the prevailing need to transition to carbon neutrality in the power sector mandates the global community to implement resources and investment in renewable energy sources (RES) as an alternative to conventional thermal plants. However, the inherent stochastic nature of RES introduces significant challenges in maintaining a stable power supply, thereby accentuating the indispensable role of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). While current research primarily focuses on identifying critical locations in the grid such as transmission line bottlenecks to place ESS, a critical aspect often neglected is the availability of surplus power from RES to charge the ESS. It is essential to assess the available power at each potential site to ensure efficient utilization of energy storage, which will significantly enhance grid reliability. this paper presents a methodology that integrates Sequential Monte Carlo simulations, sensitivity analysis via Lagrange Multipliers, and linear optimization to identify optimal sites for integration of ESS to grid. the method effectively identifies the best location by balancing two key factors: maximizing the contribution of ESS to prevent power outages (load curtailment) and ensuring sufficient excess power to supply the energy storage systems. the algorithm is implemented on the modified IEEE One Area RTS-96 test system, incorporating a substantial integration of wind power.

A virtual power plant (VPP) relies on advanced information and communication technologies (ICTs) to manage massive demand-side resources. Conventional reliability evaluation methods, based on the optimal power flow model, however, cannot be used to evaluate the impacts of random communication failures or ICT component faults. thus, this article proposes an optimal information flow (OIF)-based reliability evaluation method for a VPP. First, a Poisson point process-based communication reliability model is formulated for a heterogeneous communication network, consisting of WiFi, 4G, and 5G communication channels. then, an OIF model is established, which not only can characterize the dynamic information flow of the VPP under normal state, but also can readjust the information flow to minimize the impacts when communication failures or ICT component faults happen. Furthermore, a layered greedy algorithm is proposed. the algorithm decomposes the OIF model into many small-scale subproblems and employs greedy rules to find approximation solutions effectively. Case studies are carried out on a VPP test system with 15,120 demand-side resources. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the OIF model.

Power system strength assessment is a concept that has been widely spoken with high penetration of Inverter Based Resources (IBRs). To assess the system strength in IBR-dominated power systems, various static-type indices primarily based on the concept of fault level are proposed and used in practice. the Interactive Short Circuit Ratio (ISCR) is one such index that considers both active and reactive power injections from both the IBR itself and any reactive power compensation devices. However, the assessment of online power system strength is now required in IBRdominated power systems to ensure voltage stability is maintained with new IBR connections. this requires a technique to screen buses of the power system that may be vulnerable to undesirable voltage fluctuations after the new IBR connection. A preliminary screening assessment could reduce the dependency on time-consuming electromagnetic transient type simulations (EMT) by reducing the number of simulations required. this paper presents an overview of power system strength assessment indices along with a screening technique to identify the best locations of IBR connections using the concept of electrical distance and Interactive Short Circuit Ratio (ISCR).

In this paper, the problem of online distributed optimization with stochastic and nonconvex objective functions is studied by employing a multi-agent system. When making decisions, each agent only has access to a noisy gradient of its own objective function in the previous time and can only communicate with its immediate neighbors via a time-varying digraph. To handle this problem, an online distributed stochastic projection-free algorithm is proposed. Of particular interest is that the dynamic regrets are employed to measure the performance of the online algorithm. Existing works on online distributed algorithms involving stochastic gradients only provide the sublinearity results of regrets in expectation. Different from them, we study the high probability bounds of the dynamic regrets, i.e., the sublinear bounds of dynamic regrets are characterized by the natural logarithm of the failure probability's inverse. Under mild assumptions on the graph and objective functions, we prove that if the variations in both the objective function sequence and its gradient sequence grow within a certain rate, then the high probability bounds of the dynamic regrets grow sublinearly. Finally, a simulation example is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results. this paper introduces a Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS)-based approach for constructing an aggregated model of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) at the substation level. the proposed approach employs probabilistic and frequency distributions to estimate an equivalent reliability model for distribution systems, accurately reflecting the varying degrees of grid support. It aggregates DERs and loads behind the substation and represents them as a single multi-state unit. this aggregation involves clustering power levels and utilizing state transition frequencies to develop the model. An event-driven MCS is utilized to evaluate the aggregated power at the substation level. this model is instrumental for conducting grid-wide reliability analyses with reduced complexity, and it plays a crucial role in grid expansion, maintenance, and operational planning. the event-driven MSC is utilized to generate the state of system components at each time instant. OpenDSS is concurrently used to account for distribution system unbalances and run power flow analysis to estimate the aggregated power based on component states. Finally, results provide the aggregated states and the impact of component failure through a demonstration of aggregated power with and without failure consideration. this study provides a comprehensive framework for DER integration at the substation level, contributing significantly to the advancement of reliable and efficient power distribution systems.

