Even though there are several deterministic methods for the modeling of linear systems, there is no standard method for the modeling of nonlinear systems. Most biological systems can be thought of as nonlinear systems. For the modeling of biological systems the authors have studied nonlinear systems using genetic programming. Time series were generated from the simple known nonlinear dynamics. then nonlinear dynamics was estimated from these time series using genetic programming. For the tested nonlinear systems this suggested method estimated the nonlinear dynamics correctly. this method also has been applied for the modeling of the dynamics of the 24-hour electrocardiogram.

When designing software, programmers usually think in terms of modules that are represented as functions and classes, but using existing configuration management systems, programmers have to deal with versions and configurations that are organized by files and directories. this is inconvenient and error-prone, since there is a gap between handling source code and managing configurations. We present a framework for programming environments that handles versions and configurations directly in terms of the functions and classes in source code. We show that withthis framework, configuration management issues in software reuse and cooperative programming become easier. We also present a prototype environment that has been developed to verify our ideas.

In scintigraphy, segmentation is usually based on the selection of a cut-off level applied to the original image which shows a distribution of radioactivity. We propose, for myocardial scintigraphy, a new approach in which segmentation is applied to a functional image representing the "probability of belonging to the myocardium". this image, generated by a fuzzy logic algorithm using the morphological skeleton as an input data, displays the myocardium with a higher contrast and sharper limits than on the original image and is therefore more easily segmented. Moreover any defect becomes filled. this principle was used to analyse with an extremely high reproducibility the radiotracer distribution on tomographic views of the myocardium that were previously reconstructed, reoriented and finally sectorized.

In this study, the use of fuzzy logic concepts in modelling biochemical reactions is shown. In fact, each enzymatic reaction is modeled by means of a "sigmoidal transfer function" relating input and output substrate concentrations. the slant of this function is adjusted using fuzzy concepts. this adjustment is conducted depending on the enzymatic reaction type (having activators/inhibitors or not). the obtained model seems to be promising in order to permit quantitative results to process data concerning adverse drug reactions.

A two-model multilayered neural networks (MNN) controller with modified back-propagation training algorithm is designed to adaptively control the mean arterial blood pressure. the controller is also associated with a fuzzy logic unit (LGU) to determine an incremental value and update the output weighting factor of the parallel two-model MNN controller for adequate control action. Extensive computer simulations indicate satisfactory performance and robustness of the proposed controller in the presence of much noise, over the full range of plant parameters, uncertainties and large variations of parameters.
