fieldbuses are the most common used communication systems in industrial applications. Nowadays there are a lot of incompatible different solutions causing economic waste when little change in bus definitions are carried out. this paper proposes the implementation of reconfigurable fieldbuses using reconfigurable devices like FPGA (fieldprogrammable gate array) or PLD (programmablelogic device). To evaluate the viability of this solution, this work implements the PROFIBUS (Process fieldbus) protocol in an Altera's FPGA to connect a temperature sensor to a PROFIBUS bus. the physical level of the protocol as well as the required services of the data link level have been implemented in the FPGA.

fieldprogrammable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have emerged as the key technology for rapidly implementing digital circuits in VLSI. Much research has been done on their architecture and applications. One particularly important area of study is their routing implementation, which is greatly affected by the routing architecture and routing resources. this paper explores the effective utilization of a routing hierarchy that is present in the currently available commercial FPGAs. A stochastic model is adopted to investigate the routability on symmetrical FPGAs containing a routing resource hierarchy. the performance of our model is compared to that of an FPGA without a routing hierarchy. Experimental methods are used to determine the switch consumption of various routing resources. Results show that integrating a routing resource hierarchy into FPGAs causes a design to consume fewer routing resources. Consequently, the speed of designs implemented in such FPGAs can be greatly improved.

this paper presents a reconfigurable sigma-delta audio Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) which is suitable for embedded FPGA applications. the Sigma-Delta Modulator (SDM) design can be configured as a 3rd or 5th order SDM and allows different input word lengths. Different input sampling rates are also entertained by employing a programmable interpolator. the DAC accepts 16-/18-/20-/24-bit PCM data at sampling rates of 32/44.1/48/88.2/96 kHz for applications in CD, SACD and DVD audio.

A polylactic acid (PLA) that is a biodegradable plastic, was subjected to measurements of conduction current and dielectric properties as well as thermal analysis. For the electrical properties of PLA, its volume resistivity (/spl rho/) was larger than those of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). the relative permittivity (/spl epsiv//sub r/') indicated intermediate values between that of polyester and those of PE and PP. the dielectric loss tangent (tan/spl delta/) was larger than those of PE and PP, but smaller than that of Polyester. For the electric field dependence of the conduction current of PLA in the high electric field, the current density (J) rapidly increased and /spl rho/ rapidly decreased, with increasing electric field. then, electric breakdown occurred when E/spl ap/2.8 MV/cm. From the results of thermal analyses, it was found that the glass transition temperature (T/sub g/) of PLA was about 60/spl deg/C and the melting point (T/sub m/) was about 166/spl deg/C.
