Efficient processing of similarity joins is important for a large class of data analysis and data-mining applications. this primitive finds all pairs of records within a predefined distance threshold of each other. However, most of the existing approaches have been based on spatial join techniques designed primarily for data in a vector space. Treating data collections as metric objects brings a great advantage in generality, because a single metric technique can be applied to many specific search problems quite different in nature. In this paper, we concentrate our attention on a special form of join, the Self Similarity Join, which retrieves pairs from the same dataset. In particular, we consider the case in which the dataset is split into subsets that are searched for self similarity join independently (e.g, as in a distributed computing environment). To this end, we formalize the abstract concept of epsilon-Cover, prove its correctness, and demonstrate its effectiveness by applying it to two real implementations on a real-life large dataset.

In this paper we consider the following problem: nodes in a MANET must disseminate data chunks using rateless codes but some nodes are assumed to be malicious, i.e., before transmitting a coded packet they may modify its payload. Nodes receiving corrupted coded packets are prevented from correctly decoding the original chunk. We propose SIEVE, a fully distributed technique to identify malicious nodes. SIEVE is based on special messages called checks that nodes periodically transmit. A check contains the list of nodes identifiers that provided coded packets of a chunk as well as a flag to signal if the chunk has been corrupted. SIEVE operates on top of an otherwise reliable architecture and it is based on the construction of a factor graph obtained from the collected checks on which an incremental belief propagation algorithm is run to compute the probability of a node being malicious. Analysis is carried out by detailed simulations using ns-3. We show that SIEVE is very accurate and discuss how nodes speed impacts on its accuracy. We also show SIEVE robustness under several attack scenarios and deceiving actions.

In order to fulfill the demands for increased performance / power ratio, most chip-vendors are deploying multicore processors to their product lines. Multicore processors are frequently deployed with multilevel cache memories. parallel thread execution in such a multicore system is difficult as it relates to cache sharing to achieve the best performance. Due to the increased execution time unpredictability, it becomes a challenge to support realtime applications on multicore systems with multilevel caches. Studies show that predictability can be improved using cache locking techniques. However, entire locking at level-1 cache may be inefficient for smaller data size (when compared with the cache size). Also, way locking at level-1 cache is not permitted on some processors (like PowerPC 750GX), but way locking at level-2 cache is possible. By locking at level-2 cache, Xenon processor achieves the effect of using local storage by Cell SPEs. In this work, we simulate a multicore parallel computing system with two levels of caches to explore the impact of level-2 cache locking on the performance, power consumption, and predictability. Experimental results show that performance and predictability can be increased and power consumption can be decreased by adding a level-2 cache locking mechanism to an efficient cache sharing structure.

the goal of medical concept extraction is to identify phrases that refer to medical concepts of interest such as problems, treatments and tests from medical documents. In this study, three types of medical concept extraction models are developed and then compared them. the first concept extraction task is mainly based upon semantic features obtained from a domain-knowledge based method using MetaMap, and the other two are machine-learning methods with using sequential classifier Conditional Random Fields (CRF) for both with and without MetaMap outputs as features. Among the three concept extraction models, the combined approach of CRF with MetaMap features obtained the best results.

In order to control risks and facilitate effective decision-making, the relations among risk chains should be systematically analyzed, which is a very difficult process. the aim of this research is to understand the connective generating structure of risk chains and plan problem solving accordingly. therefore, in order to select the analysis method, association rule mining was applied. From the extracted data, the height of the sources of a risk chain and recurrence nature of a risk could be discovered. It is expected that these results can prevent the occurrence of risk chains caused by human factors.

As distributed systems continue to evolve, automatic resource management is becoming more and more important. the resource management system must be able to dynamically handle large heterogeneous systems in a way that gives good performance and resource utilization. In the performance context, allocating software modules to nodes in an efficient way is of high interest. this paper considers the problem of allocating software modules to processing nodes in an automatic dynamic manner using module migration algorithms. the module allocation problem is NP-complete and many heuristics have been proposed. However, in systems where the workload changes over time, it may be infeasible to update module allocation often enough to handle changes in workload. this paper presents the Match-maker algorithm that performs load balancing by pairing overloaded nodes with under-loaded ones, initiating module migration within the pair. the paper presents a load balancing optimization problem, and uses the benchmark problem to evaluate the algorithm. In addition, the Match-maker algorithm is compared with other previously described algorithms for module migration. the Matchmaker algorithm is found to be fast and efficient in reducing load imbalance in distributed systems, especially for large systems.

In recent years, mobile terminals come to be used to assist works. However, we can not say that they are enough suitable to assist works either that occupy hands or that are accomplished in environment with water or fire, which cause troubles with electronic devices. In this study, in order to solve this problem, we propose an assist system using projection mapping and NUI. Note that our system is not an application program, but replaces the former UI simply. Our system consists of a depth camera, an RGB camera, and a projector. It causes a click event by detecting whether a user touches the screen. By replacing the click operation with the touching on the projected screen, it can utilize various existing applications and contents.

Privacy is a major quality attribute of any software. Since personal data of users are collected, stored, processed, and transferred by the applications they use, they need to be assured that proper data protection is in place. Since privacy principles should be taken into account and incorporated into application design, this paper aims to promote privacy by design and presents a development of privacy design patterns. the patterns follow the privacy principles of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and describe details of the privacy principles and how to apply them to the design and implementation of the applications. Software design models realizing the privacy principles are also proposed, using UML notations, so as to enable reuse of the design in privacy-aware applications.

Hadoop is an efficient and simple parallel framework following the MapReduce paradigm, and making the parallel processing recently become a hot issue in data-intensive applications. Since Hadoop can be easily deployed on large-scale clusters including up to thousands of computers, various studies intend to process common relational database operations also on this new platform and expect to achieve a remarkable performance. However, these works have to prepare customized programs according to different input format, making the communication between co-workers difficult. Additionally, all intermediate data have to be transformed to key-value pairs and then transferred through the underlying HDFS, making the data processable by Map and Reduce tasks and keeping a balanced workload on the cluster. During this period, unnecessary overhead decreases both the speed-up and scale-up of these systems. therefore, this paper attempts to propose a light and efficient coupling structure thus to combine Hadoop with single-computer databases on the engine level. On one hand, it uses a well-designed parallel data model to make end-users represent parallel queries like common queries. All current and future data types and algorithms can be used directly, having no need to be specifically changed for the parallel platform. On the other hand, it provides a simple and independent distributed file system to transfer data among database engines directly, without passing through HDFS, hence to remove as much as possible unnecessary transform and transfer overhead. For purpose of demonstration, a prototype parallel SECONDO is introduced in this paper. It has been fully evaluated in both small and large scale clusters, achieving satisfactory performances for different database operations.

In this paper we present an implementation of a generic memetic algorithm (MA) for the edge bi-connectivity augmentation problem (E2AUG). this problem is known for its applications to communication network design and in VLSI floor planning. Our starting point is a standard template for MA. We use a generic programming approach to obtain a C++ implementation of the MA template and instantiate it for the E2AUG problem. the implementation separates issues related to the memetic algorithm from those related to the E2AUG problem making thus possible (he reuse of the implementation for other problems. Moreover, the generic approach enabled us to easily implement the algorithm in parallel setting. We use known benchmarks in the literature for the problem to experimentally evaluate the implementation.
