Safety architecture patterns provide knowledge about large scale design decisions for safety-critical systems. they provide good ways to avoid, detect, and handle faults in software or hardware. In this paper we revise existing architectural safety patterns and organize them to build up a pattern system. We add Goal Structuring Notation diagrams to the patterns to provide a structured overview of their architectural decisions. Based on these diagrams we analyze and present relationships between the patterns. the diagrams can also be used to argue about a systems's safety, which we show with an example.

Web technologies can support the online exchange of practical knowledge. While the infrastructure for online communities is well understood, the facilitators' activities for supporting the emergence of a community of practice remain an open challenge. this article presents a first step towards a pattern language for growing communities of practice. Based on experiences in large distributed communities, we present good practices for organizations and facilitators who want to encourage active exchange on practical knowledge within the organization and beyond.

We are engaged in the design of Grace, a new object-oriented open source programming language aimed at instructors and students in introductory programming courses. Grace aims to include features that have been found useful in software practice, while allowing multiple different teaching approaches without requiring that concepts be introduced to students before they are ready. While many aspects of Grace's design will be familiar to most object-oriented programmers, Grace cleanly separates the concepts of "object", "class", and "type", and so Grace offers more options for creating objects than most other languages. We have written these patterns to explain how Grace programmers should go about creating objects.

An overwhelming number of patterns have been described in literature. As well, comparisons of related patterns with similar outcomes can be found, working out also their particular differences. In this paper, a synoptic view on related patterns and mechanisms, based on binding time and developer roles is proposed. Although highly practical for selecting a pattern or mechanism over competing ones in the light of requirements given, binding time orientation has not gained very much attention until now. Looking at patterns from this angle has also proved valuable in teaching design patterns as a systematic way of explaining and differentiating patterns. the approach is illustrated on selected well-known patterns and mechanisms for object creation.

Providing information on the basis of electronic slides represents a common instrument of today's communication. Presented either synchronously within a talk or asynchronously by means of a hand-out, slides are an important carrier of data. Whereas elaborated slide facilities might ease the transmission of information, poor slide designs may rather confuse the audience, making communication more difficult. In the past 20 years, we attended or gave more than 500 slide-based presentations taking place in a professional or private setting. We noticed several reoccurring presentation facilities that had widely positive impact on the overall quality of the talk. In leveraging the pattern format we document seven of these techniques in this article.

Lectures are a common way of teaching in many universities, independent of the general effectiveness of this instructional method. Designing good lectures is a challenging task, and many lecturers struggle with the question how to improve the design of lectures and how to minimize the disadvantages of this instruction method. Educational patterns, as applied by successful lecturers, offer answers to these questions. But these patterns are described in multiple and unrelated publications, which makes finding and using them difficult. In this paper we make an inventory of lecture-relevant patterns from the existing literature on pedagogical patterns and begin with their categorization. the goal of this work is to help lecturers finding relevant patterns that help them designing their lectures and to provide first steps towards a pattern language for lecture design.

Within distributed joint research projects, it is necessary to align many kinds of engineering efforts across different work packages within the considered domain. Every project member has his own visions, expectations and experience that must be respected and integrated throughout the whole project duration. Especially in large research consortia, multidisciplinary backgrounds and different working practices need to collaborate and exchange information. Our approach applies the idea of using design patterns as interdisciplinary communication medium, especially for describing and explaining the current application domain and its characteristics. this work presents considerations from two pattern experts workshops that analyzed current pattern formulation and pattern language structuring processes with regard to their suitability to engineering practices within distributed research projects. the idea of using patterns as interdisciplinary communication medium was considered as useful. Additional challenges that were faced with current pattern derivation processes were extracted and formulated as requirements that found the basis for deriving the concept of a collaboratively evolutionary pattern library.

Control systems are getting more and more complex and include growing number of features. the control systems are nowadays software controlled to high degree. All features of the machine, however, are not useful for all customers and customers do not want to pay for the features they do not need. the product, the work machine, needs to be tailored to fit the customer's needs. However, tailoring the product for each customer is not an option as there would be too many control system software versions and configurations of the control system and for example updating the control system software would became impossible. In this paper, we will present three patterns for control systems to help in addressing the aforementioned problems. these patterns generate software architecture that supports varying the control system for different customer needs.

PRISM is a visual instrument that improves a person's cognitive reasoning by facilitating the process of thinking. Its origins stem from efforts and experiences of psychotherapeutics in the early 1990s. Meanwhile the PRISM methodology - an acronym for «Pictorial Representation of Selfness III-Measure» - has spread wider to such domains as coaching processes, participant feedback and project management. this paper outlines a pattern language that should help PRISM facilitators to realize specific PRISM features when adapting this instrument to their dedicated domains. Research has shown strong effectivity and efficacy of using PRISM. Its modus operandi is based on a number of theoretical concepts like the relationship between humans and tools, the presentation of thoughts in a brain as mental models, and the power of visual metaphors. the author aims to extract and outline some patterns that seem to be key drivers to achieve most benefit from PRISM and will hopefully lower the threshold for those who want successfully leverage this methodology for their own purposes.
