Approaching a comprehensive performance benchmark for on-line transaction processing (OLTP) applications in a cloud environment is a challenging task. Fundamental features of clouds, such as the pay-as-you-go pricing model and unknown underlying configuration of the system, are contrary to the basic assumptions of available benchmarks such as TPC-W or RUBiS. In this paper, we introduce a systematic performance benchmark approach for OLTP applications on public clouds that use virtual machines (VMs). We propose WPress benchmark, which is based on the widespread blogging software, WordPress, as a representative OLTP application and implement an open source workload generator. Furthermore, we utilize a CPU micro-benchmark to investigate CPU performance of cloud-based VMs in greater detail. Average response time and total VM cost are the performance metrics measured by WPress. We evaluate small and large instance types of three real-life cloud providers, Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure and Rackspace cloud. Results imply that Rackspace cloud has better average response times and total VM cost on small instances. However, Microsoft Azure is preferable for large instance type.

Data warehouses are at the core of enterprise IT and enable the efficient storage and analysis of structured data. Besides, unstructured content, e.g., emails and documents, constitutes more than half of the entire enterprise data and contains a lot of implicit knowledge about warehouse entities. thus, holistic analytics require the integration of structured warehouse data and unstructured content to generate novel insights. these insights can also be used to enrich the integrated data and to create a new basis for further analytics. Existing integration approaches only support a limited range of analytical applications and require the costly adaptation of the warehouse schema. In this paper, we present the Deep Data Warehouse (DeepDWH), a novel type of data warehouse based on the flexible integration and enrichment of warehouse data and unstructured content, addressing the variety challenge of Big Data. It relies on information-rich instance-level links between warehouse elements and content items, which are represented in a graph-oriented structure. Neither adaptations of the existing warehouse nor the design of an overall federated schema are required. We design a conceptual linking model and develop a logical schema for links based on a property graph. As a proof of concept, we present a prototypical implementation of the DeepDWH including a link store based on a graph database.

Computer Generated Holography (CGH) is considered a promising candidate for realizing 3D display with complete depth features. However, the realization of a largescale CGH requires a huge computation time. this paper proposes a method for decomposing an input object into sub-objects and generating sub-holograms from them utilizing interpolation. the major advantage of this method is that the generation processes become mutually independent and can be executed in parallel without communication and synchronization. After presenting the theory of interpolation method, we will show how we can implement the method on GPU using data-parallel operations. We will also show the simulation and optical reconstruction results that verify the correctness of the method. Finally, we will present the preliminary results of our experiment by using GPU.

State-machine replication is a popular approach to building fault-tolerant systems, which relies on the sequential execution of commands to guarantee strong consistency. Sequential execution, however, threatens performance. Recently, several proposals have suggested parallelizing the execution model of the replicas to enhance state-machine replication's performance. Despite their success in accomplishing high performance, the implications of these models on checkpointing and recovery is mostly left unaddressed. In this paper, we focus on the checkpointing problem in the context of parallel State-Machine Replication. We propose two novel algorithms and assess them through simulation and a real implementation.

Mark-split is a garbage collection algorithm that combines advantages of both the mark-sweep and the copying collection algorithms. In this paper, we present a parallel mark-split garbage collector (GC). Our parallel design introduces and makes use of an efficient concurrency control mechanism for handling the list of free memory intervals. this mechanism is based on a lock-free skip-list design which supports an extended set of operations. Beside basic operations, it can perform a composite one that can search and remove and also insert two elements atomically. We have implemented the parallel mark-split GC in OpenJDK's HotSpot virtual machine. We experimentally evaluate our collector and compare it with the default concurrent mark-sweep GC in HotSpot, using the DaCapo benchmarks, on two contemporary multiprocessor systems;one has 12 Intel Nehalem cores with Hyperthreading and the other has 48 AMD Bulldozer cores. the evaluation shows that our parallel mark-split keeps the characteristics of the sequential mark-split, that it performs better than the concurrent mark-sweep in applications that have low live/garbage ratio, and have live objects locating contiguously, therefore being marked consecutively. Our parallel mark-split performs significantly better than a trivial parallelization based on locks in terms of both collection time and scalability.

In this paper, the authors propose an analysis of the frequency response function in a car compartment, subject to some fluctuating pressure distribution along the open cavity of the sun-roof at the top of a car. Coupling of a computational fluid dynamics and of a computational acoustics code is considered to simulate the acoustic fluid-structure interaction problem. Iterative Krylov methods and domain decomposition methods, tuned on Graphic Processing Unit (GPU), are considered to solve the acoustic problem with complex number arithmetics with double precision. Numerical simulations illustrate the efficiency, robustness and accuracy of the proposed approaches.

the work described in this paper develops a control framework for modelling and analysis of parallel/distributed time-dependent multi-agent systems. the approach centres on a minimal computational model which separates agent behaviours from schedulable actions which model activities which have a time duration and require specific processing units. Different control strategies ranging from pure concurrent to time sensitive (real-time or simulated-time) can be considered and applied as a plug-in to a multi-agent system. the control framework is tailored to the JADE distributed agent infrastructure, which lacks of any built-in solution for developing time-dependent applications. this paper focusses on the achievement of control strategies for schedulability analysis of embedded real-time systems designed to execute on a mul-ticore/distributed context. As a case study, a real-time tasking set is modelled and analyzed through simulation, which requires flexible computational resources. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.
