In this paper we present an approach for the efficient computation of optical flow fields in real-time and provide implementation details. Proposing a modification of the popular Lucas-Kanade energy functional based on integral projections allows us to speed up the method notably. We show the potential of this method which can compute dense flow fields of 640×480 pixels at a speed of 4 fps in a GPU implementation based on the OpenCL framework. Working on sparse optical flow fields of up to 17,000 points, we reach execution times of 70 fps. Optical flow methods are used in many different areas, the proposed method speeds up current surveillance algorithms used for scene description and crowd analysis or Augmented Reality and robot navigation applications.

the use of hardware description languages to provide digital image processing results is a recent technique that offers a direct connection to reconfigurable hardware implementation. this paper presents a real time system for digital image processing using Verilog hardware description language that can be followed by immediate hardware implementation possibility. the image enhancement algorithms included in the described system were applied to an ultrasound image. the paper focuses on image enhancement methods such as contrast and brightness transformation, inverting and pseudo-coloring images, described and simulated using Verilog hardware description language. With our study we intend to contribute to the diagnoses of invasive and non-invasive methods in pre-operator stage, using modern VLSI technologies with applications in medical imaging.

As part of their contribution to the continuous development of video technologies, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) created the Joint Expert Team (JVET) in order to study the potential need for the standardization of the future video coding, called Versatile Video Coding (VVC). the VVC project was aiming at outperforming the coding efficiency of the High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) by 40-50% with the same perceptual quality. With the release of its final version in July 2020, VVC has demonstrated a superior coding efficiency, up to 40% [6] of bit reduction beyond HEVC. However, it introduces significant computational complexity in the encoding engine. Such complexity should be analyzed. In this paper, the distribution of intra modes is illustrated through statistical analysis in order to speed up the intra mode decision process in the VVC. Experimental results show that the VVC uses the 6 Most Probable Modes (MPM) as the most used intra modes. In addition, these commonly used intra modes are usually numerous on deeper Multi-type Tree (MT) depths unrelatedly to the Quantization Parameter (QP) but they may vary according to the video texture characteristics and the used intra coding tool, whether Multi Refrence Lines (MRL), Matrix Weighted Intra Prediction (MIP) or Intra Sub Partitions (ISP). this work can be considered as a milestone for proposing intelligent algorithms to perform fast encoding decisions in the intra prediction step.

Dynamic system modeling plays a crucial role in the development of techniques for stationary and non-stationary signal processing. Due to the inherent physical characteristics of systems usually under investigation, non-negativity is a desired constraint that can be imposed on the parameters to estimate. In this paper, we propose a general method for system identification under non-negativity constraints. We derive additive and multiplicative weight update algorithms, based on (stochastic) gradient descent of mean-square error or Kullback-Leibler divergence. Experiments are conducted to validate the proposed approach.

Spectrogram inversion or phase retrieval is an old topic in digital signal processing, that has been revisited since a few years for its proved relevance to many recent applications, such as source separation, speech enhancement and compressive sensing. Spectrogram inversion aims to reconstruct a signal from partial spectral information, such as the magnitude spectrum or the phase spectrum only, which are obtained by the short-time Fourier transform (STFT). thus, in this work the relevance of signal reconstruction is studied. First, the proposed algorithm, based on the recent theoretic relationships between STFT magnitude and phase is presented. Secondly, the proposed method is tested on clean and simulated-noisy speech. Finally, the relevance of spectrogram inversion as implemented either in our proposal or in state-of-the-art algorithms is evaluated for the particular application on speech enhancement. the results show the advantages and the limits of using spectrogram inversion in such an application.

Similarity query (a.k.a. nearest neighbor query) processing has been an active research topic for several decades. It is an essential procedure in a wide range of applications (e.g., classification & regression, deduplication, image retrieval, and recommender systems). Recently, representation learning and auto-encoding methods as well as pre-trained models have gained popularity. they basically deal with dense high-dimensional data, and this trend brings new opportunities and challenges to similarity query processing. Meanwhile, new techniques have emerged to tackle this long-standing problem theoretically and empirically. this tutorial aims to provide a comprehensive review of high-dimensional similarity query processing for data science. It introduces solutions from a variety of research communities, including data mining (DM), database (DB), machine learning (ML), computer vision (CV), natural language processing (NLP), and theoretical computer science (TCS), thereby highlighting the interplay between modern computer science and artificial intelligence technologies. We first discuss the importance of high-dimensional similarity query processing in data science applications, and then review query processing algorithms such as cover tree, locality sensitive hashing, product quantization, proximity graphs, as well as recent advancements such as learned indexes. We analyze their strengths and weaknesses and discuss the selection of algorithms in various application scenarios. Moreover, we consider the selectivity estimation of high-dimensional similarity queries, and show how researchers are bringing in state-of-the-art ML techniques to address this problem. We expect that this tutorial will provide an impetus towards new technologies for data science.

In scenes of significantly varying lighting conditions, under and over exposed regions can suffer from a loss of information. Similarly, the presence of spatial depth within a scene can cause some image regions to be out of focus. Several methods of addressing these issues exist, including tone mapping for true high dynamic range representation and exposure fusion for combining varied-exposure low dynamic range images, as solutions to the former, and image fusion and segmentation etc. to address the latter. this paper proposes an overhauled method of exposure fusion that solves the exposure and focus problems simultaneously, achieving a well-exposed, all-in-focus result. Smart, scene-based data acquisition techniques for reducing both required input data and computational resources are discussed. A platform for a realtime system implementation is also presented.

In stochastic computing (SC), data is represented using random bit-streams. the efficiency and accuracy of SC systems rely heavily on the stochastic number generator (SNG), which converts data from binary to stochastic bit-streams. While previous research has shown the benefits of using low-discrepancy (LD) sequences like Sobol and Halton in the SNG, the potential of other well-known random sequences remains unexplored. this study investigates new random sequences for potential use in SC. We find that Van Der Corput (VDC) sequences hold promise as a random number generator for accurate and energy-efficient SC, exhibiting intriguing correlation properties. Our evaluation of VDC-based bit-streams includes basic SC operations (multiplication and addition) and image processing tasks like image scaling. Our experimental results demonstrate high accuracy, reduced hardware cost, and lower energy consumption compared to state-of-the-art methods. © 2023 ACM.

In this work, a MATLAB based user interface with various computation modules which simulate the image blur using the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is presented. image distortion in an imaging system occurs through image blur and noise. the amount of the image blur depends on the characteristics of the optical system, sensor, post-sensor electronics; atmospheric conditions; and motion characteristics of the platform where imager is situated. In this work, image blur is simulated using MTF, especially under conditions where atmospheric degradation effects are dominant. Upon selection of an image by the user, the image blur due to components of the imaging systems and different atmospheric conditions is added to obtain a resultant image. the user can freely specify the values of parameters determining the amount of image blur. By employing synthetic image generators, this work can be used for increasing the efficiency of target detection, tracking, and image restoration algorithms.

this paper discusses an efficient way of reconstructing spheres from the occluding contours of two views. It takes into consideration, the geometric properties of the system and uses frontier points as additional data. this algorithm is especially useful for applications where the objects to be modelled are known to resemble spheres and where speed is of importance. It is developed for fruit sorting applications where the processing has to be done in real-time
