Subdivision surfaces are an established modeling tool in computergraphics and computer-aideddesign. While the theoretical foundations of subdivision surfaces are well studied, the correlation between a control mesh and its subdivided limit surface still has some open-ended questions: Which topology should a control mesh have? Where should control vertices be placed? A modeler - human or software - is confronted withthese questions and has to answer them. In this paper we analyze four characteristic situations. Each one consists of an analytical reference surface S and several variants of control meshes C-i. In order to concentrate on the topology of the control meshes, the geometrical positions of their control vertices have been determined and optimized automatically. As a result we identified the best topology of all C-i to represent the given surface S. Based on these results we derived heuristics to model with subdivision surfaces. these heuristics are beneficial for all modelers.

Moore's law is the empirical observation that component density and performance of integrated circuits - approximately doubles every eighteen months. It is not a 'law' in the sense that basic principals of physics and thermodynamics constitute the rules of nature. But there is a 'law' that serves as the basis for Moore's law; it is the general principle that governs learning curves, i.e. that efficiencies improve a fixed percentage with increases in the total accumulated volume of production, when analyzed on a logarithmic scale. Analyzing current trends in integrated circuit technology reveals the potential left to achieve performance, reliability and cost improvements via the traditional means of shrinking design rules and increasing die and wafer size. It also suggests where nontraditional innovation is likely to have its greatest impact. this talk explores these projections for future technology and suggest where the discontinuities are most likely to occur.

An introductory course in the use of multimedia techniques for technical communication was designed and presented as a distance education course. the software application PowerPoint and several readily available HTML editors were used by students to create electronic presentations and Web sites that employed sound, animation, film, as well as a variety of graphics and text messages to achieve specific communication objectives. Students used a messaging application, First Class, and the Internet to get assignments, learn about multimedia, discuss their experiences and problems, communicate withtheir instructor and showcase and critique their own multimedia projects.

To create a 3D rendering of an amputee's residual limb for a computer-aided Socket design software, the image data must be accurately segmented to extract the significant fit points for the limb. this paper reports on the use of a Bayesian segmentation approach created to be robust enough for speckle-laden or noisy images on relatively noise-free ultrasound images of a residual limb. the authors wanted to see if the algorithm would be able to produce a segmented image with improved detail given that the original image was free of noise. the algorithm provides a multi-resolution segmentation using the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) densities based on modeling the a priori probability distribution with a Gibbs random field (GRF). the authors summarize the segmentation process which consists mainly of a filter-and-decimate procedure and an adaptive clustering algorithm. their results on low noise ultrasound data indicate that the Bayesian approach does not improve noticeably better segmentation of detail in the image data.

the DEVIEW project is meant to support the computer-aided development of information systems. One of its subsystems, MONDRIAN, automatically generates a layout for a data flow diagram from the requirements specifications stored in a database. Another subsystem, DEPICT, allows the analyst to create or modify both data flow diagrams and requirements specifications in an interactive graphic environment. the paper focuses on the design of the graphics database to support both subsystems.
