An attractive way to improve the performance of a thin client system is to reduce the redundant presentation data sent across networks. While various optimization efforts have been made along this direction, they focus on reducing the redundancy at drawing order level or pixel level. In this paper, we proposed a novel approach to detect and reduce redundant presentation data at object level. We empirically studied the effect of our approach on the well-known open sourced thin client system VNC. the experiment results show that our approach reduces the network traffic and interactive latency up to 60% with only a little more CPU usage. © 2005 18th ISCA international conference on parallel and distributed computing systems 2005, pdcs 2005. this paper defines a new network called the Extended Butterfly. the extended butterfly of degree n (XBn) has n22n nodes, diameter equal to ⌊3n/2⌋ and a constant node degree of 8. XBn is symmetric and contains n distinct copies of Bn. In this paper, we address several issues of multimedia cache management. We present a distributed caching approach based on multimedia peer contents. Our proposal is designed in the P2P Hybrid Overlay Network (HON=P2P), consisting in clustering peers with similar semantic and feature-based characteristics. In this paper, we propose parallel algorithms for string matching problems on the recently proposed LARPBS model. Two subproblems are investigated. the exact string matching problem that consists in finding the occurrences of a pattern in a reference string and the approximate string matching problem with k-mismatches in which at most k elements can be different between the pattern and the reference string. For both subproblems, we derive two approaches. the first is an on-line solution that requires O(n) bus cycles if the length of the pattern is n and the second is a constant bus cycle number solution. © 2005 18th ISCA international conference on parallel and distributed computing systems 2005, pdcs 2005. A recurrence equation can be solved in parallel by P-scheme, which consists of three phases: the pre-computation, the propagation and the determination. However the speedup is degraded due to the sequentiality of the propagation phase. We propose a new scheduling policy (Fat scheduling) which assigns more computation units to processors in the middle than in the beginning and ending. Experiment results show that the scheduling policy improves the speedup by 30% to 40% when applied to a PC cluster with 8processors and 100Mbps Ethernet. We also discuss the optimal processor assignment for cases where the computational complexities of the pre-computation and the determination are different and confirm the effectiveness in an empirical way. © 2005 18th ISCA international conference on parallel and distributed computing systems 2005, pdcs 2005. Computer systems employing heterogeneous special or limited purpose computation components can achieve higher performance with less power dissipation than those using only general-purpose processors. In order to effectively harness these advantages, an application must be tailored to a specific combination of computational components unless an abstraction layer exists to provide flexibility between different target computers. We present an algorithm for solving the longest common subsequence problem on linear array with reconfigurable pipelined bus system, one of the recently proposed parallel model based on optical buses. Given two strings A=a1a2..anand B=b1b2..bm (m≥n), the traditional technique for solving this problem is based on a recurrence relation and consists in filling a table of size n×m. We present a way of filling a row of the table in constant time. the pipelining and reconfiguration abilities of the LARPBS allow to perform the computation of the longest common subsequence in 3n bus cycles with m+1 processors. Real-time applications with security requirements are increasingly emerging in parallel and distributed systems. However, the complexities and specialities of diverse security mechanisms dissuade users from employing existing security services for their applications. To effectively tackle this problem, in this paper we propose a security middleware (SMW) framework from which security-sensitive real-time applications are enabled to exploit a variety of security services to enhance the trustworthy executions of the applications. A quality of security control manager (QSCM), a centerpiece of the framework, is capable of achieving a flexible trade-off between overheads caused by security services and system performance, especially under high workload conditions where available resources are dynamically changing and insufficient. A security-aware scheduling mechanism, which plays a key role in QSCM, is able to maximize quality of security for real-time applications running on parallel and distributed systems like clusters and Grids. © 2005 18th ISCA international conference on parallel and distributed computing systems 2005, pdcs 2005. the amount of data that is available to users continues to grow. To make use of the large data sets, it is important that users have access to tools that support the interpretation of the data. Data visualization has emerged as a means of aiding users trying to understand large datasets. A screen real estate index for scatterplot-based visualization software is presented. the conceptual framework and the practical aspects of the index structure are discussed. Density biased sampling is incorporated into the index system to achieve sufficient data reduction to allow dynamic operations. To evaluate the index system, it is necessary to examine it in the context of its ability to support user interaction while maintaining an appropriate level of logical performance. With the growing popularity of parallel computation, researchers are looking for various means to reduce the problem solving time by performing the computations in parallel. While benefiting from parallel computation, they do not want to deal with the parallel programming complexities. In this paper, through RScaLAPACK we demonstrate a means that enables the user to carryout parallel computation without dealing with the intricacies of parallel programming. RScaLAPACK is built on top of two Open source software packages: R and ScaLAPACK. the former provides an environment and a language for statistical computing and graphics. the latter is a library of high-performance parallel linear algebra routines using PVM and/or MPI. through RScaLAPACK the user can setup the parallel environment, distribute data and carry out the required parallel computation using a single R function call. While the interface maintains look and feel of the R system, RScaLAPACK allows carrying out analyses with a performance that scales well with both the problem size and the number of processors. RScaLAPACK is made available as an Open Source package and can be found at http://***/parallel-R or on R’s CRAN web site http://***.
