In this paper we present the Personal Culture patterns, a pattern language to support youth in creating a living with continuous self-fulfillments. the Personal Culture patterns consist of 27 patterns describing practical knowledge for effective life design among young people. this paper will go over the following five patterns from the Personal Culture patterns: "I did it!" Search, Dream Tiles, the Power of Words, Fun Along the Way, and Relay for Happiness.

Safety architecture patterns provide knowledge about large scale design decisions for safety-critical systems. they provide good ways to avoid, detect, and handle faults in software or hardware. In this paper we revise existing architectural safety patterns and organize them to build up a pattern system. We add Goal Structuring Notation diagrams to the patterns to provide a structured overview of their architectural decisions. Based on these diagrams we analyze and present relationships between the patterns. the diagrams can also be used to argue about a systems's safety, which we show with an example.

Providing information on the basis of electronic slides represents a common instrument of today's communication. Presented either synchronously within a talk or asynchronously by means of a hand-out, slides are an important carrier of data. Whereas elaborated slide facilities might ease the transmission of information, poor slide designs may rather confuse the audience, making communication more difficult. In the past 20 years, we attended or gave more than 500 slide-based presentations taking place in a professional or private setting. We noticed several reoccurring presentation facilities that had widely positive impact on the overall quality of the talk. In leveraging the pattern format we document seven of these techniques in this article.

Lectures are a common way of teaching in many universities, independent of the general effectiveness of this instructional method. Designing good lectures is a challenging task, and many lecturers struggle with the question how to improve the design of lectures and how to minimize the disadvantages of this instruction method. Educational patterns, as applied by successful lecturers, offer answers to these questions. But these patterns are described in multiple and unrelated publications, which makes finding and using them difficult. In this paper we make an inventory of lecture-relevant patterns from the existing literature on pedagogical patterns and begin with their categorization. the goal of this work is to help lecturers finding relevant patterns that help them designing their lectures and to provide first steps towards a pattern language for lecture design.

An overwhelming number of patterns have been described in literature. As well, comparisons of related patterns with similar outcomes can be found, working out also their particular differences. In this paper, a synoptic view on related patterns and mechanisms, based on binding time and developer roles is proposed. Although highly practical for selecting a pattern or mechanism over competing ones in the light of requirements given, binding time orientation has not gained very much attention until now. Looking at patterns from this angle has also proved valuable in teaching design patterns as a systematic way of explaining and differentiating patterns. the approach is illustrated on selected well-known patterns and mechanisms for object creation.

PRISM is a visual instrument that improves a person's cognitive reasoning by facilitating the process of thinking. Its origins stem from efforts and experiences of psychotherapeutics in the early 1990s. Meanwhile the PRISM methodology - an acronym for «Pictorial Representation of Selfness Ill-Measure» - has spread wider to such domains as coaching processes, participant feedback and project management. this paper outlines a pattern language that should help PRISM facilitators to realize specific PRISM features when adapting this instrument to their dedicated domains. Research has shown strong effectivity and efficacy of using PRISM. Its modus operandi is based on a number of theoretical concepts like the relationship between humans and tools, the presentation of thoughts in a brain as mental models, and the power of visual metaphors. the author aims to extract and outline some patterns that seem to be key drivers to achieve most benefit from PRISM and will hopefully lower the threshold for those who want successfully leverage this methodology for their own purposes. © 2015 ACM.

Resource management is important because of the rising diversity and the resource constraints, like energy, of embedded systems. Energy-constraints are especially challenging in mobile systems like smart phones. A solution to deal with these constraints are power-management techniques that are often only general design principles. Consequently, implementation is often done by experts only. One common approach is to optimize hardware and software until the energy-constraints are fulfilled. this leads to resulting solutions working only for one specific use case. So why shouldn't we mine and use design patterns for power-management in embedded systems from these individual solutions. In contribution, we extended the dynamics and consequence section of the pattern structure to be able to describe the impact to the power consumption. We used the extended structure and mined an example pattern called Energy Valve as a start for mining others.

pattern mining is a term used in the pattern community to describe the process of identifying or discovering patterns. To identify new patterns, usually an informal or ad hoc process of finding patterns (e.g., in existing software systems) is used. this paper reflects on lessons learned and methods used regarding the integration of software pattern mining with qualitative research methods during our work on a pattern language for process-driven and service-oriented architectures (SOAs). this pattern language aims at closing the conceptual gap between business architecture and software architecture with a focus on process-driven solutions. In this paper we emphasize the notion of understanding patterns as sociological phenomena of problem solving behavior. We further introduce a systematic approach for pattern mining based Glaserian Grounded theory techniques. this approach has been applied for mining the pattern language for process-driven SOAs. this work may also contribute to a better empirical grounding of software pattern mining. We will illustrate our approach using the pattern language for process-driven SOAs as a pattern mining case study. Copyright 2015 ACM.

program specialization optimizes a program with respect to program invariants, including known, fixed inputs. these invariants can be used to enable optimizations that are otherwise unsound. In many applications, a program input induces predictable patterns of values across loop iterations, yet existing specializers cannot fully capitalize on this opportunity. To address this limitation, we present Invariant-induced pattern based Loop Specialization (IPLS), the first fully-automatic specialization technique designed for everyday use on real applications. Using dynamic information-flow tracking, IPLS profiles the values of instructions that depend solely on invariants and recognizes repeating patterns across multiple iterations of hot loops. IPLS then specializes these loops, using those patterns to predict values across a large window of loop iterations. this enables aggressive optimization of the loop;conceptually, this optimization reconstructs recurring patterns induced by the input as concrete loops in the specialized binary. IPLS specializes real-world programs that prior techniques fail to specialize without requiring hints from the user. Experiments demonstrate a geomean speedup of 14.1% with a maximum speedup of 138% over the original codes when evaluated on three script interpreters and eleven scripts each.
