allowing multiple different teaching approaches without requiring that concepts be introduced to students before they are ready. While many aspects of Grace's design will be familiar to most object-oriented programmers, Grace cleanly separates the concepts of "object", "class", and "type", and so Grace offers more options for creating objects than most other languages. We have written these patterns to explain how Grace programmers should go about creating objects.

Typed object calculi that permit adding new methods to existing objects must address the problem of name clashes: what happens if a new method is added to an object already having one with the same name but a different type? Most systems statically forbid such clashes by restricting the allowable subtypings. In contrast, by reconsidering the runtime meaning of object extension, the object calculus studied in the author's previous work with Jon Riecke allowed any object to be soundly extended with any method of any name, with unrestricted width subtyping. that language permitted a simple encoding of classes as object-generators. Because of width subtyping, subclasses could be typechecked and compiled with little knowledge of the class hierarchy and without any information about superclasses' private components;this made derived classes more robust to changes in the implementations of base classes. However, the system was not well suited for encoding mixins or by-name subtyping of objects. this article addresses those deficiencies by presenting the Calculus of objects and Indices (COI), a lower-level typed object calculus in which extensible objects are more analogous to tuples than to records. An object is simply a finite sequence of unnamed components referenced by their index in the sequence. Names are then reintroduced by allowing these indices to be first-class values (analogous to pointers to members in C++) that can be bound to variables. Since variables-unlike record labels-freely alpha-vary, difficulties caused by statically undetectable name clashes disappear. By combining COI objects with standard type-theoretic mechanisms, one can encode mixins and classes having the by-name subtyping of languages like C++ or Java but with the robustness of the object-generator encodings. Using records, more standard extensible objects with named components can also be encoded.

Exception handling continues to be a challenging problem in object oriented system development. One reason for this is that today’s software systems are getting increasingly more complex. Moreover, exception handling is needed in a wide range of emerging application areas, sometimes requiring domain-specific models for handling exceptions. Moreover, new programming paradigms such as pervasive computing, service oriented computing, grid, ambient and mobile computing, web add new dimensions to the existing challenges in this area. the integration of exception handling mechanisms in a design needs to be based on well-founded principles and formal models to deal with the complexities of such systems and to ensure robust and reliable operation. It needs to be pursued at the very start of a design with a clear understanding of the ensuing implications at all stages, ranging from design specification, implementation, operation, maintenance, and evolution. this workshop was structured around the presentation and discussion of the various research issues in this regard to develop a common understanding of the current and future directions of research in this area. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper, we propose an access control model that is suitable for a distributed object oriented environment. Our model has two features: authentication with object properties and method categorization by a security level. the object property is meta information of a client, and the client is vested with it in advance. To use the object properties, a server can identify a huge number of clients in the environment by groups that is categorized with the object properties of the clients. And also, to use a combination of multiple object properties in authentication, an administrator of the server can determine the flexible range of target clients. the security level shows how much impact the method affects server's data. If a designer of the server categorizes the server's methods with a security level, an administrator of the server can set an authorization rule to each category instead of each server's method. the categories constitute a tree structure, since a parent category includes child categories. As a result of this, the administrator can set an authorization rule easier than authorization without categorization by the security level. Furthermore, we implemented above the access control model and we evaluated their efficiency.

the QAOOSE'2003 workshop brought together, for a full day, researchers and practitioners working on several aspects related to quantitative evaluation of software artifacts developed with the object-oriented paradigm. Ideas and experiences where shared and discussed. this report includes a summary of the technical presentations and subsequent discussions raised by them. Eleven out of twelve submitted position papers were presented, covering different aspects such as metrics formalization, new metrics (for coupling, cohesion, constraints or dynamic behavior) or metrics validation, to name a few. In the closing session the participants were able to discuss open issues and challenges arising from researching in this area, as well as they tried to forecast which will be the hot topics for research in the short to medium term. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this work, we study the JavaScript Sealed Classes, which differ from regular classes in a few ways that allow ahead-of-time (AoT) compilers to implement them more efficiently. Sealed classes are compatible with the rest of the language so that they can be combined with all other structures, including regular classes, and can be gradually integrated into existing code bases. We present the design of the sealed classes and study their implementation in the hopc AoT compiler. We present an in-depth analysis of the speed of sealed classes compared to regular classes. To do so, we assembled a new suite of benchmarks that focuses on the efficiency of the class implementations. On this suite, we found that sealed classes provide an average speedup of 19%. the more classes and methods programs use, the greater the speedup. Generic types in C# behave invariantly with respect to sub-typing. We propose a system of type-safe variance for C# that supports the declaration of covariant and contravariant type parameters on generic types. To support more widespread application of variance we also generalize the existing constraint mechanism with arbitrary subtype assertions on classes and methods. this extension is useful even in the absence of variance, and subsumes equational constraints proposed for Generalized Algebraic Data Types (GADTs). We formalize the subtype relation in both declarative and syntax-directed style, and describe and prove the correctness of algorithms for constraint closure and subtyping. Finally, we formalize and prove a type safety theorem for a featherweight language with variant classes and generalized constraints. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
