Accurate, continuous resource monitoring and profiling are critical for enabling performance tuning and scheduling optimization. In desktop grid systems that employ sandboxing, these issues are challenging because (1) subjobs inside sandboxes are executed in a virtual computing environment and (2) the state of this virtual environment within the sandboxes is reset to an initial empty state after a subjob completion. DGMonitor is a monitoring tool which builds a global, accurate, and continuous view of real resource utilization for desktop grids with sandboxing. Our monitoring tool measures performance unobtrusively and reliably, uses a simple performance data model, and is easy to use. Our measurements demonstrate that DGMonitor can scale to large desktop grids (up to 12000 PCs) with low monitoring overhead in terms of resource consumption (less than 0.1% per machine). though we originally developed DGMonitor with the Entropia DCGrid platform, our tool is easily portable and integrated into other desktop grid systems. In all of these systems, DGMonitor data can support existing and novel information services, particularly for performance tuning and scheduling. In this paper, the high scalability and monitoring power of DGMonitor are demonstrated with the Entropia DCGrid platform and the BOINC platform respectively.

the performance of unstructured mesh applications presents a number of complexities and subtleties that do not arise for dense structured meshes. From a programming point of view, the handling of unstructured meshes has an increased complexity in order to manage the necessary data structures and interactions between mesh-cells. From a performance point of view, there are added difficulties in understanding both the processing time on a single processor and the scaling characteristics when using large-scale parallel systems. In this work we present a general performance model for the calculation of deterministic S-N transport on unstructured meshes that is also applicable to structured meshes. the model captures the key processing characteristics of the calculation and is parametric using both system performance data (latency, bandwidth, processing rate etc.) and application data (mesh size etc.) as input. A single formulation of the model is used to predict the performance of two quite different implementations of the same calculation. It is validated on two clusters (an HP AlphaServer and an Itanium-2 system) showing high prediction accuracy.

When solving distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems (DCSP), it is desirable that the search exploits asynchronism as much as possible so that the employed agents can perform much of the work in parallel. this allows to utilize the processing power available in a distributed environment. However, in many of todays DCSP algorithms, only a few agents are working at any given time and the others are idling. this is caused by the fact that once an agent is consistent with its neighbors, it becomes idling until it is forced by other agents to choose a different assignment for its local variables. In this paper we propose a method that utilizes the idling time of the agents to increase the efficiency of a distributed backtracking algorithm where agents have complex local problems and share variables among them. An agent computes solutions to its local problem in advance while it is waiting for incoming messages. this means that when an agent finds a solution to the local problem that is consistent with higher order agents, it not only informs lower order agents but continuous to search for further solutions which then are stored in a queue. When the current local solution becomes invalid due to a nogood received from a lower order agent, the agent does not have to search for a new local solution but can retrieve a precomputed one from the queue. this approach increases the amount of work the agents can perform in parallel since higher order agents search ahead for local solutions while lower order agents are trying to expand the current partial solution. Our experiments show that some increase in performance can be gained by queuing local solutions in distributed backtracking. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Although deadlock is not completely avoidable in distributed and parallel programming, we here describe theory and practice of a system that allows us to limit deadlock to situations in which there are true circular data dependences or failure of processes that compute data needed at other processes. this allows us to guarantee absence of deadlock in SPMD computations absent process failure. Our system guarantees optimal ordering of communication statements. In this paper a novel medical image processing system is discussed. the core of the system is developed using a 16-bit fixed-point parallel architecture B-spline signal processing system. the statistical measure of finite word length effect is analytically developed. A modified algorithm for the reduced hardware reprogrammable interpolator has been designed. Finally some suitable modification in the hardware is made to reduce the power consumption.

Modern radio-communications have begun the transition process from analog to digital radio-communications and broadcasting. During this transition process, main changes are required in exciter units of transmitters. the architecture of transmitters themselves is the same for both digital and analog broadcasting, but the exciters used for digital broadcasting have to create analog RF exciting signals for the transmitters from the digital data stream. the most common modulation procedure used in digital broadcasting systems is OFDM with QPSK or some kind of QAM keying of sub carriers. Apart from RF signal generation, the exciters are often responsible for control of the whole system, because control data is often included in the digital stream distributed from the broadcast center to the transmitters

As we move into the system-on-chip era, test cost is becoming a significant portion of the total cost. Similarly, test synthesis, test pattern generation, pattern compression and pattern validation are consuming significant portion of the design cycle time. the volume of test generation and validation is high due to the size of the designs as well as the types of tests that are required to be run - scan test patterns for stuck-at and delay tests, logic and memory BIST patterns, IDDQ tests, burn-in tests, and several miscellaneous tests. Designs cannot be taped out without validated test patterns. At the same time, since design timing closure takes up a significant portion of the project time and the timing information is not available until late in the schedule, there is immense pressure on the DFT team to generate and validate patterns in a small time frame. this paper describes a framework for design-for-test which exploits both hierarchy and the inherent parallelism in the DFT jobs to run the jobs in a distributed computing environment so as to minimize the runtime impact.

Our results are based on measurements carried out in a residential house in suburban area of Zagreb town, as well as in a medium-size office building (seven stories, approx. 150 offices) in the Zagreb city center, during two moths (late August, September and early October 2003). the noise samples were collected in five whole-day (6 am–10 pm) campaigns. those five days were equally distributed over the two-month period. Noise was measured with the spectrum analyzer, built in the instrument Anritsu Site Master S114B, between the neutral (N) and protection (PEN) wire, so that virtually no 50 Hz voltage was present on the analyzer port. Anyways, we have provided a simple overvoltage protection for the instrument, in case a temporary network fault occurs. We have studied noise on N-PEN pair because there is a technically well grounded tendency that this wire-pair, and not the neutral-phase or phase-phase, should be utilized for PLC systems, [1]. Beside noise measurements, we also carried out simultaneous measurements of the actual office building electrical load, by periodically reading its meter. this was needed for the investigation of correlation properties between the electrical load and total noise power in the 10 to 30 MHz band. In all measurements we have recorded both noise samples from one analyzer scan (lasting about 5 seconds), thus obtaining "temporary" shots, and 5 minutes maximal values, using max-hold function of the instrument. We found 5 minutes maximums interesting because of rapid temporal fluctuations in noise power levels. Resolution bandwidth of the analyzer was 10 kHz. On all figures in this article we use noise power levels in dBm recorded by the instrument with that resolution.

Summary form only given. this article gives a brief overview of theoretical advances, computing trends, applications and future perspectives in parallel genetic algorithms. It explains basic terms and behavior of (parallel) genetic algorithms. Genetic algorithms are easily parallelized algorithms, therefore two kinds of possible parallelism, data parallelism and control parallelism, are mentioned and described towards them. parallelism of genetic algorithms brings many advantages and gains. Classifications of these algorithms are often based on the type of computing model, a walk strategy and the used computing machinery. Afterwards significant milestones in the theory with latest advances are briefly mentioned. then current trends in parallel computing with stress computer architectures of parallel systems, interconnection topologies, operating systems, parallel (genetic) libraries and programming paradigms are reviewed shortly. the sufficient space is devoted to the latest applications of parallel genetic algorithms. After the discussion section, perspectives of the algorithms are predicted till the year 2005. the information in the article is segregated into two periods before and after the year 2000 in all chapters. the second period is more interesting and of higher importance, because it highlights recent research efforts and gives some hints about possible future trends. that is why we devote much space to the second period. As there is no such an overview of the recent period of parallel genetic algorithms, our investigation could be appealing and useful in many aspects.
