According to the pay-per-use model adopted in clouds, the more the resources consumed by an application running in a cloud computing environment, the greater the amount of money the owner of the corresponding application will be charged. therefore, applying intelligent solutions to minimize the resource consumption is of great importance. Because centralized solutions are deemed unsuitable for large-distributedsystems or large-scale applications, we propose a fully distributed algorithm (called DRA) to overcome the scalability issues. the aforementioned problem can be solved by identifying an assignment scheme between the interacting components of an application, such as processes and virtual machines, and the computing nodes of a cloud system, such that the total amount of resources consumed by the respective application is minimized. the decisions for the transition from one assignment scheme to another one are made in a dynamic way and based only on local information. It should be stressed that DRA achieves convergence and always results in the optimal solution. We also show, through an experimental evaluation, that DRA achieves up to 55% network cost reduction when compared to the most recent algorithm in the literature.

this paper presents a parallel particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique for reactive power and voltage control (Volt/Var Control: VVC) investigating dependability. High penetration of renewable energies and deregulation of power systems force power flow to change suddenly and operators in control centers have to control voltage in wider power systems. therefore, VVC is required to shorten the control interval and handle larger-scale power systems. One of the solutions for the problem is applications of parallel and distributedcomputing. Since power system is one of the infrastructures of social community, sustainable voltage control is crucial and dependability is strongly required for VVC. this paper investigates not only fast computation by parallel computation but also dependability of parallel PSO for VVC with IEEE 14, 30, 57, and 118 bus systems.

Withthe continually growing popularity of online video sharing, energy consumption in video sharing servers has become an pivotal issue. Energy savings in video servers can be achieved by utilizing low power modes in disks, but this causes enhanced delay which is not desirable for video sharing services. In this paper, we present a new energy management scheme that jointly optimizes energy and delay for the video storage system. there are two salient characteristics of the proposed scheme. First, it exploits the unique workload characteristics of video sharing services. Second, it includes a new model that efficiently facilitates the selection of power modes for disks. Experiments show that our scheme achieves considerably more energy savings under the same delay level compared to the traditional threshold-based energy management scheme.

this paper presents improvements of the parallel-FIMI method for statical load balancing of mining of all frequent itemsets on a distributed-memory (DM) parallel machine. this method probabilistically partitions the space of all frequent itemsets into partitions of approximately the same size. the improvements consist in paralelization of the approximate partitioning of the search space and of dynamic reordering of items during construction of prefix-based equivalence classes. the new versions of the method achieve nearly linear speedups up to 10 processors.

Monitoring and evaluating distributedsystems at runtime is a difficult effort. Network traffic analysis may be used to analyse distributedsystems, but the capacity to analyse large amount of traffic is a challenge. this work proposes the use of MapReduce for deeply inspecting distributedsystems network traffic, evaluating the effectiveness and the processing capacity of MapReduce for this inspection.
the amount of data that is available to users continues to grow. To make use of the large data sets, it is important that users have access to tools that support the interpretation of the data. Data visualization has ...

In many distributed applications, identifying the sequence of event occurrence is useful. Doing so requires local clocks to be properly synchronized with each other. this paper presents a method of pseudo-synchronization of clocks by making use of the occurrence time of events included in direct "happened-before" relations. the basic idea is to approximate the actual clock shift between two clocks using the minimum transmission delay of messages between a pair of hosts. Evaluation results suggest that non-base clocks are closely synchronized with a base clock without violating the direct "happened-before" relations.

In many numerical applications resulting from computational science and engineering problems, the solution of sparse linear systems is the most prohibitively compute intensive task. Consequently, the linear solvers need to be carefully chosen and efficiently implemented in order to harness the available computing resources. Krylov subspace based iterative solvers have been widely used for solving large systems of linear equations. In this paper, we focus on the design of such iterative solvers to take advantage of massive parallelism of general purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPU)s. We will consider Stabilized BiConjugate Gradient (BiCGStab) and Conjugate Gradient Squared (CGS) methods for the solutions of sparse linear systems with unsymmetric coefficient matrices. We discuss data structures and efficient implementation of these solvers on the NVIDIA's CUDA platform. We evaluate scalability and performance of our implementations in the context of a financial engineering problem of solving multidimensional option pricing PDEs using sparse grid combination technique.
