parallel transactions in distributed DBs incur high overhead for concurrency control and aborts. We propose an alternative approach by pre-serializing possibly conflicting transactions, and parallelizing non-conflicting update transactions to different replicas. Our system provides strong transactional guarantees. In effect, Gargamel partitions the database dynamically according to the update workload. Each database replica runs sequentially, at full bandwidth;mutual synchronisation between replicas remains minimal. Our simulations show that Gargamel improves both response time and load by an order of magnitude when contention is high (highly loaded system with bounded resources), and that otherwise slow-down is negligible.

Molecular docking is a widely used tool in Computer-aided Drug Design and Discovery. Due to the complexity of simulating the chemical events when two molecules interact, highly accelerated molecular docking programs are of great interest and importance for practical use. In this paper, we present a GPU accelerated docking program implemented with CUDA. the hardware-enabled texture interpolation is employed for fast energy evaluation. Two types of parallel genetic algorithms are mapped to the CUDA computing architecture and used for the search of optimal docking result. Comparing to the CPU implementation, the GPU accelerated docking program achieved significant speedup while producing comparable results to the CPU version. the source code is made public at http://***/p/cudock/.

Resources in the computational Grid nowadays are usually owned by multiple administrative domains which are connected by WANs. Grid resources have their own local management policies and a Grid scheduler cannot control resources beyond the domain of itself. Scheduling algorithms designed for traditional systems do not consider these new characteristics in Grids. In this paper, a two-phase scheduling approach for DAG-based applications in the Grid is proposed. In the first phase, the task graph is partitioned according to the status of selected available resource clusters by an algorithm called GPRC. In the second phase, an algorithm called HEFT is used to map task nodes to processing nodes inside a resource cluster. GPRC does not require detailed status information or control privilege on every Grid resource so that the dependence on Grid information services is reduced and, at the same time, the higher priority of local resource management policies is respected. Analysis and experiment show the effectiveness and adaptation of this new approach in the Grid scenario.

In this paper, we put forward an integrated solution to provide service quality features in an MPLS network, called Integrated, QoS-based Traffic Engineering with Service Restoration (INTESER). INTESER employs a distributed multipath forwarding paradigm in an MPLS domain to enable optimal, QoS-aware traffic engineering and service restoration through static call admission control, and dynamic load balancing and rate adaptation at the domain edge. the core nodes can be QoS agnostic and use a single FIFO queue at each output port. Preliminary simulation results demonstrate the promising prospective of the proposed solution as a simpler and more scalable alternative to the existing solutions.

this paper presents a GPU-based spherical coordinate conversion system for panorama video image stitching. Modern programmable GPU makes it possible to process multiple images in an interactive frame rates. To perform image stitching to form a panorama view, we use OpenCL to stitch multiple images and then texture map it to a spherical object. this allows us to compose an immersive environment. In the case study presented in this paper, we achieve a speedup factor of 76x.

In this paper we present a hardware architecture for string matching. Our solution based on parallelized hashing is capable of handling wire line speeds with zero false-positive probability. String matching modules are extensively used in the network security domain especially in network intrusion detection systems where they are required to operate at wire line speeds. We analyze the performance of our architecture and show the expected throughput for various configurations of the system. We also report the details of our implementation in an Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and compare the performance of this system to an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) implementation. Our analysis shows that our system is capable of matching 16000 strings at line speeds of 45Gbps (i.e. 36 OC - 12 links).

this paper presents FastPara, a C++ programming framework and associated runtime support for writing and running data-parallel applications in computer cluster environments. With FastPara, the user writes a declaration of the data to be exchanged between processes for a certain data-parallel processing algorithm. FastPara will handle all the process communications without any users' efforts. Complex data structures and variable-length arrays are well supported so that users can easily apply this framework to their data-parallel applications. FastPara's runtime provides built-in support for process management and fault tolerance for the parallel processing. FastPara can greatly simplify the development cycle. Based on the performance tests we did, FastPara demonstrated good communication efficiency and little process coordination overhead. We believe that FastPara is a very useful framework in developing data-parallel applications.

the concept of Data Value Chain (DVC) involves the chain of activities to collect, manage, share, integrate, harmonize and analyze data for scientific or enterprise insight. For some applications, it also entails the leverage of visualization and simulation. However, the curse of big data (volume, velocity, variety) makes it difficult to efficiently handle and understand the data in near real-time. To address these challenges, this paper proposed the Data Value Chain as a Service (DVCaaS) framework, a data-oriented approach for data handling, data security and analytics in the cloud environment.

Overlay multicast protocol constructs a virtual mesh spanning all member nodes of a multicast group and employs standard unicast routing to fulfill multicast functionality on application layer. the advantages of this approach are simplicity and flexibility. However, efficiency and stability are the issues that must be addressed as the size of the multicast group grows in the mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). In this paper, we propose an effective structure for overlay multicast to solve these problems in MANETs. Instead of using a spanning tree on the virtual mesh, we adopt a simple structure called MCore for multicast. An MCore is a path that minimizes the sum of the distances of all vertices to the path plus the length of the path. the MCore is more stable and easier to maintain than the spanning tree in MANETs. the simulation results show that our approach handles the flexibility and mobility issues in overlay multicast protocols effectively for large multicast group size.

the number of location-based services is growing and developing. Usually, these services put a huge amount of effort into geometry data computation. thus, their workload is generally high. By exploring cloud computing techniques, one could utilize a number of computing nodes to distribute the workload of the systems. However, the workload is usually not equally balanced across computing nodes, if data is not well-distributed. To make the best use of computing nodes, we propose a sophisticated data distribution technology for geometry computation processing. Intuitively, one can simply divide geometry data into tiles so that the geometry data in each tile can be stored on one computing node. Unfortunately, since data in a tile shares spatial-proximity, processing a geometry computation on spatial-proximity data still incurs a huge workload. To address this issue, we propose a new data distribution approach, Reversed K-means, to distribute geometry data that shares spatial-proximity across different computing nodes. In this way, we can use more computing nodes to process geometry computation and get better performance. To evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithm, we evaluate the utility of computing nodes and the response time when performing geometry computations. the experimental results show that the utility of the computing nodes is higher than existing methods, and the response time is the fastest of all methods.