In this paper, the fuzzy logic control (FLC) is presented to address the instability effects of constant power load, and how to regulate the output voltage of a DC-DC Boost converter. the constant power load has negative incremental resistance, which makes the system unstable under a small disturbance on the load. To evaluate the performance, the proposed method is simulated by a MATLAB-SIMULINK model. Furthermore, the proposed concept is validated experimentally using a field programmable gate Array FPGA-Based Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation by hardware description language.

Land use and crop production in the Khorezm region in western Uzbekistan, exemplarily for the irrigated lowlands of Central Asia, are challenged by the excessive, non-sustainable use of irrigation water and repeated water shortages on one hand, and soil degradation by secondary salinization on the other hand. One of the research objectives of the German-Uzbek Khorezm project, funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and led by Center of Development Research (ZEF) of Bonn University, was to better understand options for land use and choice of technology at the farm level in order to evaluate and propose technological alternatives and agricultural policy options for sustainable land use. To address these issues, a Farm-Level Economic Ecological Optimization Model (FLEOM) was developed as an integrated decisionsupport tool capable of optimizing land and resource use at the level of large farms and water user associations, while at the same time assessing the respective economic and environmental impacts at the micro-scale. this chapter provides a brief introduction to characteristics of FLEOM and the necessary steps and studies related to the generation of its database. Based on a comprehensive systemunderstanding composed by a range of agronomic and socioeconomic studies carried out in the project, the model captures the basic features of the regional agriculture and the interrelations of production activities most prevalent to the local farmers. It comprises regionally specified input-output parameters and conditions of land and water use. the flexibility of the model allows the addition of new crops, the modification of socio-economic parameters in a user-friendly way, such as to simulate changes in socio-economic and production environments, securing a wide range of its possible uses in the future. In the framework of circuits for 5G, this paper presents an innovative power efficient method to design cascaded distributed amplifiers. Validation is achieved with a 55-nm CMOS technology by ST -Microelectronics developed for the mm-wave range. Several rules are specified for analysis and design of an optimum structure, making the part between the number of trans conductances to be distributed and the number of distributed stages to be cascaded. Attention is also paid to the trade-off between power consumption and tunability. the Cadence Virtuoso tool is used to simulate the design which shows a targeted gain of 20 dB±0.8 dB over a bandwidth of 120 GHz with a power consumption of 174mW and an estimated area of 0.3 mm 2 .

Developing architecture for upgrading I&C systems of an operating nuclear power plant using a quality attribute-driven design method

this paper presents the architecture for upgrading the instrumentation and control (I&C) systems of a Korean standard nuclear power plant (KSNP) as an operating nuclear power plant. this paper uses the analysis results of KSNP's I&C systems performed in a previous study. this paper proposes a Preparation-Decision-Design-Assessment (PDDA) process that focuses on quality oriented development, as a cyclical process to develop the architecture. the PDDA was motivated from the practice of architecture-based development used in software engineering fields. In the preparation step of the PDDA, the architecture of digital-based I&C systems was setup for an architectural goal. Single failure criterion and determinism were setup for architectural drivers. In the decision step, defense-in-depth, diversity, redundancy, and independence were determined as architectural tactics to satisfy the single failure criterion, and sequential execution was determined as a tactic to satisfy the determinism. After determining the tactics, the primitive digital-based I&C architecture was determined. In the design step, 17 systems were selected from the KSNP's I&C systems for the upgrade and functionally grouped based on the primitive architecture. the overall architecture was developed to show the deployment of the systems. the detailed architecture of the safety systems was developed by applying a 2-out-of-3 voting logic, and the detailed architecture of the non-safety systems was developed by hot-standby redundancy. While developing the detailed architecture, three ways of signal transmission were determined with proper rationales: hardwire, datalink, and network. In the assessment step, the required network performance, considering the worst-case of data transmission was calculated: the datalink was required by 120 kbps, the safety network by 5 Mbps, and the non-safety network by 60 Mbps. the architecture covered 17 systems out of 22 KSNP's I&C systems. the architecture is implementable wi

Transmission network capacity needs to be regularly reinforced either by building new transmission lines or upgrading existing circuits. Moreover, expansion planning processes always consider deterministic static thermal ratings as the basis of the N-1 security criterion to meet the growing electricity demands. this paper proposes a probabilistic framework to assess the inclusion of a time-dependent transmission capacity model in expansion planning studies, enabled by dynamic line rating (DLR) technology application. this work first exploits the multivariate requirements associated with DLR-based approaches, discussing the use of electrical, mechanical and thermal variables. Next, a probabilistic framework is built to demonstrate the effectiveness of DLR technology by assessing reliability indices through a sequential Monte Carlo simulation. To illustrate the proposed approach, the IEEE-RTS GMLC 2019 and high voltage transmission line data of the Brazilian interconnected system are utilized. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can be used to certify the inclusion of DLR-based technology in the list of possible alternatives to reinforce transmission systems.
